Jade's Metal Thread

I'm a big fan of Lacuna Coil.

Is Epica considered metal?

What about Nightwish?

EDIT: apparently I only like metal with female singers LOL

Hell yes Epica is metal (symphonic metal). Nightwish too. I think Lacuna Coil has done a pretty good job lately distancing themselves from anything resembling metal, though.

I love female vocals in metal. Well, at least non-aggressive ones. I don't think most chicks who try to growl do a very good job of it.

Dooooooooooooooo you now :D

Case in point. I can't stand Otep. Although to be fair, growling is probably her strong suit.

What do you think about Maria Brink from "In This Moment"?

In This Moment - The Gun Show:

What about Tokiko Shimamoto from "Shadow"?

This is the only song I like by them:

Although I like it a lot. One night I was depressed as shit and listened to it for more than an hour straight on repeat. The rest of their stuff doesn't do anything for me, though.

I think she sucks, honestly. No offense to anyone who's a fan of her or the band, but like I said, I'm into non-aggressive female vocals. More specifically, I like semi-operatic female vocals, like the style that's prominent in gothic/symphonic metal. Even Maria's singing is mediocre at best to me.

I guess I'm kind of stuck in "gender roles" as far as vocals go. I like grunts and growls with occasional black metal screams, but they have to be done by guys, and I like clean, operatic, ethereal vocals, but they have to be done by women. Any time I hear a dude trying to sing, I just want to turn it off. Any time I hear a chick trying to growl, I just want to turn it off.

Haven't heard new lacuna coil stuff. Reason I wasn't sure of epic was metal is because the yelling Is so short lived lol. And it feels more like I'm listening to a play back in mozarts days

Consider yourself lucky; new LC is just uninspired and generic. Shallow Life almost sounds like Linkin Park without the rapping. It's depressing to see how far they've fallen.

Regarding what you said about Epica, you don't need constant aggressive vocals to be metal (see power metal, for instance). Classical music and metal actually have quite a few things in common too.

LC has really gone downhill and it sucks that they are going with Don Gilmore again. :/

Cant believe this actually happened:

I don't really like "In This Moment" either. I was just curious was you thought about the singer.

"Shadow", and the other hand, I really really like.
