Galloping Ghost Hosts Star Studded Shang Tsung's Fight Night IV This Saturday

This Saturday the legendary Galloping Ghost Arcade is hosting another Mortal Kombat Tournament Special event that should not be missed if you are in the Midwest. For those of you unaquinted, Galloping Ghost Arcade is located in the suburbs of Chicago in Brookfield, IL and is home to more arcade machines than any other arcade in the USA. The arcade is also run by huge Mortal Kombat fans and often have the cast of the original games show up for special events. They even have custom made arcade cabinets for both Mortal Kombat (2011) and Injustice: Gods Among Us. I have no doubt that next year they'll have a Mortal Kombat X cabinet.

This MK event like the previous event back in January, will have many actors from Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Mortal Kombat 3. in attendance. But this event has the largest lineup yet of Mortal Kombat actors yet who will be making appearances, so if you are looking to just meet them or get autographs, this is the day to go!

Here's a quick list of the current confirmed roster of attendees:

Daniel Pesina - (Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, & Reptile)
Rich Divizio - (Kano, Baraka, Kabal, & Quan Chi)
Phillip Ahn - (Shang Tsung)
Kerri Hoskins Branson - (Sonya Blade)
John Parrish - (Jax)
Lia Montelongo - (Sindel)
Sal Divita - (NightWolf, Sektor, Cyrax, Smoke)
Brian Glynn - (Shao Khan)
Carlos Pesina - (Raiden)
Tony Marquez - (Kung Lao)

The event starts this Saturday June 28th at 11am and runs all night until close at 2am, with the actors stopping by when they can and tournaments running throughout the day. It'll also be streamed to the gallopingghostarcade Twitch channel for those who can't attend. Or are busy that day and just want to watch later.

For more details and updates, sign up on their Facebook Event post or just show up that day.

Sadly once again I can not attend due to previous plans, but hopefully you MK fans can! But hopefully we can get a report or two from the fans in attendance again.

The NetherReport #3 - Our Ed Boon Interview, Kiefer not in MKX, @midnight, E3 Recap

TRMK's Ed Boon Interview about MKX

We were lucky enough to get a chance to sit down with a very busy Ed Boon at E3 last week to discuss Mortal Kombat X. In the interview Ed discusses lots of different topics with us. Including teasing a "character from MK4" as well as a "new ality" which will be revaled later.
TRMK: Fans expect this game to follow the storyline of MK4 and beyond, but it looks like you are taking the story in another direction. Will fans see some familiar faces from the series they haven’t seen yet in MK9?

Ed Boon: You will definitely see a Mortal Kombat 4 character, I believe that's the first time I've said that. You will also see some of the later game's fighters. You'll also see cameo's in the story mode. Some really fun ones.

Be sure to read the whole interview for even more information. Also stay tuned for more Mortal Kombat X information from E3 from us in the coming days as we build out our Mortal Kombat X Gamespace.

Kiefer Sutherland is NOT in Mortal Kombat X

After hinting at this previously on Twitter Ed Boon publically confirms that Kiefer Sutherland is not in Mortal Kombat X on the Giant Bomb Live Post E3 show last Thursday evening. Around the 9 minute mark there is a conversation about Kiefer's lack of dialog in Metal Gear Solid and then it turns to Ed who is asked "Is Kiefer Sutherland in Mortal Kombat?" to which he replies: “No he’s not. He actually is not.”

Watch the segment below to hear for yourself, you want to fast forward to the 9 minute mark.

This matches up with what I've heard from many people since the rumor first broke. I still believe he was talking about Call of Duty that he did years ago and he simply said the wrong thing. Surprising that IGN ran this story without any fact checking, as they've been stellar with their news sources as of late.

Karen Strassman also not in Mortal Kombat X

Last issue it was revealed that Karen Strassman, the voice actress for both Kitana and Mileena, had "Mortal Kombat 2" on her resume. It appears, according to a post on Facebook, that she doesn't know anything about this project and may not be involved in Mortal Kombat X afterall. You can read the quote in it's entirey below:

People have been asking me about the upcoming Mortal Kombat -- I haven't as of yet been contacted about this new project, so I'm afraid I don't know anything more about it. Best wishes to all, ~Karen.

So it seems there is a rash of people who really wanted to be involved project, but actually are not at all. Very strange.

Mortal Kombat X on @Midnight

Last Wednesday, Mortal Kombat X also made an appearance on the TV game show @Midnight. It was a question for their segment Rapid Refresh and showed some of the fatalities from the game. Watch the clip of the show below:

You can also click here to watch the episode in full. It's one of the funniest shows on TV right now, so I recommend it highly.

Meaning of D'vorah

Many have asked about the meaning of the new character's names. Not much is known, but it was found out that D'vorah is another spelling of the name Deborah. Both of which actually are the hebrew word for bee. This is something I heard about at E3 but also saw today on Reddit so I figured I'd share because it's interesting.

