Let's talk Rain

Personally, while I thought his MK:A design was clever, I felt it was too far removed from the simple palette swap. I mean look what they've done to make the other ninjas unique, and still mostly retain their classic look. Like I already said, a well thought out hybrid works best for me. As for moves, I think he's definitely got what it takes for great gameplay. I feel MK:A kind of poisoned his popularity due to being an overall clunky game, reflecting badly on a character with a lot of potential. I like that he's an elemental ninja as well, and has an interesting backstory that could be improved in this iteration to make for a stronger personality. Back to gameplay, I particularly loved his 'waterball' move that allowed total control of your opponent while they're immobilized in mid air. He was the only character able to do this, and just one of many things that MK9 could make really special. But of course, feel free to disagree.

I hadn't thought much about the inclusion of Rain in the upcoming game but you've actually got me excited about the idea. Story-wise I find his character interesting because he's the only male Edenian kombatant (not counting Taven and Daegon). As an Edenian he would have the same longevity as Kitana but is presumably more powerful, as a descendant of Argus.

As for the gameplay, I was always a fan of his ability to use lightning because I thought it sort of set him up as an equal adversary to Raiden and Nightwolf, both 'good' characters with the same power. Though if he were to be included I'd like to see him use lightning in a different way to them both. That'd be consistent with the whole theme of not recycling animations. Plus I LOVED that waterball move he had that allowed you to control the other player! It'd be hard to animate it nicely in 3D (2.5D, whatever) but it could be awesome...

Oh, also agree about retaining the ninja aspects of his appearance. I don't like that he wears a sort of crown in Armageddon that exposes the top of his head. Needs more ninjaness. :D

Nethervestige, all great points. If he were to possess a lightning attack then it should be completely unique. Any ideas for it? I can also imagine a variation of the waterball move, that would have your opponent constantly writhing instead of being motionless. As for moving them about, I'd prefer to hurl them about in the air, instead of the original movement by small increments.

My idea? Rain can create Electricity through his body, but cannot release it. He therefore uses water to his advantage.

Yeah, he carries a bucket of water around him where-ever he goes.

Well actually, keeping his conductivity limited to his body might work nicely. For example, I notice that Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Johnny Cage all seem to have non-special moves that still incorporate their powers (Scorpion has a flaming uppercut, Sub-Zero has a punch that freezes the opponent mid-air and Cage has a punch using his inexplicable green energy, haha). Rain could have an equivalent that electrocutes the opponent? As for an actual special move – Jade had one that made her temporarily invincible, Nightwolf had one that reflected projectiles – maybe Rain’s body could temporarily surge with electricity and inflict damage on contact?

As for the water ball, hmm that’s tough. For it to make sense I always sort of imagined that the opponent is enveloped in a cocoon of water and Rain can thus control them because he can control water telekinetically. That sort of water effect would be tricky to pull off nicely though... Not that I’m doubting NR Studios’ talents here. Come on guys, I double dare ya.

I personally don't think that Rain should be put in this game as a playable character. He was an after thought in the original creation of the character. If I where to have only one ninja kombatant other than Sub-Zero and Scorpion it would be Smoke because the way it's looks like Kuai Liang is the Sub-Zero in this new installment and smoke is Bi-Han, Right?

So you're against Ermac as well?

Wrong, he's Noob Saibot. And can't see why you'd omit Reptile who's been a staple of the series since MK1 and actually is in MK9...

That's an interesting idea, but still too reminiscent of Raiden for me. On second thoughts, I'd like keep the classic lightning bolt move, because that simple arm gesture he does causing lightning to strike down your opponent conveys a lot of power. The only thing I'd change, actually, is the bolt itself. Even no bolt at all, just replace it with something else entirely. Perhaps a reverse Sub Zero ice spike (w/o the ice), channeling water from above into a knife shape that hits your opponent at tremendous speed (like falling nails); instead of sending them up in the air though, it sends them directly to the ground. That way it will differentiate itself further from Sub Zero and Ermac's moves, and will look more dominating as well. Stop any character dead in their tracks, especially if someone is pumelling you with combos.

Re: Picture of Rain in background!

Hey guys,

This is my first time posting here, and I haven't seen anyone mention this yet. So in this picutre right here you can clearly see rain in the background. I understand this isn't huge knowing that Frost was on the bridge in the pit, but nevertheless thought I would share. :)

There is another post about this somewhere talking about Rain and Meat making the cameo appearance.

Re: Picture of Rain in background!

A nice find. It was in another thread, but I feel this is deserving on its own. +1

Re: Picture of Rain in background!
