Online Play

Re: Finally an update about online play!

"Thank you for supporting Mortal Kombat! Due to the overwhelmingly positive reception to the game, Mortal Kombat has millions of online matches being initiated worldwide every day, and we have run into some unanticipated technical issues. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios are aware of the issues with the online gameplay – specifically with "King of the Hill" and Ranked 1 v. 1 matches - and we want to assure our fans that we are focused on resolving online issues ASAP. We have added a “Technical Issues” section to our forum so please be sure to let us know what issues you are having so we can address those as soon as possible. Users will begin seeing improvements in online play over the course of the next two weeks. In the meantime please note that none of this will impact the single-player or offline multiplayer experience, and we greatly appreciate your patience!"

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. I can't wait for them to update things!

Re: Finally an update about online play!

If they want people to spend money on their DLC, they know they need to fix the issues, so I doubt it will take a year. At least I won't buy anything.

Re: Finally an update about online play!

I hate to burst everyone bubble but if anyone bought UFC Undisputed 2010 powered by Gamespy(pieces of ****) Then this is a walk down memory lane. The truth is the online won't be fixed for at least a year I'd put $ on it. Most people will have already put the game down before they can play online properly.

The truth is, you're an idiot. Tekken had the same problems with their online if not worse than MK and they got theirs fixed in 2-3 weeks. MK will be fine within a month.

Re: MK Finally Acknowledges Online Issues. Working To Fix it. Weee!

I doubt that they're able/willing to do something about it.

2 weeks before release they said it was the best of their netcodes ever, they worked so hard on it, it's lag free etc pp.
And what does it do except lagging? Oh right, freezing the whole bloody game.

So they either lied deliberately to boost first-day-sales (and won't give a rats ass anyway) or they actually thought their netcode is good and they just simply suck at programming (and will suck at it for more than the next few weeks).

So either way I don't think there will be a lot of change.
They'll probably just use the lag problem to promise they'll be gone with MK10 to boost sales then.

As a programmer though, I can understand how they could have been telling the truth and just got blindsided by this. I mean when they were testing it themselves within their QA department it probably was super awesome, but when it got out into the real world and there was a few million people from different regions with different internet connections going through different providers and all the variables that come along with that, trying to play games against each other, it fell over. I mean, they probably should have done load testing and they could have maybe tested it more thoroughly or thrown more diverse test cases at it, but you can't always account for everything, and maybe they just flat out ran out of time.

I'm sure it will be addressed, I don't know why people keep jumping to the assumption that NRS is out to screw us when all through development of this game they have shown the complete opposite.

Re: Finally an update about online play!

Acknowledging a problem and fixing it are two entirely different things... The ******** game has officially begun. Let's see if NRS can do more than talk the talk....I won't be buying their future title until this one works...

Very well put and exactly what I wanted to say. You can't just build something and say it's perfect. You need testing, testing, and more testing. They more than likely ran out of time or severely underestimated the amount of online activity.

Have some faith, guys. I don't think they will just fall through on their first real MK with WB.

Also, I think some of you don't really understand how business works. If you sell a poorly product and make false promises about it then you lose buyers. If you lose buyers, you lose money. And I severely doubt WB wants to lose money, so they are going to make things right.

Re: PSN and MK online soon to be aftermath.

Does anyone else feel that with PSN going down that a large quantity of PSN players will leave. But also it goes to the fact if PSN is still down a lot of people will also just stop buying PS3 to an extent. But with MK9 as many have said the online is subpar. With the aftermath soon to be of PSN being hacked are we gonna see a lot less MK players on MK9 online on PSN, or will it still have the huge fanbase online?

Not at all. PSN being down simply means that PS3 players will not have the ability to take MK online until PSN is back up. People who take fighting games online are serious gamers...they won't let the fact that PSN is down deter them from playing MK when it comes back up. Do you think everyone who was waiting for SOCOM is going to be done with it and not play it when PSN finally comes back up? If anything, sales will jump up from the release date and it'll see an online boom. Same goes for MK. Believe me, when PSN comes back the competition for MK will be fierce.

The amount of people who are jumping off from PSN and PS3 in general and going to XBox is VERY slim. You might think it's a lot because you'll see people here claiming to do it, but trust me...the amount of people "jumping ship" is a very small ratio. 10 or 15 people on a forum saying "I'm going to 360" don't speak for tens of thousands of other players.

Imagine how people who are dedicated to DC Universe Online feel right about now? Not only are they bummed, but Sony/WB is getting spanked hard by this. They're going to have no choice but to give subscribers a free month since it's a subscription service.

Trust me...when PSN comes back up, MK will explode. No worries.