E3 2014 Day 1: Hands on with Mortal Kombat X

First off the major news came at the Sony PlayStation live event this afternoon. Ed Boon along with PlayStation's Sid Shuman went over another gameplay demo of Mortal Kombat X live on stage. There is a new character unveiled for the first time in this video, so you should watch that first before reading on. Included are first look at both D'Vorah and Sub-Zero's fatalities.

A few hours before that stream happened, the show floor of E3 2014 opened up. As we predicted before, based on prior experience with their previous games, Mortal Kombat X was actually not on the show floor. There is a large public demo theatre with gameplay demos going on. The game is available for the press behind closed doors though. But thanks to the kind staff of Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios they let me go back and get my hands on the game first thing in the morning before the rest of the press showed up for their scheduled demos.

Controls

The first thing I noticed is that the control layout is what you expect from Mortal Kombat (2011), but just a few changes and one major addition. The major addition is a new Run component to the game. Instead of a dedciated button like previous games, now if you hold Block while dashing forward, you will run forward until you let go of block or run out of stamina. The stamina meter is just below the health bar and reduces when you dash, run and use a stage interactibles. This prevents the player from spamming these abilities too much because once it's depleted it takes about two full game seconds to regenerate (at this time).

The throw button has been moved to the L1/LB button, in place of Tag, but can also be used by pressing 1+2 together like before. The R1/RB button is the new stage interactibles button, just like in Injustice. The block button is also still used for enhanced attacks and breaking combos like in MK9.

Despite those minor control changes the game feels pretty close to how Mortal Kombat (2011) did. It's just noticibly faster paced game. If you wanted more Mortal Kombat, this is what you got. It's not Injustice but clearly has learned a few tricks from that game. It's a bit faster than before as well.

The addition of the stage interactibles, which at this point are mostly evades in some cases, really changes the pace of the game. If you get stuck somewhere there may be a way out to create some distance between you and your opponent very quickly. I'll get into the various interactibles in the stages section below.

Graphics

I've been told that the NetherRealm team has re-written the rendering engine from the ground up for this release. It shows. The details in the character textures are something that I've noticed is lost in most streams of the gameplay so far. To get a better feel for that look at the screenshots attached to this story.

The backgrounds also have more detail than I've seen in the previous games. There is dynamic lighting and everything is animated. From characters walking in the background to water waves in the background of another stage effecting ships in the water. There is a lot going on.

As far as the internal body system works for X-Rays and fatalities, now the game's character models can be cut at any angle. This opens up fatalities to have far greater variation across the board compared to Mortal Kombat (2011)'s pre-defined cut points. This change gives the game a far more gruesome feel as you see more and more fatalities.

The fighting animations seem smoother than before too, but hard to tell how much smoother at this point.

Characters

The build at E3 has six players available on the select screen. In addition to Sub-Zero and Scorpion we got Cassie Cage, Kotal Kahn, D'Vorah and Ferra/Torr. Below is a bit on each of the characters. I played as Cassie the most, but the rest I played far less and am looking forward to playing further later this week.

Cassie Cage

Variations: Hollywood, Brawler & Spec Ops

Special Moves: Single Shot, Low Kick, Get Away Flip, Takedown & Power Slam

By only seeing her image along with her name on the selection screen it was immediately apparent who this was. Cassie was the daughter of Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage. She fights with a similar yet different set of moves than her parents. She was clearly trained by them because of these similarities. One major difference is she uses akimbo pistols in her gameplay, something Sonya never did. Her "Spec Ops" variation allows her to call in a precision air strike as well.

Also her X-ray involves her father's signature move quite well I'll say, but I'll save any further details until later.

Kotal Kahn

Variations: Blood God, War God & Sun God

This Aztec looking warrior is pretty brutal. He can fight with a sword based on a variation (I think it was War God). His Sun God variation allows him to place sun beams on the stage that deliver chip damage to the opponent when they walk through it. They stick around for a while too, so could be great to use towards the ends of the match.

D'Vorah

Variations: Brood Mother, Swarm Queen and Venomous

D'Vorah seems to be part insect and controls other insects. The Brood Mother variation allows her to control the worm like insect Krawler seen in the gameplay trailer the other night along with a move called the Bug Blast. The Swarm Queen gives her special moves involving swarms of wasps. The Venomous variation incorporates more moves using D'Vorah's extra insect legs.

Ferra/Torr

Variations: Ruthless, Vicious and Lackey

We learned today that Ferra is the name of the girl in control of the mighty warrior Torr who she rides. Most of their attacks are them working in concert with each other except in the Lackey variation Torr fights without Terra who watches from the sidelines. I believe the Ruthless variation adds some attacks that Ferra can stab Torr to enrage him and boost his damage at the cost of health. I'm not sure what the Vicious variation offers compares to the other two, but you can see the Vicious variation in the PlayStation Live gameplay video above.

