Saying GG After a Game

But seriously, I liked to keep to player matches (unranked) which means I usually end up fighting the same person over and over again, so I like to keep things fair and clean. Even if I get beat 5 times in a row (which happened last night to some dude who was like 485-63) I just say GG to show him there's no hard feelings for my losses, I can take it like a champ, and in some cases I like to invite them to be my friend so they can help me train later on.

The point is, learning how to lose and learning how to know be an ego-maniac after each match goes a long way, and it shows a sense of maturity in this game (which seems to be lacking at some points, I'm afraid) so that when you face these people again, it'll be on much friendly terms, rather than as enemies.

This mentality will help you in future matches as well. We all have competitive spirits, even if we don't like to admit it. But, when you enter a match with the mindset that it's more of a friendly sporting fight than a 'I'm going to crush you and piss on your ashes' kind of a fight, you'll see that your attitude before, during, and after each match will improve as well. No matter how you win or lose, try saying 'GG' after a few matches. If you start to build the habit of doing that, I guarantee your gameplay experience will increase threefold. :D

People need to remember that it is just a game. I don't get these people who take games seriously and rage after a loss....I love games but I wont go as far as losing my cool over a loss....that's just ridiculous. I say GG, no matter what, because I want the other person to know that I am not angry at losing and that it was a fun match. People who get legit mad over a game are pathetic...I get the competitive nature of some games but, at the end of the day, it is still just a game. Play to have fun.

Thank you Critical Limit and Jade. You two are pretty much the only two people in this entire thread who understood the message I was trying to get across. As for everyone else, I'm not trying to sound rude, but I can't think of any other way of saying this without being perfectly blunt; this thread's intention wasn't to draw the attention of the entire MK community so that they could state their personal opinion on that matter and how THEY react to every match. Don't get me wrong, it's nice when people put in their two cents if it's actually helping support the cause, or if you have a valid argument. But flaming someone just for the sake of being an egotistical jerk goes against everything this thread stands for. (and the point I tried to get across)

So here we go, one more time. I'm going to try and make this as clear as possible, so there is no reading in between the lines.

'GG' is a virtual handshake, nothing more. Critical Limit said it best, so read his/her first post for a more better understanding.

It doesn't stand for 'GREAT GAME' or 'Wow dude that was like the best match I ever had, HIGH FIVE!". If I said that to every spammer/tool I fought against, I would have went insane weeks ago. No, it's merely a sign of respect, which means no hard feelings, and that's it. If you personally don't think the person deserves a GG (even after you NOW KNOW what it means), then don't. Again, this thread wasn't for you, it was for the people who are new to online games, or haven't played fighters, or any game for that matter, online before, or have rage problems, etc. etc. It was meant as a simple exercise that you can TRY OUT if you feel like it, but again, that's it. If you're used to online match ups, or you have your own way of handling things/your anger (if you have any rage issues), then don't worry about it, this thread isn't for you.

I too played SC2 last year, and a lot of online games before that, so GG is something I grew up with, and if my thread looks familiar to something else, that's probably because other's think like me. (copying it wasn't my intention.)

Also on last thing; you don't have to GG after EVERY SINGLE MATCH. If you play ranked matches for like 3-6 hours a day, yeah, that would be way too taxing for anyone. I'm saying try sending it to people you feel deserve it, or someone you played several matches with in a row. Show there are no hard feelings. Or maybe they actually were good games. Either way, that's it. If you want to try it, go for it, otherwise, leave it be.
 
Coming from Pro Level UnrealTournament 7-10 Years ago... and currently StarCraft2.. i tell you this. "GG" is an over used Term and meaningless phrase, nothing more or less. And from my Experience, 90% of the People always writing these phrases are hypocrits.

Knowing that you come from such a back round, if true, then you should know that 'GG' is not, not, not, not, not a meaningless phrase. At all. I've played online tournaments back in the Warcraft 3 days. I got to tell you, when you reach tournament level, 'GG' is probably one of the best/most used phrases anyone could type in. 'Over used' makes it seem like people just spit it out, as if their fingers do it automatically and their brains have no control over it. As a tournament player (or casual) its just used as a sign of respect.

That's a total statistic you just pulled out of your ass. I've never met a person who said GG and didn't mean it respectfully. Then again, it's the internet, so people's motives are questionable. But if someone were saying GG just to be a smartass, I could think of plenty of other things to say to piss them off. Just saying.
 
I have had some back and forth matches with some players - win 1, lose 1, win again, etc. and plenty that go the distance with barely any health left to each player. I will usually send a message like "good match", or "that was fun".
When I lose bad, I will usually try to fight 1 more time for the revenge factor. If I get crushed, I send the "Thanks for the beating" message. I can respect when someone is better than me.
The only thing that really infuriates me is bad lag, and then trash talkiing. Absolutely no need for that.
 
To me, it just seems like Ranked Matches are where the unsportsmanlikes are. I haven't played a Ranked in a long time, because it just seems like if you're not a cheap player, people will want to keep playing you and have good fights. Way more fun, and GGs.

