The Player's Help Guide

In the two and a half months that I've been on this forum, I've noticed an increasing trend among newer players who insist on quitting because they feel either too overwhelmed by the fighting mechanics, they do not properly know how to deflect/counter spam, or they are simply tired of the online community, i.e. cyber bullies or the constant lag.

Whatever issues you have, however, I implore you; before you go off creating threads (that will eventually end up being locked anyways) about your constant qualms with the game, your hatred for NRS, or the fact that you're quitting because you're tired of -insert reason here-. come to this thread first.

If I have to do it by myself, or with the help from fellow players in this community, I want to take the time to help all the newbies or people who just have a general lack of understanding of the game, lack of focus or concentration, or the inability to control their anxiety online.

What I mean by 'online anxiety' is that I've recently been doing an independent study on the anxiety most gamers have when playing online, which leads to a lot of losses on their record, nervousness before or during match ups, or possible rage issues after losing. Whatever your poison, I again ask that before you create your rant threads, come here and ask for advice/help first.

People who come seeking help will get more positive feedback than those who come and merely whine and complain about their constant woes with MK. We all have them, we all must deal with them. But first, ask questions and get the right answers. Get constructive, honest feedback, then we'll see if you still want to leave. :D

You are so innovative on this forum its crazy. Ive been having problems too let me ask a question, how do get rid of that nervousness before a match? The feeling always comes back no matter how good or bad your record is.

A lot of people get nervous before a match, it's natural. I can't say the same for the most confident of players, but don't be fooled, even they feel the pressure. Whether it's tournaments or simple online play against friends or random people, the pressure is always felt, and that's what makes a lot of people nervous. This can stem from any number of things.

I personaly have the mid-match jitters. It's hard for me to predict what people are going to do all the time, so a lot of times I would choke mid-combo and 'drop the ball' so to speak. Suddenly, my combos are flowing as they should, I'm making tons of rookie mistakes, and eventually I'm being punished for every little mistake I make. Again, this is all normal, so don't condem yourself for feeling nervous because it's natural. (Not saying you do, just in general.)

My advice: Do a lot of pre-warm up matches. I've noticed that my first 2-3 games are always rusty, but once I start getting into the flow of things I start building confidence, and then I start dominating. It's also good to watch out for too much confidence because that leads to arrogance, and then you start losing because you become to over-confident. If you have friends online, play a few rounds against them because they are the least likely to judge you. Then move to ranked matches or KOTH. Get to a point where you feel comfortable with what you're doing and how you're playing, and those jitters/nervousness should go away.

Are you talking about combos? If so, it's all about set-up and predictability. Scorpion has a lot of anti-zoning tools under his belt, but because he is such a popular character it is also his curse; everyone knows what to expect from him, so the Scorpion vs. match ups become a lot easier. In general, when fighting a Scorpion player you want to watch out for these key things;

- Teleport: Predominantly his most annoying move aside from the spear, most Scorpion users use his teleport to close the gap between you and him/her if you're mid to full screen. This is evident when they continue to back up or constantly jump in the air. If you fight yourself at a distance, just block, then punish the teleport.

-Spear: Again, this is used to close the distance, as part of a combo, or to catch you in mid air. When fighting Scorpion it's best not to jump around a lot if you can help it. A good Scorp player will catch you mid-air with that damn thing, or teleport and punch you in the ankle, which still counts as a connection. It too, however, is very punishable, and all you need do is dash + block.

-Hellfire: This is an anti-turtling move. By blocking too much in anticipation for his spear or teleport, you're setting yourself up to get burned. But don't worry, it's not as lose/lose situation. The key to defeating Scorpion is good movement and well timed blocking. It seems complicated at first, but the more you practice, the more easily predictable he is.

-Take down: This is used primarily as a finisher to the 1,1,1 combo, or can be used to close short distances. If you find yourself close to mid-screen with Scorp, try low blocking. It prevents the take down, dodges the spear, and dodges the teleport, albeit the teleport wont be punished if you duck block it.

Fighting Scorpion is all about anticipation and predictions. Study him, learn him, and youll know what moves he will use for what oppurtunities. I hope this helps.

This needs to be stickied asap, +rep

Thank you kind sir, I hope they do!

