MK HD Kollection

Re: Your Opinions

I assume you're responsible for merging this thread, so thanks for that.
I agree that this is not the originals, but it is still my preference to have options, such as:
- an option between new (2011-afied) and original (untouched) audio.
- an option between 'fixed' and original gameplay
- additionally, an option for regular MK1 speed (rev 5?) or Turbo Ninja. Perhaps Turbo as the default to keep speed more consistent across the board.

Such options would be easy to implement IMO, and provide for fans who only desire a visual upgrade; the game can have updated components enabled by default, and whoever doesn't find them appealing can always switch to their original counterparts. A simple settings menu could house these options.

It wasnt that did it, i suggested it be merged :)

Anywho, yea, but thats also why i said i'd like to have both. Because no matter what, re-film, re-do, etc, its not gonna be exactly the same.

I just dont have a lot of faith in the team or Backbone or whomever is doing this project, to do it right and the games coming out playable the way they did back in the 90's. They havent contacted anyone i know of, and those contacts know more about 2d MK than the MK team does. Believe that.

Re: Your Opinions

I follow you in this one Tim.

They shouldn't change that much on these games, even the 3D moddelling can mess this game up. It's like they want to make it a different game. WB Games would've been much cheaper off making a remake with some graphical filters (why the 3D???), some new audio AND a some really good online play (8 player game rooms, online replays, tournament options, etc...). This because they f'ed it up (the online) in the MK2 port on the PS3, it was a darn solid port but the online functions are really bad.

I simply can't understand that games like UMK3, that are rock-solid, would even need this whole make-over thing. This isn't Pac-Man (DX rocks!) or some other old(er) school arcade game. It also isn't a drawn game so they can't HD it like the Street Fighter 2 game... Marketing people should understand that not every game can be HD'd.

Hope they can redress the plate without changing the recipe, but I have my doubts...

Re: Your Opinions

Actually the same just updated with a few adjustments. We all know that the Backgrounds and chracters are going to be re-shot/updated.

- I want the same for audio, same tracks but re-made
- Slight re-balancing like Tim mentioned
- Unlockable characters like UMK3 Ermac, CL Sub, etc playable from the start (or when you have unlocked them, no need to do it again)
- Online: GGPO like netcode, replay mode, quick 1vs1 matches, rooms with selectable amount of players, decent ranking system
- Original Arcade ports available with same online possibilities

Something like this.

Yea I agree. UMk3 is 15 years old, and is still not just the best MK, its one of the best fighters out there, period. We are still bringing it all over the East Coast, Midwest and next weekend, to the West Coast in tourney play. But the fact these games are getting the attention they deserve is awesome. I'd love to see how they could improve MK1 tho. The campiness, the whole cheap kung fu movie feeling it has is awesome. Can they recapture that with todays tech? i dunno. but i'd like to see them try.

ALSO, maybe this will open up the door of the next MK, MK10 to REALLY return to its roots, as a 2d fighter with digitalized characters etc. Until then, MK will never be the same. imo.

Read what you originally wrote (below) and you'll understand my response. Seriously, do you even know what you typed? Get a clue.

this game is gonna be awesome. I'm really looking forward to the story mode, it looks awesome from the little clips we've seen in vignettes. after all of the stuff they have already showed or leaked this is gonna be the biggest selling point for me. the action looks top notch and the king of the hill feature sounds awesome. i just hope I can progress up the damn thing with out finding my score in the negative digits haha. some o them dudes are hard core, I don't know if I should be amazed at their skill, or disgusted by the fact that they never do anything else. can u imagine what their rooms must smell like? can you say " B.O. and Fritos" hahaaa! yeah can't wait.

That is what I find truly exciting.

See, even though MKHD will be made this way, it is still just an upgrade of those original games, and consequently stuck in the time period they were made in. Also, the current tech to make a game with digitized actors can only go so far.

But a new, modern MK, aiming for true live-action graphics...that's what I'm really waiting for. We're years away from this being possible, but once it is then MK will have the chance to really be as it was originally intended.

