3:31 PM CST -
NetherRealm Studios's creative director Ed Boon just teased on Twitter to keep an eye out for "Unexpected surprise" from NetherRealm Studios. He initially posted a message just a "Surprise from NetherRealm studio coming...?" but later deleted that and rephrased it to stress the word "Unexpected". See the quote below:

"Let me rephrase that: Unexpected surprise from NetherRealm Studios coming.......?" - @noobde

What do you think it is? Leave us a comment on this story what you think it is. Then we can tell later if the surprise is really as "Unexpected" as Ed said it will be.

Updated: Ed Boon later Tweeted that they have three surprises brewing. Only time will tell on what these end up being.

MK10 OR MK: Fire and Ice.

I was gonna say MK9 DLC but.. I remember that Ed denied a new mk and before that there were rumours of a movie lined up and also a new mk. He said no to the game but the movie thing turned out to be true a few days after so I'll just say MK 10 EDIT: noobde noobde RT @therealdavidwoo @noobde more DLC characters? Noobde: Oh man that would be kool! But no.

Well it's not MK Mythologies HD or new DLC or some sort of "Ultimate" MK9 (and thank goodness for all 3) MK movie and/or game announcement is what I'm going with. I know the movie has already been announced sort of but maybe a bit of concrete news could be the "surprise". Thats what I am going with - even though even a game/movie revelation seems farfetched...or does it?

Unexpected... Hmmm... Here's my top three: - Sequel to The Grid - John Tobias joins NRS - Sequel to Shaolin Monks (or a game with that type of action-adventure.)

I don't know but it's killing me to find out!! I just don't think it's going to be anything DLC or MK9 related.

Since it's has nothing to do with the Grid or MK9, I still say that it has to do with either MK10 or a Shaloin Monks sequel. Plus Carlos Pesina has been Tweeting for the last month that he's been doing more mocap. Sounds like a new game to me. MAYBE EVEN ANOTHER BLITZ GAME!!!!

Shaolin Monks sequel or other MK free roaming sandbox action game co-developed by Rocksteady with mocap from Carlos Pesina and graphicsetc. pitched in by NRS. Ed Boon did recently say they are like this *crosses fingers* with Rocksteady after all and I read they had a hand in Batman Arkham City as well.

Actually, there will be a new Blitz game coming soon. Unfortunately, NRS and WB will have nothing to do with this one. Turns out not every Midway property ended up in the hands of WB. Like the NBA Jam franchise, the Blitz franchise is now property of EA...the same company that got their hands on the exclusive NFL license in the wake of the Madden/NFL 2k sales war.

Its going to be something completely lame. Ed Boon promised a worthy reward for completing the challenge tower. Reality: A 3rd barely-there outfit for Mileena. Really, guy? Ed Boon promised a unique online experience for the new MK. Reality: A buggy and broken online experience that took far too long to sort out and fix. Ed Boon promised a game that was true to the roots, and pure MK. Reality: Freddy Krueger. Ed Boon promised an Arcade Kollection that would give us the MK games we all loved, remembered and wanted. Reality: we got a p.o.s. package with no option for screen adjustment, and emulations that looked like a SNES/Genesis port. Not to mention that the UMK3 in the Kollection looked like a burning bag of crap, compared to the stand-alone DLC release years before the Kollection. Seriously, does anyone actually believe that Ed Boon has any credibility whatsoever with his various statements, teases and promises? And F.Y.I., a new Blitz is already in the works.
November 17th, 2011 8:14 PM CST - linkueininja
I wonder if its MKSM2 you can play all of the characters instead of using a replay disc, and new/old arenas.
November 17th, 2011 8:17 PM CST - smoke.tetsu
The MKAK didn't look as bad as the SNESGenesis ports but wasn't perfect no. Especially not as bad as the genesis ports where they had to reduce the colors to 64 colors.... and most of the SNES ports they shrank the sprites and drew over them. They didn't do that in the MKAK. Also they downsampled the sound effects in the 16-bit ports and used console specific MIDI songs rather than the original songs. But hey don't let my facts inconvenience your vitriol towards the MKAK.
November 17th, 2011 8:18 PM CST - Kurtis Stryker
If I have to personally adjust my own television's screen display settings for a game to fill the screen in the year 2011 on a current generation console, then there's a huge problem. UMK3 allowed for that, and it looks phenomenal. No excuse whatsoever as to why the Kollection couldn't provide that option.
November 17th, 2011 8:20 PM CST - Tarkatan Trash
MKSM has absolutely no business even being acknowledged! Not a damn letter in that game was canon, and the development team STILL had the audacity to recognize the game as such! To hell with all future versions of that game!

