SPOILER ALERT:Mortal Kombat X DIGITAL COMIC DISCUSSION

Time for a summary of Chapter 30!

Spoiler:
After the preview, Havik puts his boot on the remaining Shokan scout's head and concludes that Queen Sheeva sent them to spy on him. Ripping off the scout's arm, Havik decides that she'll get their report. Back aboard the Shokan ship, Sheeva chews out Kintaro for sending scouts to Shang Tsung's island without her knowledge. Kintaro argues that she needs information if she wishes to make informed decisions before fighting, but Sheeva rebuts that she needs her generals to be loyal if she wishes to keep her crown. Sheeva contemplates executing Kintaro then and there, but can't afford to because of all the casualties they suffered at Z'Unkahrah. Just then, one of the other Shokan shouts that the scout boat is returning... with the scouts' remains put up on display aboard it. The lookout then begins to report that there's "one ugly bastard" on the beach with a sparkly necklace that's getting brighter and brighter. Sheeva quickly shouts at the crew to brace for impact, as an energy blast then strikes the ship!

From the beach, Havik watches as the explosives that were ignited by the blast blow the entire ship to smithereens. Among the wreckage, Kintaro struggles to stay afloat, shouting that he can't swim. Sheeva grabs hold of Kintaro, and the grateful general promises that he shall be hers to command; which is good, as Sheeva commands him to fight once they reach the island. Back in the palace, Havik, Raiden, Cassie, and Jacqui are positioned near Kotal Kahn, Mileena, Sonya, and Johnny, respectively, with Kamidogu blades held high. Havik begins talking about how Reiko's egotism made him a slave to the Kreeyan goddess's prophecy (which is also implied to have been completely made up by Havik), as well as a belief that many champions share: that history can be shaped by individuals. Havik finds this laughable, declaring that history cannot be altered by mortals, but by larger forces. And the greatest of these is, of course, chaos. Havik mocks his prisoners for thinking that they could enforce order after defeating Shinnok and the Netherrealm, for order cannot resist chaos. And with that, Havik and his slaves plunge the Kamidogu into their captives!

Kotal, Mileena, Johnny, and Sonya all rise, now slaves of the blood code. And as the possessed Sonya proclaims that "order is death," Havik adds that death is also order, which is why he must enact his ultimate plan: the destruction of the evil known as the Netherrealm. Havik then begins to drain Ermac's souls into Shinnok's amulet, explaining that Raiden's barriers not only blockade the Netherrealm, but also protect it. With Shinnok's amulet charged up on Ermac's souls, however, Havik hopes to punch through those barriers. But just then, a metallic whip suddenly launches out of nowhere and wraps around Havik's wrist, tearing off the hand that he is using to hold the amulet! Takeda has arrived, and now he must face the Fatal Eight! (yes, the end teaser for the next chapter actually calls them that)

Havik's end goal was definitely not what I was expecting.

Well, he's just like The Joker, just more calmer and grotesque. It's one thing about these damn people from the Chaosrealm; you'll never truly what the hell would they exactly or truly need, have or/and want in their crazy minds.

And poor Kintaro......definitely an overgrown four-armed kitty.

It is so rare that we actually see the "evil" characters showing that they care for those who fight side by side with them. Props to Sheeva for saving the wet kitty, Kintaro, from drowning.

And that's the issue I have with Havik. The character is so random with everything, it just comes across as goofy. It is like NRS made him solely so they wouldn't have to explain the actions of a character on the basis that nothing he does makes sense. He's in my top five most hated characters for that.

One thing I do hope for is the reveal that Quan Chi has the real amulet when Havik attempts to kill Quan Chi. This would be the perfect time to explain how Raiden got the fake amulet and how D'Vorah met Quan Chi. The writer could create a pure carbon copy of Quan Chi's ending from MK4.

If they don't take this route (The Reveal and the explanations) that would not only be a huge opportunity missed, but it would also defy the lore of the entire series.

That isn't canon. Kano stole the amulet, replaced it with a fake, and sold the real one to Mileena.

I don't think that's a plot point that would work very well and would just needlessly complicate things, especially with Quan Chi now dead. That stuff's best left in the old timeline.

I wouldn't go so far as to put him in the bottom 5, MK has had a legion of generic goons and Havik at least has a cool and unique aesthetic. And his random "chaotic" acts are dumb, sure, but not a lot more dumb than the transparently Evil motivations of characters like Shinnok (and all of his followers).

But I agree with the sentiment completely. He's Joker-lite, without the genre-defining writing of Alan Moore or Frank Miller to give him purpose, without the brilliant acting of Mark Hamill or Heath Ledger to give him life, without the iconic mannerisms and legacy built up over decades of worthwhile use, and without being the first popular chaotic character in mainstream lore.

The story's on the verge of losing me at this point. Havik is a terrible primary antagonist. He has no interesting relationships with other characters and he's inherently immune to character development of his own, so all we're left with is a half-baked "Chaotic" agenda that reduces the characters I actually want to be watching (Kotal, Mileena, Johnny, Sonya, Raiden, Cassie, Ermac) to zombies... an agenda that we know will fail, because, hey the Netherrealm is still a thing in MKX! So... uh... if there are no personal stakes, and there are no plot stakes, why... exactly... should I care...?

I just glanced back through the last 15 issues, and the only ones I really enjoyed were the Sub-Zero flashback issue, Reptile/D'Vorah/Ferra/Torr flashback issue, and Johnny/Sonya flashback issue. Yep, sounds about right, first we had a ridiculously anti-climactic abrupt ending of the Shokan war plotline, and now everyone's a zombie fighting a battle with no stakes.

C'mon, Shaun, give us back the character drama. Zombies baaaaaaad, characters goooood.

The comic was a lot better when it was giving us backstory on the characters themselves. Scorpion got more development out of the comic than he has in any other form of media in the past 20 years. If it weren't for the comic, we'd probably think that Kotal Kahn was another power hungry douchebag. But we've seen him as a passionate, honorable warrior. Even Shao goddamned Kahn was shown to be merciful at times! But now we're focusing on a plot that has no pay off. Nobody in MKX says "Hey, remember when that guy held us prisoner on an island and made us fight each other?" It's completely irrelevant. The plot shouldn't be this complicated. I know it's supposed to show up what happened between MK9 and MKX, but this is just ridiculous.

I knew Reiko wouldn't survive, and I won't be shocked if Havik dies too. NRS almost certainly gave Kittelsen some characters to play with that they're not planning to reuse (like Hsu Hao and Mavado early on).

Really nice to see Sheeva get some spotlight and dignity as a character. I think she has a lot of potential that's never been explored.

Sheeva is probably going to die too. Goro already said what he was going to do to the disloyal Shokan when he returned.

Well, there was the interview Kittelsen did with Boon about two months back for IGN, where they said that NRS gave him absolutely no guidelines on who to kill. They specifically used Hsu Hao as an example, Boon was as surprised as anyone else to see Hsu Hao's death - which is to say, not very, but still a little... ;)

I imagine he was given a list of people he couldn't kill, though. If they're supposed to be canon.

I think you guys take this way too seriously. Just enjoy it. I personally am loving these comics. It's very nice to see characters like Tasia and Skarlet redesigned like that. This is a great MK story. I couldn't care less if there's no mention in X of this storyline.

Btw has anyone noticed Kung Jin is the only newcomer missing?