Scorpion

Variations: Ninjutsu, Hellfire and Inferno

I only played as Scorpion's Hellfire variations. It added some fire attacks to Scorpion like a fireball and a flame aura that encircles him causing damage to anyone who touches him. I found the addition of another projectile made fights with him great for zoning opponents which is a play style I tend to fall into. The Ninjutsu variation adds dual swords that Scorpion can use in special moves. The final variation Inferno is a demon that can be used in special moves to attack. You can see the Inferno variation in the PlayStation Live gameplay video above.

Sub-Zero

Variations: Cryomancer, Unbreakable and Grand Master

In the Cryomancer variation Sub-Zero can summon ice weapons to use in special moves and combos. You can see the Cryomancer variation in the PlayStation Live gameplay video above.

Stages

Snow Forest

This is the stage shown in the first cinematic trailer. Snow is covering the ground and trees are casting shadows across the environment. This stage has many tree limbs that you can interact with to change your character's position in the arena quicker. There is also a Stage X-Ray on the far left that when used you'll take a tree branch and hit your opponent in the face with it.

Outworld Marketplace

This is an open market with lots of activity in the background. The interactables are baskets you can throw at your opponent. There is even an old lady that you can toss at your opponent, nicknamed Blanche, which sadly she doesn't survive so can't be thrown again later. As far as evades interactibles there is a Tiger and also a merchant tarp that you can use to re-position yourself quickly.

Cove

The cove is a very interesting stage. The battle takes place on a pier over a lake with a large Shao Kahn looking skull shaped rock in the background. The lake is fairly active with waves which causes it move the ships at sail up and down in time with the waves. At times the waves will wash a dead body up to the pier that you can toss at your opponent. You can also use the wooden posts or nearby ships to vault off of to change your position quickly. There is also a large wrecking ball you can use on the right side to swing hard at your opponent, but be careful because it can only be used once.

That's all we got for now, but hope to have more gameplay thoughts and details later this week as well as some interviews with the people behind the game.

"Who's Next?" Answered in Mortal Kombat X Gameplay Footage

Tonight during Sony's E3 2014 Press Conference the world exclusive debut of gameplay footage of Mortal Kombat X we may have gotten part of the answer to the question posed by the game's advertising: "Who's Next?"

NetherRealm Studios's Creative Director Ed Boon had said that two new characters would be shown at E3, and many took that to mean "two not yet revealed."

RT @Y21__ @noobde are we going to see new fighters in the MK X? EB: YES! Two of my new favoriates will be at E3 !!
— Ed Boon (@noobde) June 3, 2014

But it's clear now that Ed actually meant two completely new characters. Actually there was three new characters in the gameplay trailer shown, but we'll get to that later. Take a look at the video of the gameplay debut below:

So who are these characters you may ask? These characters are so new, that we don't know their names yet. Here's a shot of the characters and a bit about what we can learn about them from the trailer.

D'Vorah

The first new character we meet seems to be able to control bugs. She's seen with a few flying insects around her after she flies into the arena. She also strokes a big fat caterpillar in her hand as she taunts her opponent. She has some horns on her arms and later in gameplay video is shown with a second set of long insect like arms.

Later a Fatality of hers is shown where she commands an army of flying bugs to eat the face off of Sub-Zero.

Ferra/Torr

The other new character is a hooded armored warrior that carrys a small child on their back much like Master Blaster characters from Mad Max. The small child appears to have hooks attached to each hand and can move fairly fast. It appears the attacks are a combination between the two characters who work fairly well together.

We don't see how their fatality ends, but it starts by the child stabbing Scorpion in the head with the claws. Then he flips around to the back of Scorpion with the claws still embedded. That's when the scene is cut off.

Kotal Kahn

The Aztec looking warrior is only seen in the Fatality montage at the end. His body features glowing neon colored tattoos along with a feather headress. He's seen drinking the blood of Scorpion's still beating heart after ripping it from his body.

I have a feeling these will not be the last new characters introduced into the series. So I am left asking again, Who's Next?

E3 2014 starts tomorrow at Noon Pacific. We'll be heading over to check out the game and likely doing some interviews with the makers of the game this week. So be sure to head over to our Questions News thread with your questions and we'll try to get the best ones answered. Check back later that day for updates and be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for live updates from the show floor!
GameStop Mortal Kombat X Pre-Order Bonus Poster Available

Hot on the heels of yesterday's announcement of Mortal Kombat X, GameStop has made it official that they are offering the previously-leaked "Who's Next" broken spine poster for pre-ordering Mortal Kombat X.

The poster was leaked last week when a GameStop employee posted a photo to Reddit and later deleted the comment. Below is a direct image of the poster that GameStop has released. You can either pre-order online or in-store. If you do choose to pre-order online, you will need to bring a printed page of your pre-order confirmation to your local store in order to pick up your poster. Also, check with your store first to see if they have any posters remaining.

