Pretty sure I know why MKHD was cancelled . . .

UMK3 is probably by far the most popular MK game. I think it would be cool to see them add DLC to that game or a remake of MK Armageddon and scrap the KAF with real finishing moves

OMG! I think your right. Adding DLC like Noob, Rain, Baraka, and Raiden would complete the game.

Eh, well...if MAME's way of ripping sprites is anything to pass by, TA' sprites had half of the size of MK's (not to mention, the game was made by Data East Pinball Division, which means, those guys had pratically no idea what a fighting game should play like...the final build had a bug that made the game lag!).

I somewhat agree with your theory...however, I believe that anything (possible of being made, of course) can work if given the effort. IMO, MKHD didn't came to fruition because it would be either "cannibalized" by it's big brother (MK2011) competition (kinda like SSF2THD was, compared to SF4...not that SSF2THD was any good to begin with; my opinion about that game is that it served for nothing but to have it's stages ported to Mugen, as the characters were awfully sprited, and to make matters worst, it was not tournament worthy as the original), or that it would be too much work for nothing:
Don't fix what isn't broken.
difficult to recreate the same hit box with a new actor.
See what I mean?

OMG! I think your right. Adding DLC like Noob, Rain, Baraka, and Raiden would complete UMK3.
In other words, make a non broken version of MKT? I'd like that, but I don't think NRS have the source code anymore (or, if they have, then it wouldn't be the same game tournament players have been playing after all these years)...

I'm probably alone here, but I would've liked to see how these HD updates were working out. Don't get me wrong, I love the originals as much as every other "older" fan, but I've played those 20, 40, 80 times on a lot of different platforms for years... this would've been something refreshing. IMO, SSF2THDR looked and played OK, so I thought... why not MK? But then again, that's me.

For the actual collection that's coming out, I'm wishing for some fun extras, at least. Please don't let it be too bare bones.

Got the playable demo of death cargo today, not too bad.

Just checked the fatality videos and they are sick as hell.

I think the game got cancelled because it looked like shit and probably played like it too...
Just look at the position of the wood in the Kano TYM pic, totally off (I wouldn't even put a picture like that on my resume). The nicest picture in my opinion was the Lui Kang fatality picture, and it just looks like a slightly updated MK2 picture. A game like this would've have sold almost no copies, especially when the release was in the shadow of MK9 (consider this game the HD Kollection - has (almost) all the characters, backgrounds, etc...).
I'm glad the real Kollection will come out soon, 'cause nothing beats the old MK's in their Klassic glory!

@CF7 : Ed Boon was a pinball software developer too, did software work on classics pinball machines like Taxi!

It is still amazing TA played the way it did, and--WHAT!? Are you serious, Yuri Helsen!? Oh, the shame...egad, I hope Ed is not reading this Thread...! Oh my, oh my...!

Yeah I first wanted the HD version to come to fruition, and was pissed when it was dropped. But then I saw the screens of the project and how it was gonna look, and could understand completely why it was canned. Looked horrible.

WTF? Am i the only one who thinks that those HD screenshots look awesome?

Im really pissed that they cancelled it.

Digitized graphics aren't going to cut it in 2011. You think people went ape-poop over Freddy, imagine the outrage if MK9 looked like that Death Cargo game. I mean, it's cool for a indy type game but no way should a major franchise like MK look like that.

i wrote an entire response to why death cargo moved and looks incredible (for the amount of money they probably used on it), then i just said f--k it, i'm tired of trying to convince people that nrs could do this, but they don't want to. death cargo moves better than mk1-umk3, and it moves better than mk9. hell, pirrahna soldier from youtube, one of the people working on death cargo, made fanmade fatalities that were better than what nrs made. it's absurd.

Death Cargo was apparently made with a pseudo-flash development program that looks like God knows what as it tries way too hard to rip off every fighting game franchise in history. Who would have thought that digitized graphics (MK) with a dark KOF style theme and Street Fighter type characters (whoever that Blanka look-a-like is) would turn out the way that it did. "Flash" based fighting games aren't even on par with your average mugen compilation, and the "filmed in my backyard" fatalities can't hold a candle to Mortal Kombat. I hate to bash someone's work because I wouldn't want someone to bash mine, but the fact that you essentially praised Death Cargo's gameplay over every previous MK game including MK9 makes me think you're piranhasoldier.

If they want to make a good fighting game, they need to actually code it. Bring something new to the table, and make it presentable (e.g. not filmed in their garage) otherwise it'll garner the response that it has.

Yea, I always thought it would be Fantastic if they truly remade MK1 with digitized actors (perhaps the best roster lineup ever maybe 1-4) I kinda got my wish when mk 9 came, but as one of my best friends so easily put it "I miss the digitized graphics" and i totally agreed. At least were back on the 2d side (i knew that was coming after sf4) I don't know about any actors getting famous of off mk. I dont even see why they keep that fatty carlos pesina on the payroll. I thought his MKdeadly alliance kung fu developer commentary was asinine. Same with sal divita but hes became a pretty good game talent with his own studio

I think everybody has a different opinion, and tbh, everyone is entitled to it. But lets face it: The concenses is UMK3 is the best all around game. Its fast, its fun. Sure its been 15 years .WOA did i say that :? since the release date, and sure it needs tweeks, sure you can add some of the missing characters, but even if left in the arcade original form, its a really good game to pick up and play, no matter what platform.

but damn i already have umk3 on xbla, and the servers are up, but noone plays it anymore. rooms are empty. i like mk 2 best because it cuts the infinite spammers out. (looking at u ermac) def will be playins 2 online the most

UMK3 for x-box is dead because nobody can download it anymore.
The DS community for UMK is very much alive and well you can always find a match. That being said, the new MKAK if released would probably take the DS MK players out of the equation.

Maybe I was a bit harsh in my first post, but...
The studio probably took a bit to much hay on their fork and got over-budget. Or they couldn't develop something presentable in the time they had, or maybe both...
Production of a game like this would cost tons of money, everyone needs to get payed. Actors and film crews, programmers, 3d artists, etc - it's a big list. Delevering a quality game (having films like 300 and UMK3 gameplay as a my standard :) ), takes a lot of time and effort, thus big bucks.
After the Midway takeover, WB and NRS couldn't take the chance releasing a (sorry guys,) third grade, to early released game next to the MK9 release. WB needed to break even and make profit through NRS.
I truly hope that a new, digitized MK will see daylight. But I have my standards, and cheap ass action movie style isn't one of them. The good thing is, WB broke even, so maybe there is hope for this IP. But I guess they'll focus on a release of a new 3D MK first, because MK9 layed golden eggs last months.
I am already glad with the release of MKAK, finally we can all play the old games together. Hopefully it will be Third Strike Online grade, but I don't think that will happen - the 10 dollar price tag makes up for that.

Looks like there's still plenty of discussion on this.

My final thoughts on HDAK are that it would've been a much better idea to simply remake MK Trilogy. They would've only had to make one engine, and the beauty is that it wouldn't have had to be "arcade perfect" because there was no arcade release. MKT was also broken to begin with, so basically, that leaves a lot of room for change. It would've been far less work than trying to remake three games. At the end of the day, that project was just too ambitious for its own good. I think that MKTHD would've had a much better chance of happening, and it's a shame the devs didn't try for that option instead.

i really just want mk2 for xbox...and for WB to put back UMK3 on xbox cause not everyone bought it in time.
