Open Letter to NRS regarding KP2

After realizing with several fighting games having guests as of lately, I'm still not sure why this is such a bothersome towards people.

And I really don't think this reveal is worst than Freddy's reveal. I mean, yeah two+ days of constant annoyance from users and having people making letters thinking this will make a difference to Boon and the developers could be looked at as something terrible. But I've seen people who I actually respected just turn into total asshats out of nowhere when Freddy got revealed. With this release, no one really acted rude towards people, unless you're on MKO but that doesn't count.

I did a double take with this pack, at first I didn't care for it but now I don't have a problem with them having a guest and a half be brought into the game. Bo Rai' Cho returned and I've always liked that character. Can't wait to get a glimpse of how their gameplays are like.

And as for the letter, I really don't think it's necessary. I'm tired of people sitting here claiming that core fans aren't being heard of anymore and that casuals are the spokespeople for this series now. This letter doesn't speak for me and it never will.

To me, it's because I don't care about guest characters. I'd rather have more MK characters than guest characters. There are so many people who wanted certain MK characters to appear in MKX, and instead we get a couple of guest characters. It's like watering down a glass of some good scotch.

In short it is a clash of opinions. You like it and you're fine with it. Others don't like it. And people have spoken.

Other games like Soul Calibur or Super Smash Bros have a long history of having guests. It is expected. Mortal Kombat 9 and X are the first ones to do that. MK9 was a surprise, MKX was expected, but a lot of people expected only 2 guests. 4 is too much. Why? Simple

That letter can be summarized into this. I played game for 20+ years, got connected with many of its characters and their lore, and now all of sudden I get Predators, Aliens, Letherfaces and Jasons.

That is not surprising. You get used to having a game filled with MK characters, but now it is becoming into some sort of mess.

I see their fans campaigning hard online for the return of characters such as Alex, Guile and Urien. A few months go by and Capcom unveil their DLC line-up. Low and behold it features those same heavily requested characters."

Correct. Fans asked for their favorites. Made petitions and so on. Yet got those guest characters. Another thing why people are pissed.

At this point it is already clear. They do not listen to their community. That's a fact. And that just distances their fans (not all obviously).

You know, I will be laughing if they will make KP3 and add more guest characters. Oh boy. That will be a death sentence.

So to put it simply.

You like KP2? Fine. Congrats for you. I am happy for you and I hope you will enjoy it.

Yeah I know there are a lot of people who like KP2, even though they played since MK1. But not everyone feels the same about MK. Some see it as a cool fighting game with gore, violence and awesome characters and are open minded about all those guest characters. Yes, I'm fully aware of this. But there's really nothing people can do now. You can sit here and complain as much as you can, but they're still aiming on releasing these characters to all of us. They're not going to suddenly scrap this and give us new stuff because a lot of people are mad. I'm not asking for people to just deal with this as I would like to say, but constantly complaining and writing letters on how a dear loyal fan you have been isn't going to really make a difference.

But I will agree with you on one thing, people are trying to piss other people off for absolutely no reason. It's gotten bad to a point where I'm still disgusted with this fan base. I've followed games where fans can act really immature for nothing, but at least they don't get so upset that it looks like they're really suffering here. There's really no reason for anyone to act this immature, especially for some DLC.

But why should Netherrealm do what other companies do? Why can't they do their own thing? I've said this various times and no one seems to answer me, why should Netherrealm copy what other companies do with their fighting game series?

Except they do listen to their fans and it's not a fact that they don't. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they add Tremor? Didn't they touch up Tanya after people looked at her and thought she was white-washed and also claimed that she didn't really look like Tanya? Tell me again on how they don't listen to their fans when this game literally is nothing but what fans wanted. Yeah that's only two examples, but they were huge wants.

Now, people are being called out because they're not, what this letter claims, are core fans. Core fans aren't being listened? I beg the differ. This letter carries a false voice because how I look at it, they're making core fans sound like this pack is definitely a horrible thing for us. But as I've stated, this letter doesn't speak for me. I hope others feel the same way too. I look at this pack and yeah, I didn't get what I wanted. I didn't like it at first but then I came to a realization that you're not going to get everything, make the best out of it. If you can't, then just move on and forget it.

Why is it suddenly a problem for people? And just because other games are including guests and Mortal Kombat wants in on doing the same thing, why is that a problem when people keep comparing this series to other fighting series?

Yeah I know there are a lot of people who like KP2, even though they played since MK1. But not everyone feels the same about MK. They were made specifically for that spot. No character is taking a spot away from some other character that deserves it more. Many would argue that Fujin deserves a spot over anyone, well, unfortunately no matter how much a character is demanded, a fan's want doesn't make a reservation for a character. A fan's want is more so telling a company that they would like to see them in the future and hope that it's sooner rather than later.

