Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

Since you're both "thinking alike," I'll respond to both of you at the same time. There's a funny thing about what I had mentioned to you, Reiko, is when you had asked me what I thought about Tanya's previous appearance, me mentioning that I liked the tone of her skin was the first time I had mentioned that anywhere on any of the sites I go on.

This would be actually the first time anyone has seen me say that about her skin tone, so no, I haven't gotten "attacked" by Tanya fans because of it. And if they are planning on verbally bashing me because of it, not only will I sit in my chair and laugh my butt off, but also will look at that user and think unkindly stuff about them for a good minute until I shrug it off and care about more meaningful stuff to do. I mean I can't tell you how many times I've had people say to me stupid crap about my favorites, you don't see me getting heavily defensive about it, so neither should they.

I couldn't care less how people think of me hating a character for their fans. I'm not the only user on these sites to look at a fan base and dislike a character. If someone has a deep, serious problem with me not liking their favorite they can speak to me themselves. And like I said before, if someone is really going to get so aggravated at me for thinking that her skin tone was fine, they need to get a hold of themselves and realize how embarrassing it is to get incredibly defensive at someone for having a different opinion. That is usually the problem. Not all, but a handful of fans that I have talked to in the past seem to have a hard time understanding what "respect other opinions" mean. That is usually the main problem I have with this fan base.

I am not all butthurt because a few fans called me some names or wish to see me dead because I spoke differently about their characters, I am mostly laughing my butt off until my gut starts hurting and tears are coming out of my eyes because I cannot understand why someone feels the need to get so defensive at criticism or differences of opinions.

I am going to ask you kindly to stop giving me a "hard time." I don't like it and it's really becoming quite aggravating every time you quote me. Please stop doing this and just have a conversation with no smart ass remarks.

And as I said before, this is the first time I've ever spoken out about the issue. And if Tanya fans really want to hate me because I think her skin tone was fine, then there's definitely some bigger issues that are needed to be checked out. I am not blind, of course I know why they got incredibly upset about this, but in my perspective, I didn't have a problem with it. So again, if her fans are going to go out of their way to harass me or whatever all because I thought her skin looked fine, bring it. The worst thing I can do is report their actions to a moderator.

I'm basically on the same boat with this.

Sure, we can have a normal conversation. Here's a question for you without any sort of sarcasm behind it, Kitty: Why would you be fine with such a drastic character makeover for Tanya? She's had brown skin since her debut. Would you be fine if say, Quan Chi randomly had red skin in MKX? Better yet, what if Kitana was given Tanya's original skin color? Would you be fine with that, as well? If so, I'd like to know why. I know continuity is a bit iffy in the series but...really?

Here's how I look at this skin problem:

Tanya's appearance, in my perspective, did not look bad at all. Her design was truly beautiful because it was a different look for her. The only thing I would say they should have changed was to give her shorter hair to avoid that horrible animation it has, or have it tied in a bun. I saw nothing wrong with the outfit, the color of her hair, her face, her eyes... She was still dark enough to tell that she has darker skin.

I've seen countless of inconsistencies throughout the series for the last twenty years that at this point in time of the series, I don't care what characters look like as much as I used to. If hardcore fans of said character wants to see change, fine, they have the right to speak about it, just like I have the right to say, "I don't see a problem." Do I think it's a dumb thing that her fans spoke out about it loudly? No, because if Netherrealm didn't want their fans demanding stuff, they shouldn't be on Twitter. (Of course, if they start threatening the developers, that's a whole different story)

Now, of course if they were to turn Quan Chi's skin red, people would have a problem with that because it would just look downright silly. I on the other hand might think it would be a cool demonic look to him because I am THAT kind of person.

The issue is that Tanya's whitewashing wasn't simply an inconsistency. It was a symptom of a larger pattern of behavior that impacts black, South Asian, and Latina women all throughout the world when it comes to media representation. Whether or not NRS intended to be racist (most people don't ever intend to be racist!) it was a messed up thing to do.

Some good articles on the whitewashing phenomenon that targets dark-skinned people and especially dark women, because lighter women are seen as more elegant and beautiful: 1, 2, 3, 4

The problem with that, though, is that Tanya's skin color was such a random change. They did not even try to explain why she suddenly had white skin. It was a complete overhaul of her previous design. You say that you could tell that she had dark skin but many beg to differ, myself included. Her skin was white, not dark or even tan, Kitty. If you're trying to make the argument that she looked like a light skinned black woman, I'll have to disagree. Chris Brown, Fefe Dobson, Karyn Parsons, Ludacris, and Sasha Banks are all light skinned black celebrities. Tanya was, by far, lighter than all of them. To be frank, even Zoe Saldana (who is Latina by way of the Dominican Republic) is darker than Tanya's pre-patch update. Was it a nice design? Sure. Was it Tanya, though? No, not at all. I am a huge fan of Tanya and when I looked at it, I honestly had no idea who it was supposed to be.

Just because we have lots of inconsistencies, that doesn't mean stuff should be changed just for the hell of it. There was literally NO reason to change Tanya's skin color. I ask you politely: what did that add to the character design? New outfits and moves freshen up characters, not changing what helps us, as fans, recognize our long-time favorites.