While no other retailer has made any pre-order bonuses known, it is early in the game and one would expect the retailers on the official MK website to offer something when it gets closer to the release date. Keep it tuned for any updates on Mortal Kombat X on TRMK.

Taking Questions For Our Coverage of MKX at E3 2014

For the past 16 years TRMK has always tried to attend E3 to bring our readers the details on the yet to be released games from the Mortal Kombat series first hand. This year is no exception, as we will be there to check out Mortal Kombat X first hand for you readers once again.

There are already banners up around downtown Los Angeles and inside the LA Convention Center advertising the game.

We haven't seen what WB's booth looks like yet. But going by history we can draw a few assumptions. The last two NetherRealm games have been presented at E3 in a demo theatre for the public all week long. After a short wait in line you'll get to see one of the game's producers or designers walks you through the game. They were even giving out the red X-Ray shirts during this. The games are also only typically playable for media at the show as well, so hopefully like years past we'll be able to check it out.

We're also gearing up to be able to do a few interviews with the people behind the game. So submit your questions to us in the comments below, and we'll take the best questions and try to get them answered.

E3 2014 starts on Tuesday at Noon Pacific! Check back later that day for updates and be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for live updates from the show floor! We also advise following along with Sony and Microsofts E3 2014 Press Conferences on Monday, as you'll never know where the game will show up!

MKX: Next-Gen and Current Gen, Persistent Online, Gameplay at E3, Website Launched

The wait is over. Mortal Kombat X, the heavily anticipated sequel to 2011's Mortal Kombat game, has finally been announced earlier this morning by Ed Boon. Warner Bros. has now sent out a Press Release for the game which confirms the game will be shown for the first time at next week's E3 2014 in Los Angeles, California.

TRMK will be in Los Angeles to check it out first hand! Check back next week for updates and information on the tenth installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise! Be sure to send us any questions you have too, so we can try to get them answered by the developers from NetherRealm on hand. As aways we always recommend tuning into the big three platform's Press Conferences as well incase the game is featured there, but you can count out Nintendo who's Wii U platform was not listed as an option for the game at this time. Check out IGN's Guide on the 2014 Press Conferences for dates and stream links.

Warner Bros. also confirmed the Amazon leaks that the game is being developed for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Next-Generation consoles by NetherRealm Studios. Additionally if you don't have one of the new consoles the game will also be ported to Windows PC as well as previous generation consoles Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game will arrive in 2015, and I'd anticipate a more specific release date sometime early next year.

Along with the announcement press release was the teaser trailer of the game that was released earlier, which you can see below:

The Mortal Kombat X website has also been launched at MortalKombat.com. It features some new high resolution character artwork not seen in the trailer. Here's a screen capture of the website below, as the site is having problems this morning.

Also featured on the site is a nice rundown of the "objective" of the game and it's Next Generation focus and a new online mode that is "fully-connected" and "persistent". Plus you can choose from various fighting styles again? Can't wait to hear more at E3!
Ed Boon releases "Mortal Kombat X" announcement trailer. Game coming 2015.

Co-creator and Creative Director Ed Boon just tweeted the announcement that the next game's title is Mortal Kombat X.

The name of the game is "Mortal Kombat X"
— Ed Boon (@noobde) June 2, 2014

If we go along with yesterday's Amazon leak it would imply that the game will be available on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Windows PC. But we've not yet received a press release confirming this.

And as promised, Ed had more. Here's the Announcement Trailer, which includes an original song "Can't Be Stopped" by Wiz_Khalifa and reveal's the game's release date of 2015.

This isn't gameplay yet, but it looks fairly close to in-engine graphics so it may give you a good idea what is in store. It's also possible it's teasing usable weapons in the stage, hopefully they take the old game's weapon systems with some Injustice style refinements.

There are many questions that remain.

1. Is the "X" pronounced as "Ten" or "Ecks"? I'm going with "Ecks" since it'd be silly to call this "Mortal Kombat Ten" after the last game was simply "Mortal Kombat". Confirmed via Twitter, it's "Ecks".

2. Why is Sub-Zero not a cyborg? He appears to have some cyborg features though, with the eyes glowing like that. Time will tell, we have a long way until 2015 and a lot of information yet to be revealed.

3. How much of that trailer is in-game assets? It looks glorious and hopefully indicative of what the game looks like but it's all CG and not gameplay at all according to Digital Dimension the company who did the CG work for the trailer.

4. Will there actually be stage intractable weapons? Looks possible, time will tell on how much of that is part of the game.

"Mortal Kombat X" listed by Amazon UK with 2015 Release Date

With only 20 hours left in Ed Boon's countdown it appears that Amazon UK has listed "Mortal Kombat X" on it's store The game is listed to be available for the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC. The game was also given a release date of 2015, which fits NetherRealm's previous games schedules to announce at E3 and then release the following spring.

