Well, sorry, but I'm not going to count Ferra as a character on her own until she becomes a character of her own. As far as I'm concerned, she and Torr counts as 1 character, albeit a duo/dual/tag character.
If anything, we have 2½ female characters then.
As for the sudden jump into sexist comments, that is quite unnecessary. Usually, my favourite character in fighting games turns out to be female. Female characters tend to be beautiful, strong, fast and agile. But I always have a male counterpart as a second favourite as well.
It has nothing to do with the gender though. It's how the character plays, the overall looks and story. If Jade was a man, I would still have "him" as my favourite character. If Reiko was a woman, not only would the name make more sense, but "she" would still be my second fave character.
The first Street Fighter only had male characters. Street Fighter 2 added Chun Li as the ONLY female character. And later in Super Street Fighter 2, Cammy joined the roster as well. Having mostly men and few woman playable in a fighting game is more about the traditional view on fighting games than anything else - that, as mentioned above, men prefer to play as men, because [insert reason here].
- It could be because they want to play someone they can look up to, a strong and more heroic and fierce man than themselves.
- Maybe it's because they feel it is more relatable.
- Perhaps because men are seen as the "stronger" gender who would most likely join a fight, while the majority of women would prefer more diplomatic solutions.
These are all stereotypes though, and they don't fit with everyone. But it is these stereotypes that NRS sees and it is therefore the majority of the roster is male. They aren't wrong though. All stereotypes are spawned from truths (mind you that the stereotypes themselves aren't true, but they stem from what is true). The majority of fighting gamers are male! Most of them prefer to play male characters! And that's just how it is, no matter what the reason behind it is.
All this said though, Mortal Kombat has always had a good handful of female characters in their games. Yes, they are the minority, but there have still been some to choose from, and I am sure we will have more female characters in MKX than those already revealed. However, Mortal Kombat has never had half the roster be female, and those expecting there to be such in MKX are just fooling themselves. It doesn't matter if you find it unfair, it's just not the way it is, and I doubt it will ever be like that, and NOT because NRS are sexist or anything, but because the mere and simple fact is that the majority of fighting gamers are men who prefer to play as men.
We WILL have more female characters though. That's not the issue and there is no need to worry about otherwise.
