Smoke Thread - "Where There is Smoke, There is Fire!"

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one that's noticed the lag in all of his normals (even in practice) and as much as people complain about his speed I have to ask does his teleport look like its moving in slow motion to anyone else?

Smoke owned a nightclub in Prague, like the one in Eurotrip. Smoke also used to beat up human traffickers for fun. Smoke caused the downfall of the Soviet Union; he tried to do his finger-to-forehead fatality on Gorbachev... which is why he has that red blotch.

Abujizzah! Taiyoh!

When Slobodan Milosevic was thrown into jail after his war crimes hearing, many were pissed he didn't get capital punishment. But he did. Lying in his cell asleep, Smoke crept in and touched his chest, giving him a heart attack. In his spare time, Smoke likes to read Dostoevsky and enjoys borscht.

Ijuwah!

Am I the only one bugged by the fact that smokes losing his otg bombs yet gaining nothing in return like say some low attack option besides a poke or sweep?

Nah it's not just you bro. The OTG bomb is already difficult to land, and now they're removing it. He has no high-low mixup and already has a hard enough time getting in on his opponent -_-

I just played against someone who got distance then blocked low constantly. Every once in a while he would send out a projectile, but once I started using the Shake (projectile counter) he started to only block low. I'm not aware of any attacks smoke has that can knock someone out of a low block (like Jade's overhead staff smash for example) and I was literally unable to do anything to him.

How do you guys handle this type of player? What are the victory conditions if it goes to a draw (ie; round reset, player with most health wins, etc)? I could sit there and block low all day too, and maybe that's the "counter," but I'd like to hear how you guys handle this.

*edit* Below poster is correct - D1 is an overhead and does launch a low blocking opponent -- must have been the latency.

3,D1,2 all day long. If you are playing Smoke then learn to use it. It's probably the most important hit-string in his arsenal.

D1 is overhead and 2 is a launcher... Opponents who block low will eat a full combo.

That combo is my bread and butter... I tried it on him a few times and I remember he was able to block it and it had no effect. If this combo does go through a low block perhaps it was not working due to latency (it was a very laggy set of games)

I'm pretty sure the D1 is an overhead but anything is possible with the lag I suppose lol. If that fails there is always the throw.

B2 is an overhead that goes through a low block and you can follow it up with either 3 smoke bomb or go directly to a smoke Bomb and a throw should break a low guard it does in practice although that could be a bug

Damn seems the quick fix has effected smoke a lot of his combos are doing less damage now that otg nerf is gonna really suck

Nice thread dude. Cyber Smoke was one of my main characters in UMK3 but in MK9 I haven't used him much because of all of the noobs constantly using him. But the other day I decided to just try him out for a while and see if I like him, and he's actually really fun to use. He doesn't have good mixup games but he has so many options in battle and good damage so that makes up for it, same with Cyrax. His smoke towards/away is extremely useful to throw people off, or dodge projectiles. I also love his shake, it feels so good to be able to punish the projectile spammers. I'll definitely be using him way more often.

@Immortal Reaver - Absolutely, and no problem! This thread is home to those who wish to clear his name of the trash that you see roaming Online Lobbies.

And fellow Smoke users, I agree that he needs a Low mixup combo starter. I can rush my opponent down like NO ONE'S business (as I usually do. Smoke is designed to be played very offensively from what I can tell.) But his lack of mixups really destroys his offensive properties (high block anyone?). I've even recently started incorporating Smoke Away/Towards and Invisibility into my komboing in order to fake the opponent out (A substitute for mix-ups).

Any more ideas?

Well his sweep is godlike but other then that his low game blows so what I like to do sometimes is simply go invisible then just annoy the crap out of my opponent with low pokes and sweeps (royal pain when they cant see um coming) oh and don't forget smoke is the best antizoning character on the roster his teleport is great for closing the gap on projectile spammers which along with his shake will have your opponent thinking twice about abusing projectiles

With Smoke I use throw very often, after 3-4 throws the opponent starts to block less and tries to stay away from me, making fatal mistakes :)