If "Mortal Kombat X" is actually the shipping title, and not just the code name, then I anticipate that the X in the title is not to be officially pronounced "Ten" but rather the letter "X" and may be tied to the story line of the game. It would be confusing to most people to call the game Ten since the next game would be a sequel to 2011's Mortal Kombat.

Stay tuned because Kombat Kontinues tomorrow at 8am Central Time! Are you ready?

Thanks to @WesleyLPBR for the news tip!

Update: The listings were pulled sometime overnight last night.

[UPDATED] "Who's Next?" Next Mortal Kombat Teaser Images Unveiled

A mysterious poster that is said to be a "Mortal Kombat Teaser" poster has appeared on the internet. It was initially posted to Reddit and soon after showed up on NeoGAF and beyond from there.

The poster is all black and features a broken spine along with a slightly different MK dragon logo. At the bottom of the poster are the words "Who's Next?" in the Mortal Kombat title font.

Keep in mind we have no further information on this at this time, but a now deleted comment on Reddit said it was sent to a GameStop store labeled as simply "Malcolm". A reference to Malcolm X where X = 10 in roman numerals maybe? (Thanks to @subzerosmokerai for digging these details up)

For the next few hours fans arguing over the images legitimacy, especially noting the changed dragon logo as proof it was faked. Then around 4pm CT the Official Mortal Kombat Facebook page and both @NetherRealm & Ed Boon's Twitter profiles were updated with the new revised MK Dragon Logo along with the "Who's Next?" tag line logo.

Get excited fans, feels like a new MK is on the horizon. Luckily we likely don't have long to wait as Ed Boon's "kountdown" ends on Monday.

The NetherReport #2 - Sequel Rumors, E3, Denim Ninjas, Sub-Zero in Crisis, PS4 1.70

Welcome to issue #2 of The NetherReport. It's a bit later than usual, but I've been quite busy the last few months with stuff back on the Earth Realm. We have a few more stories than last month, so many I had to cut them out. Maybe those on the cutting room floor will make it back next issue.

Kitana and Mileena Voice Actress in “Mortal Kombat 2”

Karen Strassman the voice actress for both Kitana and Mileena in Mortal Kombat (2011) now has a supporting role in "Mortal Kombat 2" listed on her video game voice over resume. This happened last time with many actors in Mortal Kombat 9 listing their roles, so it's not surprising. So it's likely there is a new Mortal Kombat in the works, but this doesn't give us much more to go on at this time. I honestly believe her more than I believe Keifer.

Announcing TRMK's E3 2014 Coverage

On that note, we are now announcing that TRMK will be covering E3 2014 from the show floor this year. This is a special one for us as 15 years ago we covered our first E3 in 1999 from the show floor. In 1999 they had both Mortal Kombat Gold and Mortal Kombat Special Forces on display, which really shows how long ago that was.

We don't know what, if anything, will be unveiled from NetherRealm Studios but we're planning on being there incase they do. Typically they've done major game releases every two years. Based on that we're guessing that the next game will be revealed just before E3 in early June along with a E3 booth for demoing the game at the show.

My hope? I hope that NetherRealm Studios reboots their classic game The Grid for next generation consoles. But more than likely it's the next installment in the Mortal Kombat series, but why not do both I say! So stay tuned, we think it's going to be an exciting year!

Mortal Kombat Legacy Season 3?

Good news for the fans of the MK Legacy series, after leaving the series publicly last October Kevin Tancharoen is now discussing coming back for a third digital series.

Scorpion vs Power Rangers

Flippin The Script met Chris Casamassa, who played Scorpion in the Mortal Kombat feature films, to get his take on the White Ranger vs Scorpion. Check out his response below:

Very informative video how Superman connects to Mortal Kombat and the ESRB. Ed Boon then tweeted a map of the flow chart that made the video possible.

MK Arcade Hardware Info

Kommunity arcade hardware expert YourMKArcadeSource has put together a nice detailed series of videos, below, detailing the hardware of each of the Mortal Kombat arcade boards. If you are interested in buying or collecting these, it's a must watch.

Sub-Zero in Crisis

Sub-Zero himself John Turk is on the new NBC drama Crisis which was filmed in Chicago. John plays head secret service agent Hank Clemson starting with Episode 3.

UFC pro fighter Frankie Edgar told TMZ he prefers Mortal Kombat to Street Fighter in this interview on the street.
PS4 Firmware 1.70 Released

Today Firmware update 1.70 was released for the PlayStation 4. It comes with a built in video editing app and HDCP disable option for HDMI capture devices. They also made some Twitch streaming improvements as well. All of these fixes are really handy for those playing Injustice for the PS4 and want to stream their games.

Denim Ninja Cosplay Meme

This denim Mortal Kombat ninja crazy took the internet by storm last week. Many variations were created as people tried to out do one another. I especially like the Raiden one below.

Galloping Ghost Arcade Expansion Kickstarter

Our friends over at the Galloping Ghost Arcade here in Chicagoland are running a Kickstarter to expand their business. If they are successful they could end up being the largest arcade in not just the Midwest, but the world! I recommend backing their project because of all the support they have given the MK Kommunity time and time again.

