Reiko, Noob, and Smoke are the only remaining characters who have a shot at being DLC that I would consider purchasing. (Unless NRS goes full Black Dragon and reinvents some other shitty old characters to make them amazing. Always go full Black Dragon.)

Give me Usurper (Shao Kahn grappler), Acolyte (Brotherhood magic), and Weaponsmaster (exactly what it says on the tin) Reiko, some sweet interactions with Kotal Kahn and Mileena, and I'll be a happy camperino.

Well to be fair Ninja non-cyborg Smoke has been in just one game, MK9 (not counting his secret arcade appearance).

It would be unfair to consider Smoke and old Cyber Smoke the same character.

I am OBVIOUSLY biased, but any pack will include a female and I'd argue Sindel is the most popular left apart from Jade (not happening) and Frost (not happening).

I feel like Sareena is more popular than Sindel. That's not to say that I would prefer one over the other, just judging off what I've read on forums.

Imo... There's really not much to think about. Jade is not happening and is passé, if not for all eternity then until MK11 at least. Frost is not happening either. She's on the back of the list (check Ed's tweet), had only a minor cameo and has minimum contribution to MKX's story meaning playable she would be totally out of place - especially with Sub-Zero being the star here. He even froze her and said he'll deal with her later (meaning between MKX and MK11) which reminds of her 3D era plot. The only reason they included Frost was to make her appear so they could use her in the future (MK11) if they wanted to and it would make at least remote sense because they could back it up. So you have left Li Mei, Sareena and Sindel. Out of these 3, Sareena fans are the most vocal. She hasn't been in many games and was ditched several times in favor of someone else. Plus she has ties to the main MKX villains. To be honest, I feel like Sindel in MKX was forced and that Li Mei's redesign is good, but will make more sense in MK11 than here. I think Sareena has the biggest chance of them all. But it's a momentum thing, now or never.

Sareena also has ties to Bi-Han, and maybe some of her intro lines could give us hints (vs MKX Kuai-Liang and MKX Quan Chi) as to the whereabouts of Bi-Han.
 
Yeah, I thought about that too. But didn't bring it up, because Bi-Han isn't in the game and well... not many people are really into that BH/KL SZ/NS thing. Despite that I agree that Sareena's interaction with Sub-Zero, Quan-Chi, Shinnok and Raiden could be some of the most interesting dialogue in MK(X) history.
 
I'd love to have Sareena too -- hell, I'd love an all-female Kombat Pack! -- but it feels bizarre to have her first real outing be one where Bi-Han isn't in the game.

Only among hardcore fans. Most casuals have no idea who she is.

Agreed, but regardless of him not being in the game, I'd like to know his whereabouts, and MKX did nothing to explain his situation, and even in MKX Kuai-Liang in 1 of his intro lines (vs Kung Lao) says that Bi-Han's whereabouts are unknown.

Sure, but Sareena cared for Bi-Han before he became Noob Saibot.
I'm pretty sure that Noob Saibot Bi-Han wouldn't want anything to do with either Sareena or anyone else (as per MK9's fight vs Kuai), since the wraith infused Noob Saibot Bi-Han wouldn't have the same compassion for Sareena that the human Bi-Han Sub-Zero did.

Fun fact: There's an unexplained link between Reiko and Sareena. I remember reading about it back in the day but it was never elaborated upon. There's a reason why they both have markings under their eyes and salt n' pepper colored hair.

The obscure or joke or rumor characters who get attention and get to be real boys and girls tend to be ninjas. Ermac, Skarlet, Rain, Tremor, etc. The ninjas have the hugest casual fanbase. He absolutely did have an advantage -- do you think the demand would have coalesced around him if he wasn't originally a palette-swap ninja? If so, where are the petitions for Tasia and No-Face?

Tremor managed to overcome the fact that the creators hated him, whereas the creators are all on record as liking Sareena and all she's ever gotten is a crappy DS port and the garbage Armageddon.