Just because it doesn't let you stretch it to the width of your screen doesn't make it as bad as the 16-bit versions. Like I said it's not perfect I even bolded and underlined that so you don't miss it. But you did anyway thinking I said there's nothing wrong with the MKAK which I never said. Personal preferences aside unstretched is the proper way to see it anyway.

A new actionadventure MK game doesn't necessarily have to be a direct sequel to that game... especially if Rocksteady is involved.

KI3 would be unexpected but I doubt NRS would have anything to do with that series. Furthermore even an MK vs KI would be a good fit in my opinion but I doubt it's that either. Ed Boon said something to the effect of the rights being tangled up between Rare and Nintendo which are the only ones around out of the three who had a hand in releasing it at the arcade (since Midway is gone). I'm guessing Rare has the rights to it now but that would mean Xbox exclusivity if they where to bring it back I think.. provided they can get it past Nintendo. I'm just guessing.
November 17th, 2011 9:01 PM CST - craftycheese
Patch for the arcade collection and/or the pc version of it. That makes the most sense to me.
November 17th, 2011 9:03 PM CST - battle_scarz13
It wouldn't be anything to do with the movie. Warner bros. would announce anything pertaining to that. NRS is a game studio they wouldn't announce movies. My top 3 guesses are. 1.) MK10 in 2012 to celebrate MK's 20th Anniversary. 2.) MK: Vitality coming at the PS:Vita launch. 3.) MK: Fire & Ice Hopefully its the third. That would be awesome. Some of the NRS guys worked on Arkham City, maybe they took some valuable lessons on designing a 3rd person action game away from that. And Scorpion and Sub-Zero's endings hint at their team up. But we will see. I wouldn't count out more DLC though. Boon has denied things before.
November 17th, 2011 9:03 PM CST - smoke.tetsu
I think those (the patch or PC version of MKAK) are expected though. Not sure whether I'd qualify Vitality or Fire and Ice as expected or not though. I'd qualify the PC version of MK9 as unexpected since everyone thinks it's not coming. But if "No sir" means what it implies rather than something else like "No sir that's not all you need to know" or "No sir you don't need to know" then it probably isn't that. Unless they name it something else like UMK like I said. :P But yeah Ed Boon has said some deliberately misleading and or vague hints or just things to stir up interesttalk in the past so we'll have to see either way.

It may even be unrelated to MK. Or even the fighting genre. That would be the most unexpected thing. I'm just not buying in to the hype yet, because I really don't want to be let down.

With an EA logo on it, though (BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Anyone want to think of a world where EA owned the rights to the MK franchise? I sure as hell don't! When Midway owned the franchise, Blitz not only allowed, but also encouraged, the following:
  • Pass interference
  • Late hits (my favorite feature in the franchise)
  • Showboating
  • Excessive celebration

Canon or not, MKSM had a BIG following and sold very well. And most importantly of all: It was a FUN game.

This was actually my next point. Who ever said that it HAD to be a DIRECT sequel of MKSM. FIRE AND ICE could be a game that takes place right when Sub-Zero kills Scorpion (pre MK1), and ends up with them teaming up to take out a common enemy (Quan Chi), which IS cannon to the storyline. Don't be so quick to compare Midway to NRS. Remember WB has the final say in these type of things now, whereas back in the day Midway always did rushed projects. Hence, the crap-tastic Armageddon and MKvsDC. NRS took all the time that they needed to make an AWESOME MK9 game, which is something they couldn't do before, because Midway had limited resources. I don't doubt that with the funding from WB, and enough time on their hands, that NRS could make a GREAT actionadventure game. Besides, with NRS NOT working on anything new for MK9 and Carlos Pesina doing NEW mocap, it could only mean 1 of 3 things: (a) They're working on MK10, (b) They're working on an action adventure MK game, (c) They're working on a NEW game that's NOT related to MK.

- an MK Strategy Game like Age of Mythology (chances 0.01%) - MK Mythologies with Sub-Zero & Scorpion (something like Batman Arkham City) - a new game from Netherrealm Studios, nothing to do with MK - MK 10 announcing - an MK character as DLC in another game We know that it has nothing to do with MK9, nothing to do with the upcoming movie, Pesina is doing some mocap, world ends 2012, MK for Vita is not "unexpected", ... what else...