You'd be fine with Quan Chi having red skin because it would give him a demonic look? Cool, that's reasonable. How about this: what if Kitana was given Tanya's brown skin without any sort of explanation?

I never understood the issue of Tanya's skin tone. She looked about the same color as me. I only disliked the stiffness of her hair.

Disagree all you want, I however saw she had dark skin. If others happen to disagree, that's fine. But no matter how you put it in your perspective, I see dark skin and you don't. Basically it comes to where we both just have to agree to disagree and leave it like that.

To simply put, I saw what she was in this game merely as a placeholder and didn't think her skin tone was that big of a deal to a lot of people. I knew she was going to get some changes when she finally becomes available for us to play as, however, I didn't think they were going to do that much to her to where I actually am considering her placeholder look well over her new look.

Oh please.

You're right, just because this series has a long history of inconsistencies doesn't mean they should start changing things up for the hell of it. The problem though, they can. Clearly they cave to fan demands and change stuff if the demand becomes too heavy. This company isn't consistent with their characters at all, they can't even get the pronunciations right. I really don't think the skin issue should be this big of a problem.

Her "new" skin tone didn't add anything, I saw her as Tanya and nothing more. And if you really couldn't tell that was Tanya, I don't know what to say to you that will make you happy. I saw her as Tanya, others saw her as Tanya. You didn't. I really don't know what you want me to say here.

The only thing though that I would say that is way different about her is that they dropped that dreadfully annoying voice of hers from her debut. Despite that I thought her gibberish was one of the funnier ones, she did have a pretty annoying voice for a female character.

Well, they wouldn't do that so I really don't have an answer to this. If Kitana randomly got a new skin color, sure people will be pissed. I'd be, "Oh look, change," and simply couldn't care less. You're basically asking the wrong person these kinds of questions because really, I'm not bothered by stuff like this. Even if they were to randomly turn Sub-Zero black (not referring to his brother), I wouldn't care.

I'm gonna stop you right there. I am not the kind of person who thinks they need to start throwing in politics in a fighting game. There's nothing I see being represented with these characters. If you do, okay, but how I see them are characters made for a fictional game based around parodies and homages to other media. So, you can sit here and try to educate me about how other races might have a problem or think that people have a problem with the media representation of a video game character, I literally do not take video games to that extent of seriousness and will not start now. Sorry.

It's not 'throwing in politics'. The world is political. Media is political. Nothing happens in a vacuum; we all live in this culture. Why do you think it is that only Jade and Tanya have had this 'skin color inconsistency' issue?

But I won't try to convince you of something you say you won't consider, so nevermind!

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

Perhaps we've already seen Tanya's alt - Goro's ending. Part of me would love this, but another part of me says it's too revealing to coincide how they've revamped females costumes in this game

I doubt it sincerely, given this tweet from Boon today about the fanart that was copied for Goro's ending.

I'm not sure how you "saw" that she had dark skin. She was clearly white but, if you claim otherwise, believe what you wish. As I stated before, her skin color is part of what made her unique.

You responded with, "Oh please" when I said I wasn't sure who she was supposed to be initially. Let's look at this closely: that character model was a white woman, had much shorter hair than the classic Tanya, and was outfitted in something similar to what Zafina from Tekken wears. How was I supposed to know who she was, considering the fact that it looked nothing like Tanya? I'm not sure how familiar you are with the character's look so I've put some pictures in this message so you can see where I am coming from. Notice a few things? Tanya always wears a choker of some sort, in addition to rocking yellow and black. That "placeholder model" as you called it is not wearing a choker but rather a beaded necklace that looks Middle Eastern in nature and has golden clothes on. How you could see that model as Tanya, I will never know. Direct your attention to the following pictures, please and thanks:

I don't have to direct my attention anywhere because I see her as Tanya. If you're having this big of a problem with me seeing this character as Tanya, either agree to disagree, or I'll just direct my attention back to Call of Duty and just ignore this issue. I really don't get what you want me to say out of here since I've pretty much repeated myself as to why I like her previous look and that I'm not a fan of hers but will still talk to people about her.

I don't care for the changes they made to her, especially returning that stupid Deception crap they gave nearly half the roster to with those damn pure white eyes. I saw nothing wrong with her model and if you can't accept that or agree that I like something different, then agree to disagree. That's all I can really say because this is kinda starting to sound like the same old same old that doesn't really have an end to it. I liked her placeholder design more than the newer one and why I do have already been listed so I don't need to repeat myself.

You can return to your game of Call of Duty.

Re: Tanya's Design Compared to Older Designs.

I'm hoping they stay away from that design.
Tanya is not, never has been, nor ever will be that level of nude, I'm sure.
It doesn't fit her character.

I like it a lot. I wouldn't mind it at all if we got that instead of a freshly made outfit for her because it is a throwback to MK4 and that was my favorite look for her.

How is it in any way a throwback to MK4? Lol. I don't see it.

It's a yellow leotard with a black sharp pattern. It would have been a perfect look for Tanya in the ridiculous boobfest that was MK9, where you could see Mileena's pubic bone. It would look way out of place in MKX, though, and I agree it'd be out of character (but so were most of the MK9 costumes for the ladies).
