Great news! Mortal Kombat has been nominated for Best Fighting Game of the Year for the 2011 Spike VGAs! So be sure to go and cast your vote!

This year's Spike Video Game Awards will air on Spike TV on December 10th, 2011. There has been a history of Warner Bros. Games and other publishers making big upcoming game announcements, like the Kratos announcement last year, so it's usually worth tuning in.

NetherRealm Studios's creative director Ed Boon just teased on Twitter to keep an eye out for "Unexpected surprise" from NetherRealm Studios. He initially posted a message just a "Surprise from NetherRealm studio coming...?" but later deleted that and rephrased it to stress the word "Unexpected". See the quote below:

"Let me rephrase that: Unexpected surprise from NetherRealm Studios coming.......?" - @noobde

What do you think it is? Leave us a comment on this story what you think it is. Then we can tell later if the surprise is really as "Unexpected" as Ed said it will be.

Updated: Ed Boon later Tweeted that they have three surprises brewing. Only time will tell on what these end up being.

Sony held an event yesterday to announce the PS Vita launch date for PAL territories of February 22, 2012 and the titles available for launch. Along with the launch titles, Sony also mentioned a long list of titles that are in development, which included none other than WB Games with a game titled simply "Mortal Kombat".

However, in a presentation slide to illustrate the numerous number of games in development, the previously rumored "Vitality" title was one again front and center, this time in a more stylized and final logo.

While the game has not been officially announced by WB Games, we can all but guarantee that the game will be titled Mortal Kombat Vitality. Granted, what kind of game Vitality will be is still unknown, but it is good to see that Warner Bros. is pushing the franchise to the front lines of their console launch efforts.

Soon after Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection was released with a some issues making the experience less than ideal a patch was promised. Well the wait is almost over because according to a Twitter post from from NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon a patch is due soon. Ed said the release is currently targeted to be "around Dec. 6" but also adds it's not a firm date so it's safer to bet that we'll get the much anticipated patch in early December.

Another Tweet that Ed posted shines a light on the time it takes to put a patch out: "Testing, submitting & approvals is a LONG process." From what I've seen in the various community forums a lot of a fans were unaware of these processes and were being impatient with the patch taking longer than a week. Video game development (up to and including patches) takes lots of time and money. We should be happy that NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games saw it necessary to make things right, this is something Midway seldom did even with their major Mortal Kombat console releases.

The Examiner has discovered that Amazon France has a Mortal Kombat "Game of the Year" edition listed for pre-order right now. Could this be one of the Unexpected Surprises that Ed Boon has been teasing?

There is not much information, other than a release date of February 28th, 2012 and a price of 39.99 Euros ($53.49 in U.S. dollars). Don't worry about the price conversion as in Europe new games typically release for 50-70 Euros so this is a price, and would possibly translate to a $39.99 price in the US. If this "Game of the Year" edition follows suit of other GOTY releases it's likely it will include all the previously released DLC on disc or with redemption codes inside of the box.

I would expect an official announcement of this edition to happen sometime in early 2012 after the Holidays are over, so stay tuned.

Updated 12/2: Appears that the UK ratings board BBFC has now listed a "Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition" in the UK as of today. What this likely means is what it will be called will either vary by region or a final name has not yet been decided. Stayed tuned as more details are likely to be revealed soon.