Re: The Official "I Quit" Thread

Really good thread idea, Matt. Lots of people having a number of similar issues, especially those who are newer to fighting games. This is a great place to create a single, comprehensive thread to cover such problems. Props.

Re: The Official "I Quit" Thread

Really Good idea mate! Initially on seeing the thread name I thought this would be a place where all quitters would say their goodbyes lol. Maybe edit the title a bit?

I would, but this one draws more attention. Unless of course you're willing to do some grunt work for me and help spread the word about this thread. Then I'll change the name to something more conventional.

The content in the thread matters more than the title. If the so called 'quiters' and new players find the thread useful, it will naturally stay active.

Re: The Official "I Quit" Thread

Then let them come here and read what is has to say first. :D If it attracts them here, they will read it, and hopefully have an idea as to what is going on.

Re: The Official "I Quit" Thread

Good stuff man! And while your'e at it, i have a question too.

Once my opponent gets me in a rushdown spree (mostly in the corner), I get destroyed. I have no idea how I can break out of such a chain of combo's. I've tried using breakers, but they haven't worked out most of the time. Any tips in dealing with such situations?

Re: The Official "I Quit" Thread

good thread. i hope someone decides 2 throw a *****-fit in here one day. good entertainment, people

Re: The Official "I Quit" Thread

Awesome thread man! Saw a guy post the other night sayin he was quitting and wished I couldve helped him out but I didnt feel like I couldve helped him. Im not a noob or a scrub by any means. I guess Im an intermediate player and still have alot to learn before I consider myself advanced. But by no means do I think Im an authority and better players may have been able to help him. And with 3 kids I dont get much time to play online. So its good to hear theres a thread where people wont bust your balls and call you a noob or make jokes @ your expense because you dont live online. I think alot of people give up instead of seeking out better players for advice, for fear of being chastised. Because alot of players can be *******s that would rather boast and call you a Noob than lend a helping hand. So hats off to you sir!

Re: The Official "I Quit" Thread

A little bit of pressure is good. Ive been going to tournaments a long time and I don't really feel it anymore. Atleast not with fighting games. But because of this I tend to start playing lazy because to play to my Max potential I need to be a little nervous so I try harder.

I feel anxiety in Starcraft all the time. Because o don't always know what my opponent is doing. So I scout all the time because I need to fill this void lol.

Re: The Official "I Quit" Thread

Hey guys,

Nice thread! In my own opinion I'm a pretty decent player. I'm currently ranked 150 or so in ranked matches. That said, I'm still having a lot of trouble with Kung Lao and especially Raiden with the teleport and superman attack. Any tips or pointers? I'm an Ermac/Sub Zero player. I also find myself confused by the lack of recovery time on Sheeva's teleport stomp. Is there a good way to handle this?

I've been called a spammer (mostly while using Ermac) by a lot of people online. I was wondering if there is any truth in this or if people are just looking for excuses. The way I see it, it's zoning. My strategy revolves around keeping players at a good distance for the jump in 43% combo with the force push and switching the 43% combo with the low kick 3 hit combo. Are there any other strategies I should consider?

The thing with Ermac is his only real option to start a combo is with the Force Lift, most people do not understand how to dash block and will proceed to get lifted and then beaten. I hate playing Ermac, purely because all I see is Force Lift into the same combo, having said that, I don't care to message people or call them a spammer, you play the game how you want and if someone can't deal with it then it's their problem.

If your using Sub-Zero against a teleporting Raiden or Kung Lao, place a clone and get INFRONT of it, that way your opponent will teleport into the clone which gives you a free combo, they will soon change their strategies.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the Sheeva teleport? If you are using it and having problem with recovery time then you need to pick better situations to use it, for example catching someone whilst their throwing a projectile. If your being abused by the teleport stomp then I'd clone it up with Sub-Zero, since he jumps backwards, he will be out of the way and Sheeva will stomp the clone. If that doesn't work and your opponent decides teleport stomp is all they can use, pick Kitana and spam the hell out of her square wave dash, it will trump the teleport everytime.

Re: The Official "I Quit" Thread

I meant fighting against Sheeva. She has almost no recovery time after using the teleport stomp and it can be very hard to counter. I sometimes encounter players in ranked matches who use her and only use that one move, followed by a kick of sorts which is very hard to get around. Because it's ranked there's no chance for a rematch, so I can't choose a different character. That's why I asked for tips for countering.
