Online Play

Has anyone read this about Mortal Kombat online experience? Lag Free NRS says.

Mortal Kombat was designed from day one as a robust, fully-featured online experience, said the NetherRealm development team during a conference call with PlayStation Universe.

"During pre-production, we basically planned around online and all the cool features we wanted," said Adam Urbano, senior producer of Mortal Kombat. "...the online play — which is really, really, really lag-free — would not have been possible if we didn't start two years ago in front of the basic technology."

Since online fighting games live and die by their net code, the Mortal Kombat online team developed code that pulls "every possible bit" of gameplay data and sends it in individual packets. The end result of two years of planning is a system that's as efficient as possible, ensuring the best possible online connection between two players.

"We do a lot of things, too, to ensure that the net conditions between multiple players are perfect and ideal for a match-up," added Urbano. "Obviously, there's nothing you can do if two people have a crappy connection — the game just isn't going to be as good as if there's a good connection — but we've optimized it as much as an engine can possibly be optimized."

Gamers can hop online and bash some heads when Mortal Kombat hits store shelves on April 19, 2011 in North America.

This is a bunch of garbage how can they say such things when MK is the worst experience I ever had on an online game. I cant even do a single juggle online because the lag is so horrid.

i thought the lag was caused by the gamespy servers and has nth to do with the "AWESOME NRS NETCODE" ^^

Re: Has anyone read this about Mortal Kombat online experience? Lag Free NRS says.

First, I just want to say that there are a lot of games that are much laggier online than MK, but that is by no means an excuse IMO.

Anyway, I think that's old news from before release. I know in the last week or so, NRS has finally somewhat admitted fault to the online service. They say they are attempting to fix it, but I take that with a grain of salt. I'm sure they WANT to, but who knows if they will actually be able to repair it.

Actually, I remember Tom Brady saying last week that there is no way NRS is going to continue using GameSpy in future games. At least that is a little reassuring.

I have no idea, does that mean they have to change there servers or what. Why cant they use the same netcode and servers as SF

Re: Has anyone read this about Mortal Kombat online experience? Lag Free NRS says.

I guess we'll have an answer along with the next patch.

(PS3 user here, zero MK9 online experience) Did you guys say that it was only during KOTH matches that it was laggy?

Re: Has anyone read this about Mortal Kombat online experience? Lag Free NRS says.

i never had a problem wit lag when psn was up...but had a hard time getting a match to join.....am wired connect2

Re: Has anyone read this about Mortal Kombat online experience? Lag Free NRS says.

DO you guys think they are changing from gamespy to another server?

Im on 360, and it's much laggier on KOTH for sure.

Re: Has anyone read this about Mortal Kombat online experience? Lag Free NRS says.

I guess they didn't test the netcode out with distance lag and various connection setups. The good thing is that they working on a patch to fix this but I have my doubts it'll be as they promised though. We'll jus have to wait and see~

Re: Has anyone read this about Mortal Kombat online experience? Lag Free NRS says.

I think they have tested their server network infrasctruture with less than 100 players at once, and , took early conclusions about the performance ..... once the game released, so, the experimental servers seems to have trouble dealing with such amount of players online ..... I think maybe they are fixing this ..... and the original netcode possible can work OK with better planned servers if they are trying to provide this ..... let's see

i hope the lag is fixed :(

Re: Has anyone read this about Mortal Kombat online experience? Lag Free NRS says.

NRS has already conceded on their official website www.themortalkombat.com that there is a problem with online play. It has absolutely nothing to do with connections, links, or setups. What has caused confusion among many (along with the amorphous and conflicting statements from NRS) is that it's more then one problem. There is clearly a problem with the matchmaking, which is mostly likely on the Gamespy end (you cannot find matches for ranked games, and when you try to challenge people you regularly get "The game session is no longer available), as well as the input lag and desynchronization errors that occur during the actual matches themselves (netcode from NRS, not attributable to Gamespy).

While it's understandable to have problems on any huge release, it's now been almost three weeks and other then a vague statement by NRS that they know there is a problem, there has been no solution offered or timeline given. This is unacceptable to the many people who laid out big money for MK, TE and custom sticks, and (in some cases) game systems just to play the game.

Agreed. I knew as soon as I got my game and saw the "Gamespy" logo on it that there was going to be problems. Gamespy blows ass.

This quote just reminded me that I bought King of Fighters XII when it came out, which, if you didn't know, made the lag in Mortal Kombat look non-existent.

Re: Has anyone read this about Mortal Kombat online experience? Lag Free NRS says.

You all must have the crappiest online connections ever. Other than taking a while to get into a game (Which hardly happens anymore) I have very little to NO lag at all lately. Im pretty happy with the online experience

Same... I've used GameSpy in the past and, while once in a game all was fine, getting to that point had always been a problem.
Again, this was years ago, but finding games with proper filters wasn't easy back in the days.
I really hope they switch for another company but I doubt they will... they are probably under contract.

As for the netcode... well, Ed Boon's just gonna have to go see the programming team dressed as Raiden (with white contacts of course) and shout:

- "Can any of you mortals tell me who's responsible for the netcode? You are a shame to EarthRealm and shall be sent to the Outworld to be one of Shao Khan's slaves! Rubbing his feet is something you might be able to do without failure."

It looks sooo nice in my head... ;)

They said they would hope to improve the online within the next 2 weeks, that was last week.
And while they could be coincidental, I have actually had some vastly improved games since then.

Re: Has anyone read this about Mortal Kombat online experience? Lag Free NRS says.

Once NRS attempts to patch the problems with the online, we will have to wait for Microsoft to approve the patch(es), which can take a long time (see Homefront).
