I fear an AO Rating

I love the new fatality's in Mortal Kombat. There bloody and brutal, what's not to love but I fear that with it's goriness it might end up with an Adult's Only Rating and that would kill the current version of the game. I read part of an interview last night where Ed Boon states that they have had to pull back on some of the ideas that they have had because they where to extreme. At least they know when to pull back but is that really enough?

Does anyone else think that this game is so AWESOMELY GORY that it could get an AO Rating like Manhunt 2 in 2007?

I would be surprised to see an AO rating on this game. I mean, its nothing we haven't seen before. Unfortunately, Mortal Kombat just has a reputation for pushing the limits of what is accepted in gaming (even thought they really dont). Ending up with an AO rating would have a seriously negative turn out. Sales for one would drop in some pretty big numbers, and the kommunity would be rather small after a while.

Due to lack of nudity or overly-sexual themes, MK will probably maintain the Mature rating.

They simply would scale back rather than get hit with the AO rating. That would damage sales too much. There's a reason it's taboo in the industry.

You both make solid points; this is nothing new here in terms of gore than the likes of the GOWs (Gears and God of War) haven't already conquered, but MK will get singled out due to reputation.

Good because i tire of the teen-age fan boys and what they think of the game

but there is no way they'd do it because thats where they make the money

sadly

This wont happen. An AO rating would need extreme depictions of violence AND sexual content. MK is always lacking in sexual content.

Mortal Kombat's reputation has no bearing on what rating it'll get. It'll be rated M no doubt. But c'mon guys. Grand Theft Auto gets a worse rep than Mortal Kombat and they're rated M.

I don't fear an AO rating with this MK.
MK helped create the ESRB back in the day.

Ever since then, the gore factor in games has increased because parents had to start becoming REAL parents.
They couldn't use the lame excuse of : "I didn't know it had a mature rating."

Also, as previously mentioned, GTA had violence and lots of sex, and it got an M rating.

The only way i could see MK 9 getting an AO rating, is if the MK 1 false-rumored nudality gets put in.

Don't forget that Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was given an AO rating for the "Hot Coffee", sex Mini-Game; and it had to be removed from the game to get the M rating it finally received. Being able to show heart, lungs, liver and intestines during a fatality, in HD; will be awesome and gory as hell and I just hope the ESRB doesn't have a problem with it.

It won't get an AO rating. Showing organs is nothing new even in the more accepted movie world, and the stuff in MK is hardly realistic, so I wouldn't sweat it.

sorry to sound so ignorant but whats so bad about an Adult Only rating why is it such taboo compared to the Mature rating?

It's because most retail stores like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, Amazon.com, K-Mart and any other place wont sell it and on top of that PlayStation and Microsoft said they would never release an AO rated game and that is why AO rated games are only found on the PC.

If that's true, then we have nothing to worry about.
MK 9 is specifically coming out on PS3 and 360.

As of yet, it's NOT on PC.

If GOW3 and NGII didn't get an AO rating, neither will MK. The violence unlike it was in the 90's, is hardly any trendsetting stuff. The only thing that will get censors riled up is... well, sex. So unless they're planning on introducing necrophilia, I wouldn't worry much.

Joshuaalt the biggest problem right now is people like you who keep on saying AO this, AO that even after games like God of War 3 got passed with the M rating. If this game gets passed in the UK uncut then this game will for sure not get the AO rating. When morons started asking the producers of the new MK game if they are worried about the AO rating, here they are saying that they ditched some of they're ideas. Manhunt 2 is a much different story then Mortal Kombat, because it is about a serial killer who could do a sexually graphic kill like pulling out testicles with pliers. Manhunt 2 did not get the AO rating for gore, if it got the AO rating for gore then half of the M rated games would have got the AO rating. You make no sense. After the situation with games like God of War getting the M rating, I thought that all this nonsense will finally stop with people bringing up the AO rating just because a game has gory kills yet I was wrong.

Don't be arrogant and bash OP for just asking a valid question. There's no doubt that the gore in this game surpasses many of the like (even God of War III). It's likely it won't be getting the AO rating but there's no reason to hunt the person if the question does rise.

Like many have said, they have nothing to gain if they go to an AO rating. Their priorities should be gameplay rather than visuals.

It would make sense for the MK team to see how far they can go with the fatalities -- they're what the series is famous for, after all. But it would also be a good idea to have scaled back versions on stand-by, in case the ESRB balks.

Hell no!
A scaled back version would scream of MKvsDC, all over again.

I highly doubt MK will get an AO rating, to begin with.
Personally, I think it'll get a hard M, but not AO.

I think everyone here is forgetting, that in order to achieve the AO ratiing, you would also have to include graphic language too. And that is NOWHERE to be found in the MK universe. Unless you count that stupid "GET THE **** OVER HERE," hehe. But in all seriousness, MK (2011) should and only be M-rated.

Now if there ever was an AO MK game, I'd be all for it. Children, move along, nothing to see here. :)

I doubt it will be AO even though it does have some contents related to AO games. Why, because the God of War series have sex games and it still stayed Mature. Therefore, MK will stay Mature!!! I have no fear of that. If it does end up an AO game, I'd probably be not that happy because of such little access to the game but at the same time, I'd like it because it will be "fun" for me. All I have to do is just some research of where to get AO games and after that, I'll have it already. ;-)

But yeah, I'd prefer it to be M rated so there will be more stores with access to the game. :-)

There was a question asked "Are There Any Fatality ideas deemed too gory for Mortal Kombat?" Boon Replied "Oh Yeah, without a doubt. We have fatality meetings and people come in with sketches or ideas and they'll stand up and kinda act it out. Somebody will say something dealing with parts of the body that you just don't want to mutilate, and we'll say 'Come on, you guys! We can't do better than this?' We want to be creative with it instead of just blatantly shocking like '...and then he stuffs it in his mouth!' You can figure out the rest."

So I guess there shouldn't be a problem with rating.

Just so everyone know, I want it to be as violent and brutal as possible.
