The return of the dead hero characters

Just making this thread here to discuss it as an overall topic rather than filling up every single thread with it.

I am talking about the heroes who died in MK9. So far we have Kung Lao and Kitana returning. That's 2 characters in the roster so far. I'm going to keep Sub-Zero out of this, as we don't know which Sub-Zero it actually is.

Personally, I am quite content with just having Kung Lao and Kitana returning from the dead. In my opinion, the rest may stay dead, however, I wouldn't mind if Jade and Smoke returned as well, but I can fully understand if they didn't.

What are your thoughts and opinions on the matter?
Any of the other dead hero characters you'd like to see return?

It was fairly obvious they'd all return at some point, and I do love the new designs. I just wish they had waited for MK 11, or something. It's just too soon.

Well, I didn't want any of them to come back, but the Kraken was unleashed on New Year's Eve, so I don't care any more. Not surprised about Kitana. Won't be surprised about Jax and Liu Kang. And good for the fans of those characters. I now want Kabal; I was willing to see him off, but there's precedent for playable KIAs, so I'm actively campaigning for him now. GIMME KABAL, pls NRS.

Having them missing for at least one game would have been nice had the game been a regular sequel, as in the events right after Mortal Kombat (2011), but seeing how the story is gonna cover 25 years, it makes sense to have these legacy characters back a coupleof years after they died. I am not against it.

Liu Kang could come back, and I have small inkling Smoke could come back. But Jade is not really in the same league, so I dont think she or any other dead character will come back.

I didn't have alot of faith in NRS actually leaving the dead characters dead ever since watching the MK:Deception intro (Shang Tsung died and came back in seconds. Raiden died twice in a row and still came back in minutes both times). Even though I stressed hard on how they wouldn't do it, I really only had 25% of faith in that claim.

Anyone think that they will break free out of Quan Chi's control early on in the game? Maybe Raiden will find Ermac and Ermac will help out. Ermac did help Liu Kang out in MKD on getting Kitana and the others who died in MKDA back to life at the end of MKD.

Dude, IMO this is the only and best explanation for this.

Just after MK9, Shinnok may come with hell (literally) and Quan Chi is going to subdue his foes with his revenants.

Then, "good guys" win, they free their souls, resurrected somehow (maybe Elder Gods, totally MAYBE).

Then, some will be of big help on the new threats, possibly involving Outworld and another threat to the realms (the "demon").

I don't get the complaints. It's as if people do not have an understanding of a fighting game series. You have the characters people identify with and main, to take them out takes part of what makes the game great. Tekken manages to keep a majority of the fan favorites and add new characters why can't MK. The story really is an added bonus. Plus they have realms that drift in and out of each other, such as the Netherrealm, which as far as i can understand is the equivalent to the afterlife in MK and several magicians and a necromancer as characters. Even one of the main characters has and always has been a undead characters

If you take certain characters out of a game it usually makes the game lacklustre and history proves this. 3RD strike is the only exception I can think of but that came out in a different time and it wasn't effectively a nostalgia franchise back then. People like the nostalgia, people attach themselves to certain characters and certain characters need to be in the games. You take them out totally it removes part of the game.

There will be returning characters but I would not replace Kitana with Havik in a game when there's opportunity to put both in, just for the sake of a fantasy storyline. It's not a TV show, its not a film, games don't follow those continuity rules. You can't win, folk will be unhappy if fan favorites return or complain the new characters suck. Bringing back a majority of the MK4-Deception is undoable IMO, the majority don't remember or care about them not to mention boring, cold and terrible designs.

Actually, Street Fighter 3/3rd Strike were really not well recieved when they came out, exactly because Capcom had replaced almost the entire roster with new characters. It became popular over time though, as the more pro-players saw the potential in the gameplay.

I just mentioned this in another thread before i saw this one.

-Kung Lao & Kitana aren't a bad thing, yes i was/am surprised so im am currently still on the fence with processing this. All i can really say from this point on, is that if theyre going to be bringing back characters that CLEARLY died in the MK9 Story Mode... I hope the Comics or Story Mode explain their Resurrection and not in a "well we just wanted them back soo...kind a way"

- Im hoping it involves the Netherrealm War somehow

-I would have like to have seen Reiko or Tanya be revealed in this recent trailer. It would have had a Old but New yet satisfying vibe to it for me i believe.

Mortal Kombat is more story driven then most fighting games out there. What happens in the story is important in Mortal Kombat. Gameplay is important is well but it's good to have both.

More storydriven than other games, yes, but the story was never the main focus, but rather a tool to explain why they are all fighting eachother. They do a great job doing that though, unlike say Virtua Fighter which has little to no story other than "Tournament held by evil corporation to test their newest human weapon Dural."... and that's about it, really. :/

Yeah, 3rd strike never did well over here in the UK till the sheep cottoned on. We have such a shitty hipster community in the UK. America wins cash prizes, we win a set of SF4 playing cards. But yeah, this backs up my point of why dead characters need to come back. It's not really hard to envision ways they can come back without ruining the story either. Remove the foundations out, the house will fall.

Kung Lao is actually his cousin Kung Jin, who took over the hat. Kitana is actually Mileena posing as Kitana to gain allies to take Outworld.

(Just joking, but let's wait for the story to come up with an explanation)

Would be a good twist to the story. But yeah lets wait and find out, but i bet you might be on to something!

i want sindel to return

shes my favourate character and her move set is super original and creative id love to see them expand on what she can do with her scream and hair with the variations. i feel theres so much untapped potential with that character.
and when it comes to raising the dead with sindel its not so hard to swallow

not including her would be such a waste of a character with such a unique move set and theres already people that think theres not enough female characters in the game and worried if they do add new female characters they might suck or lack interesting original moves. so sindel is a safe bet to get a great character with great interesting moves and they could really push the envelope with her.

I ORIGINALLY wanted all of the dead characters to stay dead. But I would love to trade an alive Kitana for an alive Jade. :)

Unfortunately this is very true. I knew they would never be able to keep Kitana dead. After all, It's Kitana. Lol.
I was telling my brother 3 months back that Kitana would be back at some point before game release. I didn't expect Kung Lao though. That was a surprise.

As I posted 2 years ago in the MK2011 thread, I was really hoping for a complete start-over with a game FULL of new characters. I got 50% of what I was praying for. I'm not complaining that the dead characters are coming back, but I really had wished they stayed dead honestly. That's what I view this as.

Well, the comic's revealed that
Spoiler:
Jax is also alive again.

Spoiler:
PLEASE. NO. DAMN IT. He's who I wanted to STAY dead the most.
How many more heels we need to shove in his throat? Sigh.

We don't know how the dead characters come back. The comic mention the NR invasion happen and ended. I think the dead characters come back to life after the invasion.
