The Gamecube gets a bad rep (and how it's better than the Wii)

whenever you mention the nintendo gamecube, you usually end up with someone saying how bad it was. But I thought it was a great system if you ask me. While I understand that it seemed a bit foolish of them to not feature certain games that were also on Xbox and PS2 because the Cube pretty much had the same graphics capacity as the other consoles, It still had it's fair share of good exclusives to keep it going.

Which leads me to another thing. I find it annoying that it's so accepted to bash the Gambecube, but when someone says the Wii sucks, they are automaticly labeled a fanboy of sony/microsoft or graphics whore, or something stupid like that. Maybe that's just because we are in this console generation right now, but when the next batch comes along, will the Wii eventually be ridiculed like the gamecube was? I hope so. I like to think of people's lack of bashing of the Wii like a person that's metally challenged. You cant make fun of them cause it would be cruel and wrong and no need to point out their obvious flaws. Much like how people treat the Wii and why no complaints against are ever heard of. (not directly saying you should make fun of handicapped people BTW, just comparing how people treat the Wii)

And it's sad to see the Gamecube still get bashed when it was not too different from the other consoles at the time, and it was simply a traditional Nintendo console that featured alot of things old nintendo fans like... big use of classic franchises and normal controllers. Maybe I'm just not into the gimicks of Wii/Wii U. And I know it's what makes Nintendo all their dough, but should you really support something that you know deep down inside, isn't what you like?

I dont know, just a small rant. Any fans of nintendo out there you are welcome to respond. I want to hear your thoughts.

The Gamecube was a great console, a very underrated gem.
The only thing I can complain about is the C-stick and how the disks were so little.
Other than that, I loved it.
I played THPS4 on that thing for months and months.
The graphics were just like the PS2's and Xbox's.

I spent a long time avidly supporting Nintendo.

This is because I had a NES and loved it. When the Genesis came out, I grabbed one because Nintendo of America was still denying the Super Famicom was going to be released in America and they were pawning the Gameboy instead. Since I was impatient, I got a Genesis. I always regretted it because when the SNES came out, I thought it was a million times better, but at the time I could only afford one console. So I swore I would support Nintendo from then on.

I got an N64. I loved the N64. But as the years wore on, I realized the N64 wasn't the full solution to my video game needs, so I ended up also getting a PSX, but not until a couple of years after it had been out. I liked both systems, but I really enjoyed the N64 more.

Then I got a Gamecube. I really supported the Gamecube from the get go, but I thought it was a horrible system. It had very few games, a weird controller, and the design of the machine was laughable. Nintendo clearly had not learned its lesson, and there were no great third party games. Even key franchises had weak showings as I thought Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Zelda Wind Waker were all the weakest games in their respective series. I got a PS2 and LOVED that machine. I hardly ever played my Gamecube again after that. Even with the backwardly compatible Wii, the only GCN games I ever put in are FZero and Extreme G 3.

I still hadn't learned my lesson, and I supported the Wii. It was promising when it first came out as I totally loved Excitetruck. Super Mario Galaxy was great, and there were a handful of really fun titles. Soon, though, it became apparent that Nintendo was going after a casual audience. Even though there are some great games, it's just so hard to find the good ones among all the clutter. Since getting an Xbox 360, I hardly ever touch the Wii. I'm not even sure why I still have it hooked up.

I'm not sure which console I like least. I think GCN had pathetic games, but at least it kept up with the competition in terms of horsepower. The Wii has some genuinely fun games, but I think the controls are gimmicky. I still think Super Mario Galaxy would be a more fun game if it just used a regular controller. I just think the Wiimote is dumb. It should be an optional peripheral you can buy for some games, not the main controller that comes with the machine.

I remember when I used to look to the next generation with hopeful eyes. Now I look toward it with dread. I really don't want any new machines. Xbox 360 is fine with me, and I just can't imagine a huge graphical leap. I don't want to shell out more money for a new machine, lose all my arcade games, and have to start all over again. I just don't think it will be worth it. What are they going to push? More polygons? Better textures? Meh, I think the current capabilities are fine for my needs.

I have absolutely zero interest in WiiU or whatever it is called. Even though I think Nintendo makes great games, I am ready to abandon them again after a couple of generations of mostly disappointment. I'll miss Mario, but I'm too busy to get into Zelda games and all the new franchises are generally things that don't interest me like Pikmin and cutesy crap like that. EAD doesn't even make Metroid anymore and there hasn't been a good Star Fox game since the N64.

