Re: Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection Patch Coming Today [UPDATED With Patch Notes]
I for one would like to clarify those who questioned my silence and attacked me because of it. I have a job, I take a lot of time out of my busy day for TRMK stuff like the very busy day on Wednesday including staying up all night answering questions about the patch on Twitter. Thursday came and work on my real job, making iOS apps and games, took priority so I was up til midnight working after which I unwound with some gaming. So I didn't respond and the allegations against me got worse and worse. But I wanted to reply with some deeper looking at the audio before I was branded a liar or corrupt influencer again.
Personally I felt the patch improved the audio, on my sound system it sounded better. For instance you can hear Scorpion when he tosses a spear now in UMK3, even though on the arcade sometimes you always didn't due to another bug. This is still a problem in MAME actually but it was fixed in the patch for us fans.
The intro for MK2 sounded good to me so I put it on the list incorrectly, and never revisited it until today.
Here is a side-by-side of the intro music to MK2, MKAK at top, old PS3 version below. Clearly they are using more normalized audio on the MKAK instead of the overly loud audio from the previous arcade ports (which means the machine's emulation volume was just up too high).
Up close you see the low points on the MK2 audio drops out occasionally causing the gaps in sound that we hear, this looks to me an emulation glitch causing the timing of the audio to be off slightly.
Now I'm not seeing the game studded at these points, it's just the background audio that is off and not mixed properly.
I need to do further digging into what MKAK is doing to understand it more, but it's clear an emulation problem is causing the mix to be wrong or off. Is it the end of the world? No. I personally turned the music up and sound effects level down for an optimal mix for my system I felt, makes the sounds sound right again (like complaints of jumping sounding odd).
The fact of the matter is the patch is better, online play is MUCH better and anyone who says otherwise is stoned or on dial up. I was playing across the world in the videos I posted and there was almost no noticeable lag on my side. Is it perfect? Nope online play is impossible to make perfect with today's technology, but it's a vast improvement.
I would do a better detailed list of patch notes, but NetherRealm is said to be working on that and they have a more accurate list of changes than what I put together here.
