Jade's Metal Thread

Bad news for not only Sabbath fans, but also the metal community at large.

Black Sabbath guitarist and founder Tony Iommi, who is largely credited for inventing the heavy metal genre (at least in my book, he did), has been diagnosed with cancer.

This is not the first time someone associated with the band has been diagnosed with cancer. In 2002, Sharon Osbourne, daughter of the band's former manager and wife of frontman Ozzy Osbourne, was diagnosed with colon cancer, but has since made a full recovery. In 2009, Ronnie James Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer, but he was not as fortunate as Osbourne; Dio lost his battle on May 16, 2010.

And the timing of this certainly sucks. As of right now, Black Sabbath is recording their first studio album since 1995's Forbidden (unless you count Heaven and Hell's "The Devil You Know" as a Sabbath studio album, since Heaven and Hell's line-up was literally the same Sabbath line-up that recorded The Mob Rules and Dehumanizer). The album in production is the first with their original line-up since 1978's Never Say Die.

Tony Iommis cancer is the worst news for the metal world, ever. I really hope he makes it through. I had hope for Dio to. Sad he didnt make it. Cancer is the worst thing, i've had family suffer from this its not good. I hope they can find a cure for all forms of the illness in the future, its needlessly ended far too manny lives. Best wishes go to Tony Iommi and his family. Send out "good vibes" people

If you ask me, I have reason to believe that Iommi will win his battle with cancer. What Iommi was diagnosed with is early stages of lymphoma. I'm no doctor, so I don't know the specifics of what lymphoma is, but I'm happy that doctors caught this early, and that alone increases Iommi's chances of survival. Plus, Iommi's ongoing treatment is not expected to impede the recording of their next album.

That being said, however, I also have reason to fear the worst. Ronnie's death 2 years ago is still a relatively fresh wound in the hearts of metal fans around the world, and news of Iommi being diagnosed only makes Dio's death more painful, even 2 years after the fact. I had reason to believe Dio would beat cancer as well, unfortunately, it was not to be. :(

Nonetheless, I speak for the entire metal community when I say we've all got Tony's back in his battle with cancer. Losing him will be just as devastating to us as the deaths of Elvis and John Lennon were to millions of rock fans.

Best wishes to Tony Iommi.

Don't know if anyone here as heard, but Meshuggah is coming out with a new album ("Koloss") on March 27th. I hope this one destroys Obzen in every way. Just from the album cover and tracklist, this looks very promising. Also, I hope for a soon-to-follow US tour, for I still have yet to see this band live. Absolutely must see them!

Not a huge metal-head myself. There are a few exceptions (Planes Mistaken for Stars, Glass and Ashes, Worn in Red are notable exceptions), but some of my best friends are metal-heads. The biggest problem I have with the genre is the amount of racism associated with it. No problem with the guys I know being proud of their Nordic heritage, but I don't like their white supremacist mentality. Somehow the genre has got to shake this moniker.

I love hardcore punk and thrash (Aneurysm Rats, Dead Kennedys, Gama Bomb, etc) which is kind of metal for scrawny guys like me that get destroyed in real mosh pits.

Best wishes to Tony Iommi.

F*CK YES!

I love Meshuggah.

I never really got into Sabbath, but I still remember when Dio passed away. Rising is still one of my all time favourite music albums.

On another note, can anyone point me towards some good progressive metal bands? I'm a huge Dream Theater fan, and there are a number if other prog metal bands I really like as well, but Goddammit I want more!

Also, has anyone here heard of the band Cormorant?

Well, I've stumbled across some Sabbath-related news as it pertains to their tour plans.

Turns out that due to Tony Iommi's on-going treatment and the uncertainty of the band's drummer situation, Sabbath's only European show this year will be at the annual Download Festival in the UK. In an effort to appease both concert promoters and fans, Ozzy will instead be filling Sabbath's other European tour committments for 2012 billed as "Ozzy & Friends" (which will include guest appearances from both Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler and longtime Ozzy bandmate Zakk Wylde, who originally quit Ozzy's band a few years ago to fully commit to Black Label Society), so in effect, Iommi's absence basically makes this a de-facto Ozzy solo tour, with the exception of the aforementioned Download Festival show.

I hope that this latest development is NOT a sign that Iommi is a repeat of what happened to Ronnie, but I know it looks similar. Two years ago, Heaven and Hell cancelled their entire schedule (which included opening for the Big 4 at at least one of the Sonisphere 2010 dates) about a week or two before Ronnie's death (and even then, they knew Ronnie's health was regressing, despite the months of treatment; Iommi even said so on his website when the cancellations were announced).

i dont know wether to put this here or that what grinds your gears thread. but its about metal.

i cant stand people who say theyre into metal and all they like is "dark stuff". lol lots of it isnt even metal.

I think people give new Tristania too much hate. I actually really liked their last album and thought Mary's vocals were fine. Rubicon is my second favorite Tristania album after Widows Weeds.

It has come to my attention that a new Motorhead box set, titled "Complete Early Years Box Set" is coming out soon. However, Lemmy is currently advising fans not to even think about buying it. The fact of the matter is, the rights to Motorhead's early recordings are owned by a Universal-associated record label they have not been under contract with for years, and apparently, Lemmy is crying foul over the price tag, and to be honest, I don't know if Lemmy even receives a damn dime off of these early recordings. According to radio DJ and That Metal Show host Eddie Trunk, this same label has been re-releasing remastered versions of these same recordings without Lemmy's endorsement or involvement, so this to me is nothing more than a cash grab.

Why Lemmy signed away the rights to those early recordings is beyond me.

Now that you bring up that Beatles boxset, did you ever see that Lemmy documentary? At the beginning of the film, Lemmy's in a record store trying to find the Mono version of that Beatles boxset (which probably shows his age).

Despite the recent death of one of their guitarists, GWAR will be working on a new studio album.

Sad news for Slayer fans. Armand Crump, who has long served as Kerry King's guitar tech, has passed away. No details are known yet.

It goes without saying that while guitarists are heavily idolized, guitar techs are the TRUE unsung heroes of rock 'n' roll! Without them, the show has the potential to become a disaster with something as simple as a ****ed-up patch cable.

I've been dreading the day this would come for the last few years, but Jim Marshall, founder of the legendary guitar amp company bearing his last name, has passed away. His death comes on the anniversary of the deaths of Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley, and also coincides with the year his company is celebrating its 50th anniversary, so in his honor, I would like to post this image.

Needless to say, Jim Marshall has had a HUGE impact on rock 'n' roll as a whole, and that includes metal, and he will be missed.

And why Jim Marshall is not in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame is beyond me, especially when you consider the fact that both Leo Fender and Les Paul are in (and deservedly so...their guitars were responsible for inventing rock 'n' roll). Then again, I already have legitimate disdain for that particular establishment for inducting ABBA instead of KISS and not putting Van Halen in on their first year of eligibility, among other ********.

(On an unrelated note, another person named "Jim Marshall" belongs in the Hall of Fame in his craft but is not in, that being the former defensive end for the Minnesota Vikings in the 60s and 70s.)