Y'know, I've never once heard anyone say anything bad about the gamecube. But that's probably because most of my friends opted for it instead of a ps2 or xbox. I also think it's a great system. It had a really good selection of games(NAMELY REmake. That was the selling point for me.), and most importantly kept up with the other 2 systems. Despite the Wii's sales, I still don't see it as a viable "next-generation" console choice.

When it comes to Nintendo, I have always been a fan, but , let's face it, Nintendo gets crapped on in general because it is so childish....you get the odd 'adult' game, but, really, Nintendo is just rainbows and furry animals. People want violence and Sony and Microsoft provide that in their games.

Old school Nintendo was not totally adult oriented but there was something about them (NES and SNES) that kinda made them less childish than the later Nintendo consoles/handhelds.

I have almost everything, new and old, and I love them all. They each have good and bad things about them but the Nintendo franchise will always be the 'kiddie system' compared to what most people are looking for that PS and X-Box provide.

I think it had to do with the level of difficulty in some of the games. A lot of kids weren't willing to spend so much time mastering a certain game. And that's why imo video games were seen as a nerdy thing for so long.

I loved the gamecube, it was all me and my friends played for YEARS, even after the 360 and PS3 came out. Then I got a wii and was super excited. Stopped playing it after 3 weeks. Still use it for netflix and Super Mario 64, but other than that, useless piece of crap.

Windwaker
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes
Geist
Mario Sunshine
The list goes on.

I am currently playing my gamecube more than my 360 and PS3 right now. (Metroid Prime 1+2 forever)

My favorite system is the Ps2.

Then the Xbox 360.

Then the Gamecube.

The Gamecube is a great system. I had (out of what I can remember):

Smash Bros Melee (of course)
Resident Evil 4
Smashing Drive
Soul Calibur 2
Mario Kart Double Dash
Timesplitters 2 (My favorite FPS game for multiplayer)

there are plenty of difficuly games nowdays so i dont think its that. i think jade means that the games were aimed at younger players all together. there wasnt stuff like manhunt, the suffering, or gta in the nes or snes days. it was about stuff like mario and megaman and so on.

anyway i liked gamecube. it was a good system. it had wind waker and re4. probably the 2 best gamecube games. it also had all the other re games including re0. this system was a must buy for me. but wii, aaahhh! i got a wii on day 1 and i rarely ever touch it. its literally junk to me.

if nintendo makes a new system with a normal controller i will throw out my xbox and play zelda 24/7

You know you can use a Gamecube controller on the Wii, right? Plus the Classic Controller. Not to mention a lot of Wii games support using the Wii-mote sideways which gives it two buttons and a directional pad. I think I remember that configuration from somewhere else...

BTW, the Gamecube was awesome. The problem was that third party developers didn't support very well since they were punishing Nintendo for sticking with (more expensive) cartridges for the N64 then using mini discs when finally making the jump to optical media.

The funny thing about Nintendo systems is that I hear the same complaints that I hear from people who liked pro wrestling when they were kids but don't anymore. "It's too kid oriented, boo hoo". Guess what? Nintendo was always that way. If you want M rated hardcore bloodfests, their systems are probably not for you. They've never targeted that market. Sega was offering more "mature" games back in the 16 bit era, while NES/SNES games would be edited to tone down blood and guts. Expecting them to suddenly go balls out with violence now is to expect them to do a complete 180 on what made them who they are.

Funny thing though, despite being so underpowered, kid friendly, and OMG CASUAL~! they just keep cranking out classic games. Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Smash Bros Melee, Super Mario Galaxy 1&2, Twilight Princess, Smash Bros Brawl, New Super Mario, etc.

People keep bashing Nintendo and they just keep cranking out awesome games. It's like they're Haters Gonna Hate: The Gaming Company.

same here man, that goes for any one of their classic franchises. There are some great games on Wii, but the motion contols are a turn off and no matter how hard I've tried I have never liked them and they keep me from fully enjoying the games. Nintendo can keep motion controlls for people who actually think its "Revolutionary", but in my opinion every game needed to be Gamecube controller compatable for people who dont like waggle controlls, like myself.

and for the record, I got Twilight Princess for Gamecube instead because it didnt use motion controlls

No. Brawl is the only game that lets you use the gamecube controller. Pretty much every game forces you to use Waggle. And only a very select few use the classic controller. But there are still a few games that use sideways wii controlls like Punch-out Wii, and those games are fine. All I'm saying is, I love Nintendo, but they gotta start showing some attention to the fans who dont like the gimicks and just want to play a good old fashioned nintendo game. Which means making every game gamecube controller compatible.

