Yeah, leaving it running for hours on end is a bad idea. I know people that do that, and many of them have gone through a couple of PS3s, so just turn it off. Also, cool, now you won't have to go far to get it fixed. Remember, watch those vents!
 
Its funny how unreliable modern day hardware is compared to in the 90s. I still have a 90s sony monitor (which was pretty expensive back in the day) and it still works like brand new. Same goes to Ipod, you own one for a year or two and it breaks apart,malfunctions, whatever.
 
The original NES was a completely different story; I went through about 5 of those things. Not to mention if one speck if dust got in the cartridge the thing wouldn't read it. Glad that Nintendo hardware got better over the years. I still prefer my genesis over the NES. Still have that too.
 
There's a way to fix a YLOD PS3 by disassembling and putting it in an oven (I kid you not, you can google for it.) I wouldn't try it myself, though.
 
Well I bit the bullet and gave it to the technician around the corner. He came to the conclusion that it is the laser because he can hear the disc spinning so the gears in the drive are fine. $140 but it will be done by tomorrow. Man oh man, I love gaming but it sure is expensive.

I just noticed the little shame skull I got for this. Thank you sir may I have another? I didn't call anyone out or badmouth anyone and some mod thinks this is shameful lol My ps3 died! What if you couldn't play MK after downloading the DLC that we've all been waiting for? You'd be mad too. There's another MK forum that I use and they've only tried to help me out and have tried to cheer me up. I'll spend my time there if this is how you roll around here.
 
This is what a mod just sent me along with the -9 rep points:

I bought it new and xbox's/microsoft are no better.

Consoles can only take so much abuse. I take breaks from playing to allow the machine to cool off a bit. PS3 builds up heat very quickly, so it's best to play in shorter bursts.

Well, FOURTH, but I bought the fourth one cause I wanted the upgrade so I don't count that as a break. I'm still on my first 60 gig backwards compatible PS3 I got in 2007.

Since youre getting your PS3 fixed, we should game sometime.

I have PSX, PS2, & PS3, All original formats (no slims or smaller editions),
And all of them work and have NEVER given me any problems...
 
Not to try to one up you, but I'm on my fifth Xbox 360.

First one just caputskied, second one went all Matrix on me (Green lines), one after that stopped reading disks, fourth one RRoDed.
 
I bought my PS3 when it first came out.

I have played my PS3 like CRAZY. If a weekend is rainy, I literally spend all day playing it without giving it a rest.

My PS3 is still in perfect condition, never had any issues with it, ever. Some people have bad luck, some people care for their consoles better (my PS3 is like my baby <3)

Sorry to hear about your luck, that blows.
 
I got the YLOD, even though I take pretty good care of my PS3, plus I give it time to rest (even though I do play it alot lol). I've had it for four years, so I guess it was just its time. Hopefully I can send it in for repair soon, especially since I found a good price. :)

It's funny, because my first gen 360 has never broken on me in 5 years. I have literally kicked it over while a game was running and both the game and machine were fine. I think it might be protected by a divine being.