Another great MK2 arcade hack was released recently. This time a fully playable Jade, Smoke & Noob Saibot were made playable on MAME with some cheat files. Check out the Jade game play through below.

Today the 4th print issue of the comic Injustice Year 2 was released. You can find it at your local comic book store or on the various digital comic stores. I'd tell you how it was, but I forgot to go get my copy at lunch today.

That's it for this issue, hope it was as good for you as it was for me.
Welcome to the first issue of "The NetherReport" a little experiment we at TRMK are trying out.

There are a lot of content pertaining to NetherRealm Studios' games that we share to our Twitter and Facebook pages. But often times this content and/or our thoughts on it doesn't feel big or substantial enough for a post of their own. We will now collect this content along with our commentary in this new format.

It won't be just one person doing the writing either. We'll have others take a stab at various features as well each issue. For instance this first issue features a story about Galloping Ghost Arcade by our own Brian "RIPLIUKANG" Kita.

We're aiming to do one new issue a month, but sometimes more based upon how many stories we've collected. So when things pick up as a new game approaches you'll hopefully see these more often.

Kiefer Sutherland In Next Mortal Kombat?

Recently, IGN reported the following:

While discussing his role as Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Sutherland said, “I did Mortal Kombat, and that's such a huge game, but it’s so not like [Metal Gear Solid 5]."

Every gaming outlet listed this story as "confirmed" because of one simple statement in an interview? Why didn't the interviewer follow up with more questioning?

I don't believe it. If Kiefer was involved in a unannounced project his handler would have had any response referencing said project stricken from the record. Instead I bet he was talking about his substantial role in Call of Duty: World at War and simply confused the two "huge" franchises. So don't be too disappointed if he doesn't show up in whatever NetherRealm Studios is working on next.

Galloping Ghost Arcade Draws Big Names, Big Crowds
Written by Brian "RIPLIUKANG" Kita

It was a great day to be a Mortal Kombat fan, as fans from around Chicagoland descended upon the Galloping Ghost Arcade on January 18th to meet and greet with five former actors of the games. Over 100 people were in attendance, with several more watching the simulcast on the arcade's Twitch channel, wanting to get a chance to shake hands, receive and autograph, and snap a photo with John Parrish (Jax), Phillip Ahn (MK2 Shang Tsung), Daniel Pesina (Johnny Cage, MK 1-2 Ninjas), Rich Divizio (Kano, Quan Chi, Baraka, Kabal), and Tony Marquez (Kung Lao). All the actors were in high spirits throughout the day, renewing friendships with their fellows, some of whom they haven't seen in years.

Tournaments went on throughout the night in MK1, MK2, Ultimate MK 3 and the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot. Professional and casual players alike competed for glory well into the night. GGA fighting game team member Mohammad Mansour (Moe30W) was able to secure victory in the MK2, UMK3, and 2011 MK tournaments, with the original MK compeititon going to attendee Nathan G.

The owner of the Galloping Ghost Arcade, Doc Mack, was 'gracious' to have these guests come out to the arcade, and was happy to see the fans show up in droves in appreciation. As a token of their commitment to their commitment to Mortal Kombat as a whole, Doc presented each of the actors with a plaque recognizing their contributions to the game and to the community it has created.

Below is our YouTube video playlist of the event starting with the awards ceremony and afterwards the tournament streams.

We also uploaded some photos that Brian took at the event to Flickr.

"Ultimate" Mortal Kombat 2 Arcade Hack

An intreped anonymous programmer has been playing around in the Mortal Kombat 2 ROM code and has been working on major gameplay tweaks for the over 20 year old game. Hacking of these arcade games is a lost art that requires a lot of work and time, I should know I made a simple attempt years ago, as well as some 34010 assembly knowledge. I for one thank the mysterious programmer for his/her efforts.

They also had a special early build of the update that debuted at Winter Brawl 2014 and they held a big tournament on it, so check out the footage of the tournament for even more detail. Also check the change log for the Winter Brawl version for more information of the vast changes.

In the video below courtesy of YourMKArcadeSource today you can see some of the latest changes. Changes such as: re-organized select screen layout, new character selection indicator colors, Female characters can be "low blowed" with Cage, always has a red shadow kick, some gameplay tweaks and of course you'll see Cage remove FOUR heads during his Fatality!
Injustice Comic Year Two Issue #1 Now Available In Stores!

Last year's Injustice: Gods Among Us comic was DC Comics' "number one best-selling digital first series" so it's not surprising that the series gets to continues the story with "Year Two" this month. The first year of comics covered stories five years before the events of the game, so I imagine this year will continue working forward in time towards the game's events.

The writer of the first series, Tom Taylor returns for the second year but there is a new artist on board as Bruno Redondo replaces Jheremy Raapack, but Jheremy does do the cover for at least the first issue.

