Mortal Kombat: 3D vs 2D

I hope I started this thread in the right place, because I didn't see a general MK discussion forum.

Anyway...

I don't understand so much of the hate I'm seeing these days on the 3D format as applied to Mortal Kombat, as opposed to the old 2D games. I know that a lot of us old-schoolers are nostalgic for the old MK games; I include myself in that number. The story was much better back then, and the mechanics were simple enough to pick up while also possessing a learning curve for deep skill. But, correct me if I'm wrong, isn't 3D supposed to be a step UP, or an improvement, over 2D? Did a lot of you just hate the 3D MK games _because_ they were 3D? Was it the way Team MK executed it? Recall MK4: it featured 3D graphics, but was mostly 2D gameplay (with a very awkward method for moving around the arena if you wanted to take advantage of the "3D" element). And yes, for those wondering, I do speak as someone who thoroughly enjoyed Deadly Alliance AND Deception (Armageddon, notsomuch). I didn't find the implementation of 3D graphics or game mechanics off-putting at all.

Part of what sparked my interest in this subject is the way Street Fighter IV implemented its dynamic, and I think we mostly agree that that game looks fricken' awesome. But it seems to me that so much of the talk about wanting to go back to 2D reeks of regressive hate on anything recent. I don't know about the rest of you, but I want to see MK advance, not retreat. So, TRMK board, educate me. Just what is up with the retroactive hatred of 3D MK? If the 3D format itself is not the problem, just what would Team MK have to do to make a game that would not make us look back years later, and basically shit on what most of us once claimed to love?

P.S.: Sorry to be so long-winded. Obviously this is something that I've been thinking about quite a bit.

I agree with this. I really enjoy the 3D games.

Me too but I like what they did with Street Fighter IV. Of course, if they did this with MK9, it would be accused of copying.

Ed Booney and his posse better figure out a way to top Street Fighter 4.

Cause right now, Im enjoying SF more than MK vs DC.

NO BUENO!!!!!!!!

I remember they interviewed him and asked him if he has heard anything negative about the game (MK vs DC)

ED BOONS RESPONSE: "I HAVENT HEARD ANYTHING. EVERYBODY'S HAPPY"

Considering 50% of playing SF and enjoying is being a fan boy even on a minor scale... Its possible to top it, but it will take some time. I've played it now... I didn't enjoy it, its dull to me but I'm not a fanboy (seriously, how can anyone adore the females in this game, their bodies are so big built the muscle on muscle effort makes them look fat and the bodies deformed). The return to 2D felt like a step back (again), SF doesn't work on 3D though the critics aren't happy from what I've read (never are) since 3D "is the way to go". -_-'

Can MK9 top it? No, it won't... But MK10 could possibly, trouble is SF7 will be out then... Lol.

Street Fighter 7? it's taken 22 years for us to get to the 4th one, by that standards, the 7th one will be out in... 2031? If we've only got two MKs between now and then, I'm going to be very annoyed.

MK will always be better than SF as far as I'm concerned. That's my opinion.

It won't be SF7, it'll be called "Super-Street-Fighter-II-Turbo-HD-Remix-Mega-Hyper-Ultra-Special-Edition-Plus."

I haven't played much of the 3D MK's, but the only thing that's bothered me solely about them being in 3D was that MK4 tried to do too much, with technology that wasn't perfected (like horrible cutscenes and really weird camera problems).

The only recent MK game I've played so far is Deception, which I find aggravating, but that's just because the controls are spongy as hell to me.

One thing they could do is work on true live motion capture of actors as opposed to the polygon look. This will bring back the digitized look of the old game and bring it up to date. Running in 1080p at 60fps it could look quite impressive if done correctly.

Yeah, I find the hate for 3D MK to be very ****ing silly. 3D IS a step up in the Franchise.

I tried my hardest to stay away from this thread, I really did.

But I cannot and will not stand for that last comment. And I'm not even motivated enough to explain why, but its the exact opposite. MK stopped being MK when it Ed tried to make MK more like Tekken and Soul Caliber instead of MK. All credibility for the MK went out the door when MK4 came out and was squashed by the released of MKDA.

That is all.

I really don't have any beef with the 3D Kombats. Ok, I'd much rather play the 2D games that I grew up with, but I still enjoy playing the 3D games too. I think that MK:DA is probably the second best game in the entire MK series (second to MKII, of course). I still find myself reverting back to playing that game, and restarting the training missions again. I think that in another few years I'll still appreciate it, in the same way that I still appreciate the 2D games today.

I prefer the 3D MKs to the 2D MKs mainly because the AI in MK I-III was un-****ing-bearable (Arcade AI was designed to drain quarters, leading to unstoppable AI). I know, there are people who can get through MK on one credit on super hard difficulty, but I shouldn't have to exploit the AI just to survive longer than 3 fights (see vid below).

I'm very torn between MKDA and MKD. MKD has it's awesome Konquest mode, chess, TONS of kontent. But MKDA set the stage for a great new MK story (which ultimately went to hell sometime later), had all my favorite save Sektor, and had the largest krypt.

That said, MKII is still the best. After that is the winner of the battle above, then MKSM, then MKM. Why MKM? Because it has the best story that's why. Gameplay sucked I know.

In general I prefer the 3D MKs, not because they are better games, but because I get more lasting enjoyment out of them. The 2D MKs defined my childhood, and for that I will always love them indiscriminately...but I agree completely about the AI.

Oh God don't say that name! XD

At least MK gives itself credit for keeping the titles away from "turbo awesome edition with an 'x' on the end" style of titles. ;-)

Other than ULTIMATE Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat GOLD, Mortal Kombat Deception UNCHAINED and Mortal Kombat TOURNAMENT EDITION, yes.

Okay, so some of those may not be the exactly the same as the SuperTurbos, but MK is definitely not innocent of trying those sorts of titles out.