It's just a game, sure, but that doesn't apply to all gamers (Tom Brady knows). I play some games for fun and other games competitively. Getting angry at a video game when you're trying to be competitive is perfectly natural, and it could be due to many different reasons (team sucks, opponent sucks, I suck, etc.). What really matters is how you direct that anger. Unfortunately, most people like to direct it at others; I've lost to people who still felt the need to send me a nasty message. I've also been accused of spamming by a spammer (which is why I started spamming in the first place). THAT'S pathetic. The mentality of some people amazes me.
 
I say gg if the person i fought does put up a fight. If they are good with one character but bad with another, ill say that they should stick with there better character, that they are skilled with them.
 
I usually cry after a match, win or lose. But a GG does initially help cheer me up and I deal with it by writing in my diary. But usually if they are a *****, I let them know. Or if it was a great fight I contact them, but they usually contact me first.

And when I clearly get outplayed I just say I'm impressed and wish I could play that well with that character. But I'm not gonna say GG because having my ass handed to me isn't exactly my idea of a good game lol. :p

I agree completely. I fought this guy who beat me about 9 times. (I DID put up a good fight, though. Beat him three times.) And I was on the mic talkin to him the whole time. Afterwards, he sent me a message sayin gg. I asked back "what does that mean?", he said "good game". I sent him a friend request and now we play together every so often.

It's a metaphor for a handshake, much like two pros do when they fight each other. Even if one gets flawless victoried on, they still shake hands right?

Since you can't shake hands online. GG is substituted.

That's what "Good Game" became FOR SOME noops because clearly they could never get a real good game lmao. :p

But no matter how hard you newbies try to change the meaning of GG it will always stand for "good game" for the true and the legit oldschool gamers. :) So don't tell me when to use GG.

Plus I don't want to :quoties:shake hands:quoties: with some dirty noops.

GG no rematch. :thefinger:

I believe their was an entire thread about that video.

I never say "GG" unless I'm playing against a friend. Waste of time, if you ask me. I think it's understood by both players if it was a good match or not, nothing needs to be said.

I have a GG macro in my chat list. Will drop it for a standard balanced match. I have other compliments saved for tighter, more intense opponents.

Ok... I've been playing competitively since Starcraft BW, Also played SSBM competitively for 7 years, Halo2 for only 1(hate that community), So by no means and I a "newb". Starcraft BW is when I learned about GG. And even if you REALLY don't feel like using GG because you felt like you made 20 mistakes more than normal, or your opponent fell into stupid traps. Whatever the case, it's still a form of handshake. Go to Korea and play in GSL, or go to NASL, and don't type GG after a match you felt was not great. And I promise you some people will be like "oh man someone is salty because they didn't GG"

Idra has gotten tons of crap about not GG'ing. And now he GG's all the time, and is finally regaining some respect coming out of infamousy. (although I've still seen him rage a few times even lately)

I can't say the same for SSBM because this game YOU HAVE to play in person. but I always shake my opponents hand, which is essentially GG.

Your comment makes me question your claim to "competitive hardcore gaming history"

@Person who said GG is virtually meaningless and they play StarCraft 2. Sure... people may say GG, and secretly HATE you. And thus you may get the point where it's "meaningless" But it's like when you REALLY don't want to shake the hand of the guy you played because he did some weird strategy and it was EXTREMELY unorthodox and unsafe but it worked on you(and it was cheesey.) you will still GG, if you care at all about personal image, Or your opponents feelings (sometimes, i'd like to think most people who play competively have grown some thick skin)

But most people I've known see "Not saying GG" as rude. And even if it's a game where it's not used as often as Starcraft. for instance Mortal Kombat. Sending a GG to someone can make them feel better that they "finally got to meet someone else who isn't a douche"

It's nice and friendly, so not wanting to type out 2 letters and send it. Is not only extremely lazy, but just goes to show you are selfish and only care about yourself. and your extra 3 seconds.

But at the end of the day... saying GG makes people feel better about matches so why would you not put in freaking 4 seconds to make things more comfortable for your opponent.

Friendly Aura
It's as simple as, if you send GG. You will give off a friendly Aura about yourself no matter the situation. If someone directs their anger at you, Then obviously they don't deserve your time to put forth a "friendly" message.

If you don't send a GG, and your opponent doesn't, then I suppose it's fine. Because chances are they aren't in the loop about GG, and they are unaffected.

@vulcanHades: If someone sends you a GG, and you don't think it was a GG. Do you still not send one?

Like I said, if it's a forum member or someone in my friendslist, I will of course say GG even if it wasn't a real GG. I understand it's sometimes used just like a handshake or to say "gotta go now, see ya next time". But besides that no I won't unless it's a close match.

If someone whoops my ass and sends me GG. I will reply: "Good job kicking my ass lmao." But I won't say GG back.

Here's an idea: why don't you noops come up your own thing instead of changing the meaning of old ones? I think Imma make a new online rule: From now on it's HH for handshake and GG for good game. :)

All I'm saying is that there should be something reserved for only GOOD ****ING AND EXITING GAMES. So if you newbies wanna keep saying GG for handshakes. Then I guess we'll just have to come up with something even cooler for good games. Something like EE. That's gonna stand for "EPIC ENCOUNTER". :p