Actually, Nintendo has been notorious for trying to dominate their market with their own games and shun many third party developers. The Genesis' more open market for third party support is the PRIMARY reason the Genesis was even successful, there was a much larger variety of games on that console. Many of the successful third party developers on the SNES had exclusive contracts with Nintendo (Square comes to mind), making those titles not far off from a first party game in many respects.

The Wii was a f'n joke imo, GG re-boxed gamecube with a new controller. It came out after the PS3 and wasn't in HD?

As for the Gamecube; My sis gave me one they had laying around in her closet not too long ago and I have been picking up games for it for dirt cheap since I missed out on that console in favor of the PS2, I gotta say I am really enjoying many of the games on it so far (Metroid Prime, Zelda, and Rogue Squadron)

The SNES still stands out as my favorite Nintendo console due to the shear amount of RPGs it had.

The Gamecube was good but for me it lacked interesting games. It had REmake, RE4 and RE2 and RE3. Thats about it. I picked the The Twin Snakes and hated it (still do) and that was pretty much it for me. Nothing else really interested me. I'm not interested in Metroid or Mario like I was when I was younger. As Jade said, PS and Xbox provide the violence for me, not Nintendo.

Nintendo is my childhood, I like to go back in time once in a while mainly to look back at good old memories but it's not nearly as fun as it used to be, simply because I got older.
I never hated on the Gamecube, I liked it as much as the 64 and way better than the wii.

Nemesis, I totally love your sig btw, made me lol :)

Imo, the Wii is one of the best video game consoles to date.
And the reason its so great wasn't anticipated nor wanted by Nintendo.

The Wii was extremely easy to hack.
Bringing about a community of homebrew developers & lovers.
Innovative & creative apps, games & features made the Wii soar above the PS3 & 360, at least in my eyes.

But I loved the Gamecube.
Whenever someone talks shit about the Lube Cube, I just put Metroid Prime in their ****ing face

I hear the smaller disks help load times be ALOT quicker. There is a reason RE4 loaded super fast on cube, but was slow as testicles on the PS2. I'm not sure the technology of why load times tended to be quicker. Maybe it wasn't the disk and it was the cube itself. Just going on hear/say.

The only reasons I LOVED my Gamecube was for a specific number of exclusives.

Resident Evil Games(ALOT of them were gamecube exclusive)
Super Smash Brothers Melee(This game to cube was like Halo to Xbox)
Metroid Prime Series
^^^
These were good enough for the purchase by itself in my opinion.

But then again I'm a big resident evil Junky fan, I'm also a metroid nerd, and SSBM was the best competitive game I've ever played. 12 years and it's never been patched and people are STILL finding new stuff. That's just how deep it is.

Oh and I think the Gamecube controller was one of the best designed controllers(For the games it put out)

RE4 - SSBM - Metroid were all perfect for that controller scheme.
I had a Xbox so I played all FPS(when I liked them) on there.
and I had a Ps2 pretty much for Final Fantasy/RE4(Crossover ADA<3)/Okami/Guilty Gear ect ect.

when it comes to the Wii however.

I bought the Wii for Brawl/Metroid series. There isn't a single other exclusive even to this day that makes me wish I used a wii except MAYBE (Umbrella chronicles/ Darkside chronicles for lols with friends)

But brawl was a HUGE dissappointment for me. So much so I only played the game for 9 hours. Then promptly threw it in the microwave. It felt extremely good to watch it fry. Worth it, I felt alot better doing this than returning the game for my money back. I know returning it hurts Brawl sales. But meh.... It was for my own satisfaction. Sakurai took a dump on his hardcore fans for the casual crowd, And it wasn't even necessary.

Melee was easy to pick up/ It was good for casual crowd, and deep for anyone who wanted to step up their game. Why hurt the pro audience? The casuals wouldn't have cared if it was just as deep as melee was.

So now my wii only exists for Metroid. I'm waiting for another good exclusive Nintendo....
Mario was huge dissappointment for me on the Wii as well. When I play the game for 6 hours, and NEVER GET HIT ONCE. The game is way too freaking easy.

Nintendo has long had a reputation for good games and good consoles, despite the elitist attitudes of PC, Microsoft and Playstation elitists.

Didn't the Wii sell more than the 360 and PS3 combined?

Not to go off on a tangent, but I never owned a Wii or a Gamecube, however I did own a SNES and a N64, and it's really hard to say which was the better consoles. At a push, I would say the SNES had more classics, while the N64 had better games. Few people know just how good, Doom 64 is on the N64.

I always wanted to play RE4 on the Gamecube. At the time, it was being praised hugely and being touted as the nicest looking game on any console at the time.
