Am I Using Too Many Characters?

whats great about being a shang tsung main is that you can learn and be good at ALL chracters thus any character you do main can annhialate someone else who plays as them becuase of the damage boost

It's a little bit tougher than that though, because you also have to be good with Shang Tsung and his MAIN moves.

I do agree though, that if you can master Shang Tsung AND your opponent, you'd be a force to be reckoned with. ;-)

Right now I'm playing on a serious level with Sindel, Mileena, Stryker, Cyrax, and Sheeva. And I think it's kinda hampering my ability to play at a very high level with any character. But damnit! I have so much fun trying to learn different characters that I don't care really. In the process of learning Tsung who has given me the most problems so far. He plays so much differently than the other characters I can't seem to grasp it.

OP I say if you're having fun playing 8 characters (let's face it, your main should only be ONE character) than go for it. I agree with an above poster about how that is an advantage because you know the characters inside and out and that is great when you are up against someone using them.

I'm maining every playable character. it makes things more fun and diverse to use more than a couple characters, plus it makes you a lot better because you know the characters inside and out.

This. I played like 10 matches with this guy and he was like "Wow do you know how to use EVERY character well?"

Sounds a lot better than "Hey....your Sub-Zero is good."

i use 3 to 4 characters and have been told i use to many but i use them all well and see kno reason to just use one fighter if i'm good with more then just kratos.

sektor i use as a zoner/rushdown
kano i use as a random throw off
baraka i use as a rusher
kratos i just plan rush and beat down resently i have been using him this way and have gotten noticed by people that i have never even fought. i have been told by people from tym and mku that they have never seen him used that well.

but yes if i only use 1 of these 4 i would be 10 times better than i am right now.

You would be better, but it would be very boring, is just a game and a game is for having fun, and using 1 character exclusively is not enojoyable.

The fewer characters you use, the more time you have to focus on your chosen characters. There is no way around it. However, that shouldn't stop you from dabbling into other characters for fun. You should weigh which is more fun to you, being good at a fewer characters or switching up characters at a whim.

You can us every character in the game, but if you not good at them than what's the point. As long as your learning the moves, combo's and fatalities you know the character enough to play with them.

I play with:
Kabal
Scorpion
Ermac
Kenshi
Rain

I really want to get good with Freddy when he's released next week.

I still get my ass handed to me when playing players with over 300 wins than losses, but I don't really care that I lose; but i does make me angry when someone kicks my butt and can't even pull off the fatality, that's just bad.

I was wondering this since it is recommended that you main around five characters in MK9. However, I'm trying to main Mileena, Kitana, Jade, Ermac, Kabal, Kano, Nightwolf, and Reptile. Eight characters in total. And I'm seriously considering trying to main Cyrax. It's not really my fault either, I just feel attracted to so many of these characters. Will my skills suffer because of this? What can I do to mitigate this?
Where did you hear that?
Anyway, just "main" as many characters as you want and feel comfortable. You will find out yourself if they are too many to the point your skills suffer, then you will stick to less characters. There is no limit.
That being said I'm good (I don't know if I can say "main" anymore) with Kabal, Reptile, Mileena, Sub-Zero, Shang Tsung, Kenshi, Baraka, Jade and Kitana. Now I'm working on Sheeva and I'm planning to get good with more, the whole roster, if possible. I'm not a competitive player. It's my love for MK what makes me want to be as good as possible with every character.

It should not as long as you play with each of them a equal time (so you don't forgot there moves and such) I mained: Jade, Sheeva, Mileena, Kitana and Sindel X)

Strangly I main almost all the females.

Mileena
Sonya
Kitana
Jade
Sindel
Skarlet

Me to, and that's not a deliberate thing either. I currently use Jade, Sindel, Sheeva and Nightwolf. Just started using Sonya and can use Mileena on a fairly casual level. For some reasons I find the female characters pretty diverse, the vast amount of Ninjas used online puts me off using them massively. Wouldn't mind trynna get to grips with Shang Tsung at some point.

As for the original OP, well...I remember years back, it got to the stage that I could use everyone from MK II and SF II pretty competantly, the whole roster for both games. Now a days, fighting games have pretty deep, complex mechanics, so I would say using everyone in a fighter today would be harder compared to using everyone in a fighter 10-20 years ago.

Popmaster makes a pretty valid point with: "Like Bruce Lee said: "I do not fear the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks. I truly fear the man who has practiced 1 kick 10,000 times."

It's fine being pretty good with multiple characters, but I think that you can grow complacent and too casual as a consequence, and will never truly excel in anyone. That being said, I feel the more people a player can use, the easier "match ups" become, due to knowing how a certain character attacks, etc.

Only time will tell if you're using too many. If you end up being crap with everyone then I'd say cut that list down. Practice more first before you reach a conclusion.

I can play with half the cast and I'm still trying to learn new characters o_O
But aside from 3 or maybe 4 chars I'm not really good with everyone else.. :P

Knowing so much about different characters can be nothing but helpful, however, you may want to strengthen one character over the rest so you've always got that fall back guy or girl.

I believe everyone will eventually master a character to their full potential, leaving no more room for any more improvement. Example, I know Raiden and ermac inside out, their combos, specials, wakeup, strategies, mixups etc. I can not get any better with them, I will not use them for weeks , and then when I do I seem to have not lost a step. When I get to that point, that's when I explore other characters and try to achieve that level of mastery with them. So to answer your question, yes and no, you are using too many characters if you just know a few combos with the whole roster, but if you put in time and truly learn each character you use, there's no such thing as too many characters. Nothings more fun then taking a character into training mode for the first time and exploring the potential, then using them online. My personal strategy is for trueskill ranks 30+, I use my mains. 20-30, characters I know well not great. Under 20 is when I bring in my rookies.

Here's my list.
Ermac, Reptile, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Smoke, Raiden, Lui Kang, Mileena, Kabaal, Rain, Kenshi, and finally Johny Cage lmao. A total of 12 Characters. :)

Depends on how you like to play too...

I dont give a shit about competitve gaming, I just play for fun so I dont care if I play 10 chars and I only play good with 1 or 2 and suck with the rest, I prefer that than the guys that play 1 character only just because they want to learn all the crap abut him to win everytime, **** that... that's boring and dumb.

Saying it's boring is fine... but calling someone dumb... because They want to SUPER excel at one character... rather than spread out their skill amongst 10... isn't very nice.

can't believe someone revived the thread but I guess it's better than making a new one to re-discuss this.

If you don't care at all about being like top pro level. Go ahead and just spread out your mains and have fun with everyone. most online people suck anyways so you'll never be in trouble of falling behind if you're just playing online.

But if you care about trying to go to tournaments and get as far as you can or get ranked. I suggest only 1-2 characters. And just learning EVERYTHING about THEM and THEIR relation to other characters. For every character you learn you have to learn... 25something plus matchups.... for that character.

you may know every character's strings nad how they work. But you won't know say... oh this move beats this move if you initiate at the same time. but if you're a couple frames late his move outprioritizes you. Little things like that that are EVERYWHERE you'll have to relearn for each match up.
