From a friend of mine working at Netherrealm, who obviously is gonna stay nameless, I've got the scoop on this one. The game does indeed exist, but it may not see the light of day. Yes, it was being made, some of the actors even shot some moves, but the resources weren't there for the team to do both games at once. They tried outsourcing the game to another developer, but it was to no avail. Then the boss from Warner Bros decided to get involved and said something to the effect of putting out 2 products too soon would "confuse" the consumer into which to buy. Sooo, he tells me the game is pretty much on indefinate hold, which in the world of video games, could very well mean canceled. Or, if MK9 performs very strongly, they could pick it back up for a release late 2011, or more likely 2012. The team most likely will see some sort of break post-release before finishing DLC, which is pretty common knowledge to be coming, and is already being prepared. Most likely they will not hault the post-release content for the sake of a compilation of nearly 20 year old games. Long story short, do not hold your breath on this release for anytime soon. I know it's my first post here, which could lead to some doubters, but I wouldn't go through all the trouble of creating an account just to make up stories to a select few on the internet. Just trying to help the community of a game I grew up with and love.
