Some people don't give a shit

I would of personally kept on driving because one:

If I'm driving, that means I'm going somewhere I need to be.

If I stop to help the animal I am under legal right to be prosecuted not only for the animal, but for obstruction of traffic laws.

So people are better off just leaving, no matter what they have done to the animal. Better safe than sorry to be honest.

not at the expense of the life of one of God's little creatures

I agree. If the shit hitted the fan, it did it. Being sorry won't change a damn thing.

It depends on the situation.

If there was traffic behind him, it could cause an accident if he stopped, and I assume there was traffic because you mentioned a second vehicle hitting it.

It's sad but people can't always stop in a situation like this without causing a major accident.....

I think the biggest idiots are people who let their pets roam free. If you have a cat that goes outside, OF COURSE it's going to get hit by a car! Or eaten by a dog....or mauled by a racoon....whatever, domestic animals do not belong out in the wild on their own.

My dog is an idiot. If I let her run around outside, she would be dead within an hour. She has no traffic intelligence and would run in front of a car without even thinking it could hurt her. That's why she is always on a leash or in a fenced in area.

I understand that accidents happen and pets get loose. It's scary when it happens and you hope you find them before anything goes wrong. But if you let them run free every day, you're tempting fate and it's only a matter of time before something terrible happens.

Of course, I say this as a suburban dweller near a major city. I hear that in rural areas everybody lets their animals run free and it's pretty much accepted. I can't speak to that, but I still think if you don't protect your animals, it's your fault when something bad happens. You can't really blame drivers, you expect to be able to drive around without some animal running in front of you.

The only animals I have ever killed in my car have been birds. I felt a little guilty, but then I realized....wait a second, these things can fly! If they're dumb enough to get killed by a car, they deserve to die. Unless they had broken wings, in which case, they were going to be dead soon from something else anyway. I'd be really broken up if I killed a dog or a cat.

This reminds me of one day. I was going to school and I spotted a bird with an injured wing. A car was approaching it and I could see the despair of the poor animal. It tried to run as fast as it could, but ultimately was crushed by the car. It's intestines splatted on the street. Man, I really felt sorry for it. Like, REALLY felt. It was indignant and disturbing to watch. :/

i agree with its more the owners' responsibility to keep an eye on their pets. yes sometimes the pets get out and its unavoidable but its a bit much to blame the driver for not stopping to avoid pets running across the road. the guy could have slammed on his breaks but then the car behind him could have rear ended him and could have caused worst injury. I would have kept driving, i would feel bad but i would not be in the mood to deal with the owners throwing a fit when they aren't even watching their own pets.

My dog never gets loose unless it's in the house or in the backyard. Anywhere else, he has to stay on a leash at all times due to his condition.

On the cat issues, I absolutely hate cats but I would never wish death on one. A cat is one of God's creatures and people that just don't give a rat's ass about running over one are just heartless monsters. It's bad enough that I see a slew of animals splattered all over the road near my home.

I think you are an idiot for thinking that people are idiots who let their pets roam. I have had 3 labs, one got hit by a truck and survived. Learned not to go in the road anymore real fast. When we go four wheeling, she will run in front of us. But we like our dogs to be wild and free and they know where their home is. Also had an outdoor cat and when he wanted in he would hit our windows. When he wanted out, he would hit the window to be let out. It is all about training your animals. I really just prefer to have our animals run. You should not call people idiots who raise their animals differently. We have trained our Labradors to stay by the house, and my family at all times. You yell their name and bam they are sitting on your feet.

You're probably one of the people who doesn't believe in spaying and neutering animals either and the reason there are so many unwanted ones in the world.

Letting your animals roam free is completely irresponsible. I feel bad your dog has such an irresponsible owner and had to get hit by a truck. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Nope all our live labs were spayed, even our rat terrier is spayed. And our house cat is declawed. My dogs have a better life than you do as a human.

I would've kept on going, too. I've hit all kinds of animals (not intentionally) because I live in the sticks. Most of the roads here are 45MPH or more, so most animals won't survive a hit at that speed. I did hit a fox that wasn't killed instantly and that kinda pissed me off. I stopped and it was flinching, but there was nothing I could do because it was the middle of the night and I don't mess with injured wild animals.

Yeah, it is sad, but it wouldn't have survived anyhow. Kudos to your dad for trying, tho.

Struck a nerve. Clearly you know you are a horrible pet owner.

You didn't strike nothing. You don't know how much land we own to let our animals lose. You don't we live on top of a hill surrounded by woods and all our other neighbors either have electric fences and our dogs run around and play with each other. My dogs live life to the fullest, doggystyle.

I have rescued cats, saved birds, and my family returned a bald eagle back to the state. But I have also ran over my fair share of rabbits. Sorry. Like cute bunny rabbits, they came from no where.

Dude, that's fine. I'm sorry I overreacted.

If you look at my original post, I did say that I understand people who live in rural areas let their dogs run loose and I can't really speak to that.

If you had pointed that out in the first place, I probably wouldn't have said anything. But when you say that your dog learned not to go in the street by getting hit by a truck, you have to admit, that doesn't sound like the type of training a responsible pet owner would engage in.

I don't know the details, I wasn't there, but it was around 8:30am.

I don't know if it was busy, struck me as strange that the second car and the 3rd car (my Dads) were able to stop.

The point is, everyone has places to get to. Im proud my Dad took the time to at least take the poor animal to the vet even though he had places to be as well, which is more than I can say for the first car that hit it.

Why don't you tell the person who threw the first personal barb to stop the trouble?

Because that post wasn't reported so I didn't see it. Sorry, I have a zillion threads to read through, I don't catch every little thing, which is why we ask for you people to use the report button to help us out. Reporting a post brings us right to that very post so if you had reported it instead of sinking just as low, I would have said something, but I didn't see it.

BOTH of you better grow up and stop, please. Saying this nicely.

~Thanks =)

You called everyone idiots who let their animals loose. That includes rural, suburban, and urban. No matter how hard you train your dog, it still has a mind of your own. Plus it was a wrong time, wrong place situation for my dog. My friends dog got his by a semi and she survived, and does not go anywhere near a road. Our dogs know their name and know when to kennel up. I live in downtown in a city now, I would not let my dogs off their leash. My neighbor had a little toy dog that she never leashed and would just follow her around. But that dog was so obedient, and never stray away from her. Back in South Dakota we had all hunting dogs. I am not going to leash a hunting dog. We would explore the woods together, and if I got attacked by a mountain lion, I wouldn't want my dog on a leash.

He did make an exception in his like 3 or 4th paragraph. So not technically all.
