Sub-Zero Thread - "Feel Death's Cold Embrace!"

Against match ups like that(Noob, Kitana, Sindel etc) forget about clones and iceballs and go straight into offense.

If you find openings to use the clone use it to cut off the screen, but don't hide behind it, keep moving forward.

Be patient and try to get them into the corner. I can't stress this enough. Trap them with the clone and go to work with 2,2. Even if you lose the first round if they're in the corner(or close) you can easily sweep the next 2 rounds.

Also, on trades use EX ice ball. Works wonders.

Thanks for the help, but I think that what you said would probably work against players that are not very good.
I can't corner a good player for 2 rounds...and EX Ice Ball can't work against a spamming knives Kano :(

It seems you are playing against people who know the matchup too well. I don't know what else to recommend aside from going offensive with block dashing and using 2,2.

Do you watch Silent's show? Try asking Brady when it's on.

Newb is so "stupid" he shutsdown like so many options of sub zero no slide, no clone, no jumping , no freeze. Its so "retarded".

UPDATE

Sorry I've been away for so long. The reason is I finally got Xbox Live. Played around 200 matches. Record is around 100/100. Considering I only challenge people with insane records, I'm fairly proud of myself. Anyway, using the experience I obtained playing actual humans, I have updated my guide. The update includes:

1) new anti-air
2) new mix-up strings

Just check the guide in my sig. I hope it is continuing to help the MK community.

Also, why is Fox17 banned? It's not a permanent ban, I hope? He's an integral part of this thread and many others.

Can anyone post a good combo for when you freeze an opponent in the air? or would any combo that starts with a njp do the trick?

Well a few things okay jps I understand it perfectly now. But initially I was confusing jp with nj. Like I was thinking that you could jps with a njp if that makes sense anyway. I see alot of people go jps b+1,2 is this as confirmable as 22? Next I was very intrigued with b+2 reset capability. Can this be done off a mid screen freeze or is it strictly from a close 22 freeze or something is there enough time ?

b21;212slide when the opponent is in a high position.
If the opponent freezed at a little distance from the ground, you have to use b21(miss the first hit);212slide or 212slide if you don't have much time.

1) After fjp you can use both b1,2 and 22.
2) You can use charged b2 everytime the freezed opponent is close enough to you, it doesn't matter what string you used before ice ball, or if he hit the clone.

It seems that for many situations using the B21.... combo you have to whiff the first hit. How do you intentionally do this? Any trick to it?

You just have to stay at about dash distance from your opponent.
Try it in practice mode, so you will be prepared to use it in your online/offline matches ;).

Sub-Zero help???

SZ has been my go to character for years and years because of his easy flowing combos and his speed.
But....he is very very slow in the new game and i've switched to Scorpion because of guranteed Xray hits using the spear and his sure speed.
Im not a pro and I dont want to practice for hours just to use a character.
Any quick tips for using my old pal?

Re: Sub-Zero help???

You can use his ice clones to control where the opponent moves, and that is the key to SZ. Learn to control the spacing

Re: Sub-Zero help???

I actually just picked up Sub-Zero and found out how fast he can be if you use him that way. He is Designed to be a zoner and set up traps ala ice clone, and hide behind his wall then take advantage of the opposition. His x-ray is guaranteed if he is frozen, so I really don't see the issue, plus it is easy to combo into. 212DF2j.21exBF4 is a great combo. Plus you can charge B2 and becomes an unblockable freeze attack.

Re: Sub-Zero help???

Sub Zero is all about controlling the playing field, using ice clones to block the player off and slowly advance him into the corner. Once you have them in the corner, you can easily keep them there (block off any wake up attack by putting out a clone) and do high damage combo's with him. Another thing to realise is that after the first hit the 2,2 string has a very long range for a melee attack, it's a good anti-air and basically just a good all-around "get off me" attack. Also, as long as you are not full screen away you should always be happy to trade projectiles. They may get a hit in, but you can get in a combo with your ice ball. Lastly, don't get predictable with the slides. They're very easy to punish on block.

Sub Zero definately has alot more potential than Scorpion, although Scorpion is much easier to get into.

Re: Sub-Zero help???

Thanks for the advice, that might have been my issue from the start. I enjoy being very aggressive with Scorpion, so setting up traps and waiting for them to move is against my style. Thanks again!

your thinking about it wrong. Think of it as setting up a defensive wall while you attack from inside but slightly behind. It neutralizes their defense while you have 2 more ways to freeze them. Also the 2,2,2 string can still reach them from just behind the clone. One of my favorite combos with him is if the opponent is blocking: 2,2,4 ice clone its the perfect spacer while you establish defense.

if the opponent is frozen high in the air use njp,dash,b1,2,2,1,2,slide

if the opponent is mid height i just use the 2,1,4,slide because if you freeze more then two dashes away you can drop the (whiff)b1,2,2,1,2,slide really easily

but im more of a safer then sorry player myself, im still getting better at setting up tho its a good trick to optimize dmg
