It's sad watching this video, later finding out about the f2p thing and knowing all of his hype will disappear.
During the GameSpot E3 2013 stage event a few of the game developers from Double Helix Games were on stage to discuss their newly announced title Killer Instinct.
In particular a few rather important notes were made, the first thing mentioned was that there was a small misconception with the game being free-to-play. While the game is a launch title for the Xbox One, fans will be able to purchase the full game on it's release. There will also be a demo which comes with Jago as playable character where you can play all of the game's modes including online mutliplayer.
If you decided after playing the demo that you liked the game, you can selectively purchase packages which feature various characters.
Yesterday, during the announcement trailer Double Helix also showed off the character Glacius. It was confirmed that he would be fully playable during EVO 2013.
The last thing that was talked about was the game's 40 training lessons to try and teach players how to learn the game.
Either way the concept of having a fighting game exclusive to Xbox One seems absurd, considering the online aspect of the console etc.KI is NOT free to play....

At 17:16 gameplay of KI starts. They discuss details about KI and it will be playable at Evo along with Glacious being playable. There are options to buy the full game outright like any other traditional game or you can purchase a select few characters if you so desire.

Yea just read the clarification over at TYM:
Double Helix shared a number of details about the game, including the fact that Glacius will be fully playable at EVO at Double Helix's booth -- along with a brand new character which will be announced from the venue. Double Helix is looking suggestions from fans for gameplay, characters, etc. and expressed a willingness to take fans' input into account to make KI the best game it can possibly be.
Also, DHG cleared up the misconception that the game is free to play; the version of the game that launches with Jago only will be considered a demo; but the game will also have a full digital release with all content. Purchasers will be able to buy either the full retail version, or the demo which will allow you to test the game, and then buy additional characters individually as you desire.
DHG also described the training mode, which is said to have around 40 different lessons in order to help people learn the mechanics of the game. In addition, they shared that the final game will have a few contrasting character archetypes, including grapplers and characters with strong zoning tools.