Digital chapters are already available for $0.99 each on Comixology, Apple's iBooks and Amazon Kindle Store. But starting today you can get the print issue #1, which combines the first three chapters, at your local comic and book stores for $3.99. You can get a preview of the first issue on DCComics.com as well.

There is something new available this year as well, there is now what is being called the "DC2 version" which is a new motion comics format by MadeFire.
Zatanna Available Today, Upcoming Balance Patch and Zod Man of Steel Skin [UPDATED]

The sixth DLC character Zatanna is now available on Xbox 360 Marketplace and will be available soon for PlayStation 3. Check out the new Zatanna History Trailer below.

Also of note, that it was announced on last night's NetherRealm stream that there will be no balance patch to go along with Zatanna because it is still in development. I would expect it in another few weeks, once people find all of the issues with Zatanna post-launch.

Also the keen eye of darkgodalex over on Test Your Might noticed that there was a new Zod character file inside of the Zatanna Compatibility Update package. So I decided to take a look myself using Gildor's Unreal Model Viewer. I found a Zod Man of Steel style crest in the UI texture that is used for the player's super meter. Then I looked at the model file itself, and found his Man of Steel skin and a armored model to go along with it.

You can see it all below:

(Updated texture file courtesy of DuBBer Kiir on TYM.)

So unless this file's inclusion was a mistake, it appears we'll be getting a Man of Steel Zod skin for sale sometime soon. I'm guessing that he'll be able to be played along with the aforementioned upcoming balance patch. So stayed tuned for that official render and more info.

Update 8/14: Appears that Knightman2 on GameFAQs posted up a few screenshots of Zod hacked to work on his modded console which I posted one of below.

Knightman2 also says Zod currently has the same match intro and voice, so it's looking bad for a Michael Shannon voice for his character which is likely a cost issue and we instead get the regular Nolan North voice. This could change before release though, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Zatanna Confirmed as Next DLC Character for Injustice

Today it was revealed Zatanna as the next DLC character for Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Check it out below:

Zatanna will be available on August 13 on the Xbox Marketplace for 400 MS Microsoft Points and PlayStation Network with the price of $4.99. Zatanna is not included with the first Season Pass and since we know there will be no second Season Pass it's possible this may be the last DLC character we get for the game as we've yet to see any teases for a seventh or eighth character yet.

Also thanks to our friend Delriach for sending us a copy of the Press Release which we still do not get directly from Warner Bros. You can read the PR in it's entirety below.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today released an all-new trailer revealing Zatanna as the next DLC character that will be available for the DC Comics fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us. Zatanna, the powerful magician known for casting spells by speaking backwards, will be available beginning Aug. 13 on Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for 400 MS Microsoft Points and PlayStation®Network at a price of $4.99.

Developed by award-winning NetherRealm Studios, Injustice: Gods Among Us introduces a new franchise in the fighting game genre and a brand new story created in collaboration between NetherRealm Studios, DC Entertainment and comic book writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti. As the story unfolds, players will experience the power, gadgetry and unparalleled strength of some of the most popular DC Comics heroes and villains, such as Batman, Superman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Aquaman, The Joker and others, as they engage in epic battles in a world where the line between good and evil is blurred.
Mortal Kombat Legacy Season 2 Comic Con 2013 Panel

This past weekend at San Diego Comic Con 2013 there was a Mortal Kombat Legacy panel. At the panel was Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, Legacy series Writer/Director Kevin Tancharoen along with cast members Casper Van Dien (Johnny Cage), Brian Tee (Liu Kang), Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) and Samantha Tjhia (Kitana). The one thing I took away from this was that Casper Van Dien is a perfect fit for Johnny Cage. I can't wait to see the new series debut later this fall.

They discussed in detail the first series and how they took fan feedback in creating the second season. Included in Season 2 is finally show the tournament and even include fatalities for the first time in the series. They even showed a fatality of Kitana's from the series. Sadly it was not recorded, but TheGamerJulie who uploaded the video of the event below had this to say about the fatality clip:

"They did show a clip where Mileena is fighting Johnny Cage and while she has him pinned to a tree with her weapon she tells Kitana to finish him. Kitana says no and goes on to say she won't fight with her anymore. Kitana and Mileena fight. Mileena is winning the fight and while she has Kitana on the ground Cage jumps in and intervenes in the fight? for a second. The second Mileena is distracted Kitana cuts off Mileena's head with her fan!" - TheGamerJulie

One great momement that went viral soon after the panel was Ed Boon doing Scorpion's GET OVER HERE live on stage. This is the first time I've seen this live, and it's amazing how perfectly he does it without editing even over 20 years later.

You can watch the panel courtesy of TheGamerJulie in full below:

It's likely Warner Bros. recorded the panel and will release a better version of it sometime in the future, but until then this version is perfectly watchable.