KI = exclusive property of Microsoft Seriously...how many times do I have to point out that NRS and WB own NOTHING related to the Blitz and KI franchises?
November 18th, 2011 1:50 PM CST - battle_scarz13
I agree with the above. And its completely right. Rare is owned by Microsoft. So unless Rare or Microsoft sell the rights to the KI IP NRS can't go anywhere near it. Unless there is a deal brokered between WB and Microsoft for an MK/KI style crossover game. And a lot of people are speculating that because of the resurgence of MK and MVC3 and all these fighting games, that Rare are actually working on KI3 for the X-Box 720's launch. That's pure speculation though. I think NRS are going to announce a new IP or that they are working on an existing IP they have acquired the rights for. I seriously believe it will be absolutely unrelated to MK.
November 18th, 2011 2:10 PM CST - C-Sword
I doubt Rare is working on KI3 for the 720, the team who worked on the first 2 games left the company, they'll probably release KI1 on XBAL to see how well it does first. It's still possible for NRS to make a crossover fighting game involving KI, but they'll have to work something out with Rare.

I doubt it. Midway's role in the KI series was minor. I don't remember if they built the arcade cabs and/or hardware for the KI games, or if they co-published the game along with Nintendo. Whatever the case is, I do know that they had nothing to do with the console versions.

As far as I can tell they built the cabinets. The ones they sent to the arcades where basically the same standard ones they put MK (and other games) into except with street fighter style six button layout panels and "Ultra 64" hardware inside although it wasn't the exact same hardware that ended up being shipped as the Nintendo 64 it was more powerful and had a hard drive allowing a bigger game. If anything it was a joint effort with hardware provided by nintendo (it had a 100Mhz R4600 CPU... the N64 had a 93Mhz R4300i), customized and put together by midway (it used their DCS sound system like MK2 and later had).. stuck in their own cabinet and software by Rare. Midway's role it seems was to facilitatepublish the arcade release. Hell, midway probably developed the hardware with some prototype specs from nintendo and included some stuff they where getting into at the time like hard drives in arcade machines which they ended up using in other machines of the time and of course stuff they where already using (DCS). The home version which ended up being on the SNES and Gameboy and was quite scaled down from the arcade was purely by Rare and published by Nintendo AFAIK.

While it's true that Microsoft owns Rare and its IPs, I have reason to believe that Nintendo also has a copyright claim to the original KI games (they were listed as a copyright holder in the original arcade games). I know for a fact that Rare games that do not have Nintendo-owned characters (such as Perfect Dark) have been re-released on XBLA, which leads me to believe that KI's characters may be owned by Nintendo; if that's the case, then it explains why KI 1&2 have not been re-released on XBLA. I know that Rare sent the DKC IPs to Nintendo after they got bought out by Microsoft, since Nintendo created Donkey Kong before Rare was even established.
November 18th, 2011 9:58 PM CST - smoke.tetsu
Yeah that's what I said earlierelsewhere... I saw a tweet by Boon a while back (not sure how long) that indicated some kid of limbo due to the trifecta of companies that had a hand in it at the arcade. At the time Rare was closely working with Nintendo and even made Donkey Kong Country for them. Nintendo had a 49% stake in Rare at that time. In fact I had a promotional video from Nintendo which was all about DKC yet showed a sneak peak of KI (arcade version of course) at the end. The arcade machines where manufactured by Midway but where licensed by and had nintendo logos on them. It always seemed to me that Nintendo was heavily involved in KI treating it like a first party title. So I wouldn't put it past them to own the copyrights to the characters. Additionally the SNES version of KI had a "only for nintendo" label on the box. Looking at the internet it appears they keep on saying they are interested in it but it could be true that Nintendo has a stake in it and doesn't want to let them even rerelease it much less make a new game since they are now a Microsoft subsidiary. Although if they really wanted I'm sure Microsoft could buy the rights... I think they have enough money. But then again Nintendo may not want to sell the rights and are being a stick in the mud about it. You know what would be great though but probably not possible anytime soon? A KI HD remix.... imagine all those SGI sprites and FMV background rerendered in HD! The way the camera zooms in and out also would lend well to widescreen as well since in the original game the characters could be any distance from each other and that wouldn't change with widescreen.
November 18th, 2011 11:09 PM CST - Tarkatan Trash
There's another issue involved in re-releasing the KI games; does Microsoft have the legal power to block Nintendo from re-releasing the same KI games on Virtual Console? If you ask me, I think that would depend on whether they are the arcade versions or the console versions. Since the console versions were exclusively on Nintendo consoles, I doubt there would be much MS could do to block those versions of KI from Virtual Console. I do know that Rare can still make games for Nintendo's handhelds, since Microsoft has no participation in the handheld market.