My imagination is going berserk right now...

actually I DO know what I typed. i typed that I want to see the story mode and that usually the uber nerds hold the highest winning streaks and that they would probably be the one dominating king of the hill. I also made reference to the fact that you don't get that good by having a 9 to 5. and that they must live in unsavory conditions. that about sum it up Heath McDoanald?

This forum and thread are for the Mortal Kombat HD Arcade Kollection. What you typed had absolutely nothing to do what that game. Do you know where you are right now?

It said "opinions" I didn't see MKHDC any palce. don't look a gift horse in the mouth you just had the privilege of not only hearing my opinion but also getting to engage me, The Rai-man in verbal kombat. consider yourself fortunate. you could have been stuck with ricohettmatt. and we all know how dull that would be

C'mon thats just wishful thinking. They are never going back to digitized graphics for the main series.

Amen brother.

Wishful thinking or your wishful opinions?

I do know for a fact its been discussed among the team.

Re: Your Opinions

I really do hope for "MK10" to truely go back to its roots 100% and have digitized graphics and be truely 2D. With todays technology this game would be f*kin SICK!

hells yes, bro!

Personally I don't. Having not seen what MK HD is going to look like, I'm sure it'll look good but it will never look as good or dynamic as what MK9 is looking like. The backgrounds and characters in MK9 are completely dynamic thanks to modern 3D engines coupled with physics engines. This is something you can't do with 2D digitized sprites.

When you work with 3D models and 3D environments you are awarded with the ability to constantly tweak and make changes to the entire environment without spending hours recapturing actors. Hell as I said above, the game dynamically makes changes to the characters while it's running even. You can't get the fluid and precise animation afforded with the use of models and skeletal animations. The use of 3D models also take up far less space than thousands of frame sprites, especially when you are dealing with HD resolutions. It's really hard to explain because it simply is much more cost and size efficient to make a completely 3D modeled game.

The only reason I assume they even did MKHD was because well Street Fighter did it first with Remix. Also because they are simply updating an old game with set animation frames. So they knew exactly what frames they were to re-capture and it becomes an easy shoot to just go out capture the graphics with new tech and be done.

But the new games they have the ability to constantly refine say something like how high Sonya kicks, and they can also go into the motion capture studio themselves and recapture certain animations without needing to call the actor back in for another session coupled with doing makeup and all that mess. It's a much harder process that was done ONLY because 3D graphics was a dream when they made earlier games.

The guys at Galloping Ghost have been working on a very ambitious "modern" 2D digitized fighter with 60 frames of unique animations for years now. The game looks really fluid like we'd want a modern fighter to be, but their biggest problem is that HD sprites take up TONS of space. I was told that their game totals up to 1TB of space almost, and it's not even completed yet. If anyone is to do a game with the techniques that you want, it'll be them. It just may not be out for a while at this rate.

What I want to see MK do is up the ante with the game engine and really just make the characters and environments look more and more real as the engine improves. There are lots of ideas I know I've had for what would make the games look even better, and I'm sure they are thinking along the same lines.

Re: mk hd dead? no hope?

You know what ? I'm watching again those vids of UMK3 for I-phone, and i'm now quite sure that this "HD Kollection" will be in full 3D : i mean, backgrounds (we know now for sure that an brillant freelance 3D graphist had work on it) but also the characters !

Just watch at this vids : all the moves have been remade by motion capture : so why don't they be use for the Playstation 3 version ?

If you add the fact that it will be a PS3 exclusive because of the "3D render", that will be far much more easy to do with 3D characters, than with real models...

Patrick Mc Carron told us a few month ago than actors were hired to work on this game : probably then it was Mokap actors ? What do you think guys ?

When they "film" new actors, they don't mean 'motion capture'. Besides.... isn't that just what MK9 is? The original trilogy of Mortal Kombat games was unique because of the digitized sprites used. To turn those games into MK4-esque graphics would be an insult to their legacy. The only reason they did it for iPhone is because they said it worked better on the device and made it more fluid. I don't believe any motion capture was done for the iPhone game either.

Re: mk hd dead? no hope?

While they COULD do that, they are not. As what we heard about was not mo-kap that was being done, it was full costumes, makeup, etc.