Injustice Releases Recap: 1.05, Zod, New Skins, Wii U DLC & Evo Surprise

Yesterday was the latest update to Injustice: Gods Among Us, lots of new news and content for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U. Yes, the Wii U finally got an update!

Injustice Patch v1.05

First, the 1.05 Title Update was released for all three consoles, yes even Wii U. This was a major change to the game, most generally finally improving anti-air attacks for everyone and lots of other balance tweaks. You can read the official patch notes, or check out FGCSabin's Visual Patch Notes which are embedded below:

DLC Content: Zod and New Skins

Also released yesterday was the 4th DLC character General Zod, he is now available for $4.99/400 Points on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U. He is of course free if you bought the Injustice Season Pass. Check out his new history story trailer below.

Also released was the Superman Man of Steel Skin for $0.99/80 MS Points as well as the Blackest Night 2 and Earth 2 packs for $3.99/240 MS Points each. The New 52 Skin Pack was also finally made available for purchase as well for those who didn't get it from a pre-order bonus. Check out the new skin images below:

Also Ares new Classic costume is included with the Zod Compatibility Pack on Xbox 360 and included with the v1.05 Patch on PS3, you can check it out below:

Wii U Updates and DLC

So as we mentioend earlier, the Wii U FINALLY got a software update for Wii U. Along with the update, they released all the DLC for the game so far, so all four new characters are now available for purchase. ALSO it seems Warner Bros. have offered some new skin packs that are currently Wii U exclusives.

The Wii U Lockdown Pack is simply just a collection of the Injustice iOS skins packaged together since the Wii U doesn't offer the WBID sync system. It's possible that Warner Bros. may make this skin pack available on the other consoles at a later time. For $3.99 you get the following skins in the Lockdown pack.

Batman Beyond
New 52 Green Lantern
Knightfall Bane
Arkham Harley
Lockdown "Prison" Superman

They also released the formerly Japanese exclusive Ame-Comi skin pack, which includes new manga-influenced skins for Wonderwoman, Catwoman and Harley Quinn. Ame-Comi was a line of figurines in Japan and later a series of comics as well. Here's a look at the Ame-Comi skins in action:

Ed Boon EVO Surprise Tease

Also just now, Ed Boon posted a tease to Twitter about an Injustice surprise to be announced at EVO 2013.

Injustice Surprise @ EVO ?
#GetHype
— Ed Boon (@noobde) July 3, 2013

Wonder what that could be, any guesses out there?

9.95 Phil's #FightingForACause Charity Stream is This Weekend!

This weekend from Saturday June 22 at 8am EST until 8am EST on Sunday June 23 9.95 Phil will be running his annual 24 hour charity stream on the Kombat Network channel on Twitch TV. They'll be playing lots of games, not just fighting games, and will be featuring guest spots by many members of the community. You'll even be able to donate to charity to play some of the guests! All money raised goes to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and The Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Here's the event details in full below:

Why do we fight?

Some of us fight for fun. Some for competition. Some to settle scores.

As gamers...as fighters...we carry a stigma that we are rooted in violence...that what we love to do...to fight...breeds violence.

Its time to destroy that stigma.

For 24 hours, on June 22nd 8am EST to June 23rd 8am EST we will drop the beef, the drama, and the politics. We will stand together and do what we love to do...we will fight...to raise money for charity.

We will be #FightingForACause

Join us on the KombatNetwork stream as we talk, play games (fighting and non-fighting) as we support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and Families of SMA(Spinal Muscular Atrophy) for a full 24 hours.

Viewers are welcome to support with monetary donations which can be made directly to the organization. Donation pages will be created for the event with links that will be promoted throughout the broadcast, as well as donating directly to the KombatNetwork paypal which will be made available for gift donations to be distributed to the charities following the stream.

Our successful formula is based heavily on our Donation Matches. This gives our viewers the ability to play donation matches against the players who are at the stream in an online match in the game of their choice. Usually, MK9, Injustice, MK1/2/3, but we always let people play the games they want to play against the players that are there.

The pricing structure for donation matches:

Best 2 out of 3:$5
First to 5: $10
First to 10: $20

We accommodate both systems as best we can. MK9, Injustice and the classic MK games are all ready and available on PS3 and 360. AE is available on both systems as well.

Hosted by 995Phil, along with Co-hosts REO and Tom Brady, with special guests to appear as well.

We are expecting:

CDJr - accepting donation match challenges
JamessMK - will be accepting donation match challenges in MK1/2 and possibly UMK3
SweetJohnnyCage - will be doing a special Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past speed run for us(6pm Saturday)
LI Joe(waiting on confirmation)
Claude VonStroke
Insuperable
Dark Rob
Redrum26

and possibly more!

And as always, Mrs. 9.95 will be providing the players and hosts with homemade baked goods!

Come and join us... http://twitch.tv/kombatnetwork on June 22nd 8am EST to June 23rd 8am EST... watch, support and donate. Be a part of showing that when we fight we are #FightingForACause!