True. So, in reality, "unexpected" means something that I want or something that I'll like. But since it's already been stated that additional DLC for MK is not happening (even in the form of an "Ultimate Mortal Kombat"), the announcement will be something expected: something that I don't want or something that I won't like.

I thought MK vs DC looked good on paper, but the fact that the game aimed for the T-rating (a first for the MK franchise) due to licensing issues ended up watering down the end result. The fact of the matter is, toned-down violence was virtually uncharted territory for MK (with the exception of the SNES port of MK1, and that was completely out of Midway's control), and let's be real here; MK fans don't like to see their product toned down. Turns out this was the last game ever released by Midway, who was already in a bad financial situation to begin with (they had been operating at annual net losses since 2000). As for Freddy Krueger? Don't you dare make me bring up that Dokken music video he was in; I've posted it in several threads already!

the real failure lied in the games crappy competitive 1v1 mechanics.

I didn't care too much for MK VS DC, it had nothing to do with the super heroes and violence being toned down, the gameplay just felt rushed and noobish. I also couldn't take the game seriously, because of silly features like Free Fall and Klose Kombat. I wouldn't mind them giving that crossover one more try, it has to have the same gameplay as MK9, I'd rather have MK10 and MK VS KI tho.
November 19th, 2011 12:39 PM CST - xamoel
Maybe Scorpion gonna appears in the new smash bros title.. Maybe netherealm, is gonna make "DC vs Marvel" with the mk9 fisics, and mechanic gameplay. Or maybe a kind of "terrordrome"
November 19th, 2011 9:02 PM CST - Ty Yakiwchuk
I dont think it has anything to do with MK9. There's not a chance in the world they would already be making MK10. MK9 JUST came out. It could either be something to do with the new movie, or not MK at all. Or if it is MK related, it will be a SUPER disappointment. Remember when NRS hinted at an AMAZING challenge tower reward. It was the dumbest award for wasting half your life ive ever seen. If its a patch for the arcade kollection that would be retarded. "Unexpected".... hmm... maybe MK PINBALL FX2 TABLE for 360 Arcade... you all know Boon's pinball history... both Zen Studios and Ed Boon follow each other on twitter and both use the "Unreal" engine. or whatever Unreal is... all I know is they know each other on a personal level and Zen made a Street Fighter 2 table. My guess is a Pinball table... that would be SIIIIICCCCCKKKKK!!!!!!

You boob. MK9 is MK vs DC with polished graphics custom combos, more gore and no option to side step. Crossovers are not meant to be taken serious. There meant to be fun. lol... That's like saying You boob Super smash brothers Melee is brawl... just with manual-lcancels, Wavedashing, wavelanding, platform cancelling, lightshielding, powershielding. The fact you had to make a list of the differences proves it's not the same game. Not even close. MK9 is suriving competitively... MKvsDC... That game had almost NO competitive spotlight, and it's for good reasons. Mk9 has MORE than what you mentioned. But I don't want to write a essay just to explain the differences.

I've read on Kotaku that Warner Bros. have a game based on a DC Comics Superhero coming out in 2012. No way will MK9 be the last game of the series, it sold 3 million units and it's one of the best fighting games to be released this year. NRS and WB want to make money. There's supposed to be a MK game for the PS Vita, but no official announcement has been made yet, I know Boon said an ''unexpected'' surprise, but don't believe everything he says on Twitter, he's known for trolling. Like Shajita said, it could be MKVSDC2, they'll probably re-use the programming of MK9. Hopefully, they make the announcement soon, cause this thread is going to turn into another wishlist from fans.

So it isn't MK vs DC 2. It isn't MK10 but it's still MK-related, so it isn't a new IP. And it ain't MK9 DLC-related or UMK9. So the suprises have gotta be a MK action-adventure game, something related to MK Vita and/or a MK character being DLC for Batman: Arkham City.

Since Ed Boon said it's not MK10, MKvsDC2, Ultimate MK9 or MK9 DLC, I'm thinking that it's an action adventure game. Also, Noob+Saibot's post about the position that just opened up at NRS looking for someone who can do action games, leads me to believe that it's gonna be an action game.
