Kotal Kahn is the most popular new character and will be fighting with Cassie for most used newbie. D'vorah will be bottom tear like mileena.

Most used: Scorpion, Sub-zero, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Kung lao, Kotal Kahn, Sonya, Kitana, Cassie, Liu Kang
Used alot: Reptile, Ermac, Jax, Takeda, Erron black.
Average use: Kano, Shinnok, Goro, Kenshi.
Not used much: Mileena, Kung Jin.
Bottom tier: Ferra/Torr, Jaqui, D'vorah, Quan chi.

No hate. I love D'Vorah, but I don't expect her to be very popular with so many fan favorites in the game.What's with all that hate towards D'Vorah?
Slightly, but not really. Scorp and Sub sucked in MK9, but they were top 2 most played online. Tier lists placed Kung Lao high, but also because of his ridiculous moveset. It didn't help Kabal and Cyrax. It can only do so much.
You're kidding yourself. Kotal is far more popular, and I see more Erron Black love than I do for D'Vorah. Don't get me wrong: D'Vorah is awesome and underrated.

It happens all the time. Look at Aquaman in Injustice, he went from being the laughing stock of the justice league to everyone's so called favorite superhero. Of course Sub and Scorp are going to be popular regardless because they are the Ken and Ryu of MK, but I guarantee you if Ferra/Torr is the best in the game, they'll be one of the favorites online.

I can't speak for the current situation, but I saw a lot of Smoke, Noob and Ermac when I played online and they aren't high on the tier lists.
Kabal might have been broken, but his high execution, coupled with poor netcode, makes him an instant turn-off to casual online players. I didn't see him very much at all besides when Michaelangelo was doing his thing.
We'll just have to wait and see.

If he plays like Tsung not many will use him. I only saw a few people use Tsung on MK9 online. I also see him similar to Quan Chi and that's another reason I don't see him getting much attention online.

execution may matter, but I don't think tier has anything to do with who is most/least played, at least it didn't in MK9.
I played Jax from day 1, and back than he was arguably the worse character in the game especially when you take into account how things like AA jabs and counter poking, which a char like Jax depends on didn't really become well understood until months after the game released because of the terrible training mode MK9 had. Yet, I clearly remember seeing him ranked in the top ten or little outside of it which surprised me because of how garbage I/others perceived him to be at the time. Every MU felt like a nightmare to deal with when I was playing Jax in early 2011.
The same shock I had with Jax happened when I saw how low Mileena was back than too. She had such accessible movement, a low hitbox, and chars with d4's like she, and Sonya had back than was like having free defense because no one really understood how to counter them. She seemed like the most brain dead char to me/others, and yet she wasn't being played like it. My point is this, the chars who are popular with the vast majority will be the ones played the most. Well, most of the time imo.

Let's get real now, Scorpion and Sub-Zero will be most used characters and we all know why, specially for Scorpion because he is overpowered character and every spammer will be able to spam with him just smashing those buttons like crazy, that it.
D'Vorah together with Mileena and few other characters is hard to be learned and not good for spamming, that's why those characters are not used that much in MP.

And NRS can completely give up on one or two of a character's variations if they deem them too hard to balance. Only one "needs" to be competitive. If anything, I imagine this would make balancing every character a lot easier.