I don't think you understand how real life business actually works. If you sell a poorly product and make false promises, then you are called Microsoft, Sony, or any other big company with a big enough marketing department and you make billions.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Marketing > Quality. That's not even new, there's enough examples out there where the worse product outsold the better one because of better marketing. I will give you one example: have a look at Microsoft's and Apple's history. I don't like Apple at all, but their OS (I forgot the name, some chick name) was way better than MSDOS and the first Windows versions. And yet, Microsoft made way more money. Why? Because Bill Gates, as much as I hate the little scumbag, sure knows how to sell thin air as gold and he knows how to use this money to make even more of it.

Plus: considering those masses of fanboys in the forums, that still claim the game is perfect and flame anyone who posts another bug, the marketing hype already worked out perfectly. So no need at all for WB or NRS to make the game better unless it would provide enough opportunity to make money by selling more dlc or MK10. Considering how many copies they already sold and how much has to be done to get a decent netcode, they probably couldn't care less even from that standpoint.

Re: Finally an update about online play!

I get laggy matches every now and then but that doesn't bother me... it's the freezing that happens once in a blue

Let me poke some holes in your example. Let's say Microsoft kept never built another operating system besides Windows 95. A hell of a lot more people would be using UNIX based systems right now than they already do, because 95 was a piece of shit. They didn't, however, and now we have Windows 7. You can't argue that it's a subpar system. It has it's flaws, sure. But they didn't go out of there way to "sell thin air as gold". They improved on their initial product to give something of better quality. Also, Bill Gate's is a figurehead and doesn't play as big of a role in things as you imply.

As for the whole Microsoft v. Apple thing, whatever, look where Apple is now. Windows excelled where people needed it when computers started getting big and that's why it sold more. I'm not arguing that Microsoft didn't have proper marketing, but you can't sell a crap product and expect to make money.

Don't take this as me trying to be offensive, because I'm not. I'm simply trying to get my point across that a weak product will lose customers and companies don't want to lose money.

Back to the topic. My point is, I don't believe WB or NRS will leave its customers to blow in the wind waiting for a fix. It would be an awful decision business wise and I don't think its one they will make. It's not going to happen tomorrow, but I don't think we will be let down.

Re: Finally an update about online play!

ITT: People who would have found something to complain about even if the game had came out completely perfect.

Give them a break guys, dudes work three years straight on this game, and put it out. I'm sure they figured on release day that people would have plenty single player stuff to do before going online. So they assumed wrong, or maybe they just took a week off to recharge? Either way, and in my opinion, all of your attitudes... Well at least the bunch of "they should have said something, this is stupid, fix it now"... are way out of line.

I still don't understand, that even after so many years of technology in general always being shaky and never completely perfect, there's still people out there that expect it to be.

It's okay you all, stuff happens like this and it's what keeps us human. Worry more about the day when nothing breaks. When that happens it'll be because robots control us, and have made us slaves. Be happy shit breaks, so that humans can still be number one on this earth.

Sure I understand it sucks, but adapt to it. I've timed the lag, and changed my play style accordingly. Yeah it can be frustrating, but I've been able to play around it. Try and do the same, because you can complain all you want, it won't help the matter, only make you look like a child.

Lag will only hurt long term sales and their entire reputation. I think they need to fix it, and I'm sure they think they do too.

And where exactly did you poke holes in my example?
BTW: yes, when Microsoft started with MSDOS, it was pretty much Bill Gates alone who sold it to IBM. And he had pretty much nothing to sell at the time.
MSDOS kept being arguably worse than Unix, and later, Windows always was second (or worse) to others (Amiga OS, MacOS, Linux, you name it).

Microsoft didn't even come up with windows, they bought it from xerox, who wrote it but didn't see the potential in it, so they almost gave it to Bill Gates for free.

Your argument that Windows 7 is a quality system is pretty much a prime example what marketing can achieve.
Have you even had a look at Linux or MacOS recently? Most GNU/Linux distributions and MacOS are by far still superior to Windows. The fact that Windows still can't manage multiple desktops like Unix already could decades ago is not even worth laughing at.

And still, after decades of being a sub par OS, Windows still dominates the market. And why? Because Bill Gates knows how marketing works, how to buy out or simply root out any competition.
You don't have to have the best product, you have to have people think you have the best product, or better yet: the only product.

And as I already said, this is ONE example and there are many many more for anyone willing to use their head and actually compare products themselves instead of relying on commercials and review magazines that sell out to the highest bidder anyway.

I sure as hell hope so.
I bought this game for online play, not as a dust collector.

But I seriously doubt it will ever be even remotely comparable to SSF4 online play.
They promoted the netcode as lag free and I haven't seen lags like that in a very long time. A little laggy at peak times? maybe. But 500-1000 ms lags around the clock? That's not even close to being playable. They won't be able to fix that with a few tweaks here and there. This is way too severe.

MK vs DC came on November 16th 2008 n I only remember it bc it was a Sunday so it hasn't even been 3 years since that game n they didn't get to start this game for months after when midway went under so don't say they worked on it for 3 years.. But I agree people find anything to ***** about..I'm happy with it as is...my kollector Stratagy Guide on the other hand I'm not happy with :-$
