NRA blames games like Mortal Kombat for school shooting

The NRA just wasted its chance at redemption and used its highly anticipated press conference to shift the blame to video games, and insinuate about a conspiracy to downplay the role of violent media. “There exists in this country, sadly, a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells and stows violence against its own people,” cried NRA Vice President, Wayne LaPierre, in a fear-stoking extended rant against the media. The news media sees a lot of mea culpa press conferences, which are usually a healthy mix of humility, resolve, and a bit of ass-covering justification. The NRA’s brazen deflection on to video games will surely become a case study in what not to do.

Not five short paragraphs into his speech, the NRA laid out its plan to protect children: more guns. Specifically, hire retired security personnel to stand guard at schools. “Now, the National Rifle Association knows there are millions of qualified and active retired police, active, Reserve, and retired military, security professionals, certified firefighters, security professionals…We can immediately make America’s schools safer, relying on the brave men and women in America’s police forces.”

Then, on top of lashing out at the President and calls for gun control, LaPierre ripped into the media, calling out specific video game titles,

And here’s another dirty little truth that the media try their best to conceal. There exists in this country, sadly, a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells and stows violence against its own people. Through vicious, violent video games with names like ‘Bullet Storm,’ ‘Grand Theft Auto,’ ‘Mortal Kombat,’ and ‘Splatterhouse.’”

Wow. I've been reading about this all day and one thing I cannot seem to understand is they think violence begets more violence, yet their answer for safety is to put more weapons in all schools?

Now if I see the major fail here it must either be a major miss communication or its just plane stupidity on the NRA's part

Sadly for this NRA Vice president guy this is America and games like Mortal Kombat or grand theft auto will never get banned, he should take some history classes and review the bill of rights and shut the hell up.

And whatever the problem is, it had nothing to do with video games!!!

But Cabella's can have a fvcking game called "Dangerous Hunts" because thats where they get their guns from. Hell, those games are actually worse because of the toy gun that comes with it.

And oh yeah, it's a game made by A FVCKING OUTDOOR'S STORE

So he's using video games as a means of diverting attention away from guns? Seriously, what an assclown!

Edit:

I don't have a problem with the idea of hiring more armed personnel, but he comes across as a hypocrite. Come on, he's supporting the use of a killing instrument. Just as the ownership of guns come with the responsibility of learning right from wrong, same can be said about video games or any entertainment media.

Yea I heard the NRA guy giving his speech. While he has some strong valid points I thought it was totally stupid for him to throw Mortal Kombat out there like that as "violent video game influence". He sure left out Call of Duty or games that involved firearms/shooters. Now MK has seen this debate before regarding violence but MK is not even a shooter....its about martial arts combat. Sometimes people just speak out of their a**.

School shootings happen because of Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse? Yes, absolutely. Neither of those series even feature guns to a noticeable extent, but he's clearly done his homework and I choose to blindly endorse his hypocritical condemnations.

Seriously though, Splatterhouse? That was one of his go-to games to trash? That shows just how out of the loop this guy is.

I'm sure he's reviewed the Bill of Rights pretty thoroughly-- I mean, well, you know, the parts that he likes.

"Second amendment? **** yeah mother****er! First amendment? Eww, no, prequels are so gayballs."

I'm not the least bit surprised by the speech, though. Gun laws always face heavy scrutiny after tragedies like this, so I would completely expect gun-lovers to dispel blame onto any other oft-maligned scapegoat they can mindlessly bash (that's not to say that I necessarily think gun laws are any more to blame than violent video games, though).

This shit makes no sense.

If games were to blame, why didn't everyone who played the same games do the same thing?

They never have anyone ask that question.

The answer is simply BECAUSE NOT EVERYONE IS A FCKING NUTJOB

Game is innocent, person with a mental problem isn't.

Yet for some strange reason, drug abuse in children has never been linked to Mario! Does anyone see a double standard here? I mean, Mario uses mushrooms to get big...and in the real world, mushrooms are a psychedelic drug...not to mention the fact that the mushrooms in Mario could also be a reference to anabolic steroids. I mean, this is the same logic being used to link violent video games to violent behavior.

I can't agree more with that statement.

I mean he had mental problems and his mother, an avid gun collector who kept high powered guns in her home, isn't at fault? how? Yeah she was killed and no one deserves to die like that, Some of the blame should fall on her for keeping those things around knowing her son had the problems he did.

I also find it really funny that he only mentions one game that has guns, yet he completely ignores two games that are used to help train our military.

Because we all know CoD could never teach someone how to point and shoot a gun, not with it's complex and impossible to learn gameplay. HA!

@TTrash, you bring up a good point. All I can say to further your point is "Alice in Wonderland."

They clearly just Googled gory games and used the first titles to pop up lol that's NRA research for ya.

"Conspiracy to downplay violent media"? "Shadow industry"? Wow, I've seen some pretty desperate straw grasping before, but this clown takes the cake

The NRA gets funds from Gun Manufacturers.

So of course they want the attention pushed away from guns.

Money talks big in this world, follow the money and you'll learn the intent.

Which is why people here are better off flushing their shit down the toilet than giving it to hypocrites like these
