Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

It's a yellow leotard with a black sharp pattern. It would have been a perfect look for Tanya in the ridiculous boobfest that was MK9, where you could see Mileena's pubic bone. It would look way out of place in MKX, though, and I agree it'd be out of character (but so were most of the MK9 costumes for the ladies).

I don't even see 'leotard' in that. All I see is sideboob central and a double laced thong, but really nice hair.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

Not a fan of the Deception white eyes, although I do like the fact they made her skin tone darker. Just a preference because she was a dark skinned character to begin with and I like nostalgia and staying true to the original design while modernizing at the same time. Could care less about the politics people like to throw in at any given opportunity.

I like the white eyes, but I think a perfect compromise would be if they were specific to one variation.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

I'm confused to how either of you think that the tanya fan art is actually a leotard...you guys okay?

It's a bikini, you're right, but it's that 'ninja leotard' MK style. Like how the other MK9 Edenian ninja gals got thongs and whatnot that were sort of patterned after their MK2/MK3 leotards.

Just throwing it out there since i've seen it said a few times now.. but I think Imperatrix Sindel is actually a dude haha xD

I am! But I don't really care about how people address me gender-wise so I don't bother to correct people on it. I used a female character as my username, so I sort of asked for it. ;P

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

I was going to start a thread about this but I figure you all won't mind me asking one simple but slightly off-topic question: Does Tanya now have a larger fan base than Jade? I always liked Jade's character design better and as I'm sure some of you know, I'm a sucker for secret characters. That being said, Tanya's my second favorite MK lady of all-time (Mileena's my first).

Oh, and another question to steer the discussion back on topic: Does this *updated* Tanya design (complete with white eyes and dark skin) trump all of Jade's previous designs?

Poor Jade never really had that much of a fanbase to begin with. She's one of my favorites, I'll note -- I would probably list Sindel, Jade, Mileena, Tanya, Kitana as my five favorites in that order if you'd asked me a couple years back (I like the ladies of Edenia!). At this point Tanya has crept up to #2 because I've been so eager to see her again and MK9 had me feeling so close-but-no-cigar.

Unfortunately Jade's allure as a 'secret character' was the majority of what carried her initially, and then she just kind of faded into the background. First she was overshadowed as 'just Kitana's friend', then she got a nice promotion to Sindel's top warrior but the new timeline tossed that out. The rivalry with Tanya felt slightly forced. I think Sindel as queen and Jade as her general in free Edenia was a great idea and I wish they'd done more with it.

I liked Jade's alternate costume in MK9, but overall she hasn't had many great looks. This new Tanya look is, like most of the MKX looks, one of the best looks I think MK has put on a female character. I love the MKX redesigns for the women in particular.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

I agree that Jade probably doesn't have the strongest of fanbases, but I'd say she's probably the 4th most popular female. I'd probably list them like
1) Sonya
2) Kitana
3) Mileena
4) Jade
5) Sindel / Tanya
6) Sindel / Tanya
7) Li Mei
- the rest

I actually really liked Jade's costumes in Deception and then her main costume in MK9. As for Tanya's, her Deception was my favourite. But Tanya's face is probably one of the best i've seen. Comes close to her Deception face

I share your pain when it comes to MK:2011 being a Tanya tease. Have you seen the mods on YouTube where people have hacked the game to make her playable? Most look really buggy but hey, it is something. I hope that someone will hack MKX and re-color the yellow bits of the costume green so we can have a "Jade mod." :-p

Want to know something funny? I once saw people saying that Tanya and Jade were put into a feud solely because they were the token black girls of the game. Lol I'm not sure if that is truly the reason why Boon and company had them paired as enemies but maybe. I agree with what you said, though. Jade started off really special and I still dig her a lot but I think Tanya's passed her for now. We've gotten more of a look at Tanya's personality and background, too. She seems more developed all around, despite being the "younger" character in terms of creation history. For the record, though, I don't think Jade was left out of MKX without reason. They are probably planning something big for her, especially considering the fact that Kitana rules the Netherrealm now. Who knows, she might end up being Kitana's general. Now THAT...would be something, eh?!

The MKX redesigns are certainly good. I am really looking forward to seeing Tanya's alternate outfit. It would be great to see her have a yellow Victorian-styled dress. I'm very rarely in favor of conservative clothing in Mortal Kombat but I think Tanya could pull it off. Plus, those sorts of dresses would look phenomenal with her trademark chokers.

I have seen those! They're buggy but it's still nice to see her in action.

I actually think that Tanya and Jade's rivalry was, in part, because they were the token black girls. Not in any kind of bad way, but just because it mirrored the Kitana/Mileena thing nicely -- two 'ninja' women who look similar, one good one evil, just with different color costumes. It made sense plot-wise, though, since Jade was Edenia's general and Tanya was its great traitor. I just never felt like it went far enough --it would've been cooler if we'd gotten some understanding of Tanya and Jade's relationship with one another before Tanya betrayed her people. Were they friends? That would've really made it work better for me.

I think Jade will definitely be back in some capacity, whether as a playable character or an important NPC. Her appearance in Kitana's ladder ending is pretty telling, in conjunction with her total absence from MKX as a revenant. It's almost like ghost-Jade (or whatever she is in Kitana's ending) can see the original timeline and is sending revenant Kitana images of it.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

I see a couple more pages has been added to this thread. Too bad it's yet again about her skintone. I guess some people have toruble letting that topic go...

Yeah, exactly. Tanya was the first black woman in MK

Actually, Jade is. She had dark skin in MK2 arcade version and later in UMK3. Tanya debuted in MK4.

...

As for the fanart costume used in Goro's ending, that's a top a thong. Not a leotard. A leotard is connected from top to bottom.

Clearly it's important to some people. There's no need to be snide. It's only been a few days since the model was changed, and this is literally a post about Tanya's character model. Why shouldn't it be a topic of conversation?

If you read to the end of the paragraph, literally two more sentences, you'll see my point:

"Jade was a tan white woman in the Trilogy games (literally, a digitized white actress with a Photoshop spray tan) and was not reimagined as a black woman until the 3D era. I loved Jade's 3D era redesign, of course, but a lot of people had already imprinted on Tanya by then as 'the black woman in MK'. "

Jade in MK2 and UMK3 was played by white actresses (Katalin Zamiar and Becky Gable) and the sprites were palette swapped by the art team. This is where a lot of people's 'she's not black, she's just tan' argument comes from that persists to this day. Her official confirmation as a black character was her 3D era look in Deception, where she had darker skin and black facial features.

As for the fanart costume used in Goro's ending, that's a top a thong. Not a leotard. A leotard is connected from top to bottom.

We went over this already as well, yes. I meant it was a 'ninja costume' like the ones Mileena, Kitana and Jade wear, not that it was literally a leotard.

You really don't have to be so rude.

I didn't mean to sound rude, I'm just disappointed that people keep bringing up the same issues over and over again. My apologies if it seemed otherwise.

Jade might have been played by a "white" actress, but Jade as a character was still "black" in skin-colour. Anyways, let's not fill up this thread with any more of this, so if you disagree, then let it be as it is and let's move on, alright? ^^

I agree with you, actually, that she was. I was just talking about how fans perceived the characters.

I think with an issue as charged as race you have to let people talk things out a bit. It's only been three days since the model change -- plus, the mods specifically directed conversation about the change to this thread.

But I understand that these things can become exhausting -- certainly I stopped checking any thread about Kung Jin quite a while ago, because the arguments about his sexuality (amazing, when it's barely mentioned in the game at all!) are intolerable to me.

I just think what makes this forum preferable to other MK forums I've posted at is that people debate these things more respectfully.