I just got to say that the lores always been one of my main attractions and these guests were not even want I would of preferred over other MK characters I wanted.

But I'm not that bummed because they're at least characters I've always been in to. Now I get to try and be very good with them in MK. With not.

Trolling whole year with MK9 PC possibility
Finally releasing MK9 on PC and claiming that people didn't really ask for it

Mortal Kombat 9 patch released and servers updated after MKX announcement (what a coincidence). Which is a whole year later after MK9 PC release. And people asked for fixes for a WHOLE FREAKING YEAR. People made petitions for patches, wrote Ed Boon and other NRS devs. Did their somehow miss that too?

People asked High Voltage not to be part of PC port (I was also one those who asked for that, and so was German MK community (with whom I decided to write the letter, after we learned that Voltage were to work on PC port))
MKX release. High Voltage still did PC port.
Reported issues on XBOX and PC version.
MK PC version is hit the hardest.
NRS developers avoid talking about MKX PC and XBOX issues. Use only PlayStation version to show their game on streams.
People ask for fixes. New "patches" just make MKX even more unplayable

Tremor and Tanya hype rose up after MK9 specifically. Yes they were requested a lot too in the past, but they hype grew that big just after MK9. Especially for Tremor after his appearance in Vita version of MK9.
Fujin was asked for 10 years. And not by minority of people. There were enough people asking for him, that you could easily make him the new face of Mortal Kombat.

So after this whole list of NRS achievements... excuse me if I don't tear up and hail NRS as Saints who listen to their community. Cause they are not saints. They representative Ed Boon is a complete f$%king liar and two characters cannot cover for 3 years of Bullshittery.

Those two measly guest characters could have been Fujin or Sareena. That puts fans in interesting situation. Because there are already speculations about KP3 and NRS mentioned about making MKX into MK11. If it's true, it means one thing.

The only way for Fujin or any other favorite character to appear in MKX is to come with KP3. For KP3 to happen, KP2 has to sell well... The same package which is filled with Alien and Leatherface.

It is pretty much psychological thing. After you get used to seeing roster filled with only MK characters only (for 20+ years), those guest characters stick out like lightbulbs. A lot of people are still not used to that. Hell I am not used to that. Yeah I said "ok fine. Two guest characters. I can live with that. And hell they brought Jason. Cool! But enough, ok?"

And yes even though it is just 4 guest characters (I don't care that Alien has Tarkatan blades and will fight like Baraka, he still counts as full guest character. It is a creature and a combination which doesn't exist in known MK lore.) They saturate roster a lot. It really feels like a mess, in a roster which had only MK characters for so long.

Street Fighter. Close to flawless online. Roster stayed SF friendly all the time and they are not pushing any guest characters as they realize that people are not looking for that in SF (Street Fighter was established as a game with no guests). Street fighter 4 has been supported for many years. You didn't have to wait for game fixing patches for MONTHS. Oh wait. They released proper PC Port. With working Online.

So should Netherrealm look at other fighting games and learn from them? Yes they should. Definitely.

In other words. If Mortal Kombat 2 or 3 had put guest characters in the past, you wouldn't see anyone saying anything about them today. If anything were would be just the usual stuff. "Ah I wanted Jason to make it. Oh well. Leatherface took the spot. Will wait for another Kombat pack, or maybe next installment. Maybe then I will see Jason".

But they brought guests only at 9. After game has established itself as pure MK (jeez, when I say "pure" I sound like Tarkatan_Trash to myself. Pfeee...). After game has made strong roots in gaming industry after TWO DECADES of being what it is. Now they decided to change it by adding Guests. So this is pretty much the reason why a lot of people are having an issue with it. Especially with the fact that they are multiplying the amount of guests by 2.

To be honest I would be more lenient about that KP2 thing if I wouldn't had shit thrown in my face by NRS for the past 3 years.

I don't really hate the fact, that were are people who say that NRS "listens to their community and are good developers". I just simply laugh to myself while I wipe all the remaining shit I had thrown at me by NRS and use my trusty broomstick to clean my shattered Faith, Hope and Respect for them.

Ok let me rephrase that. They don't listen to majority of their community. Now claiming otherwise, would be pretty unwise, as there is pissed PC community, pissed Fujin community and pissed MK fans who don't like guest characters and are pissed about NRS handling with their community.

Honestly, do you really think this letter is going to change this pack? I'm asking you a honest question. If anyone from the developing team sees this letter, do you think it's going to change anything?

The only thing I could see happen, and it's a slight chance that this could, is someone writing an apology to their fans. But if they do change anything, I would sit here and say they're nothing but bootlickers. This is their game, and it's a company that likes to listen to their fans. But does everything need to be what the fans say, or can they do some things on their own without the help of fans?

The moment they do something that isn't with the aid of their fans, they get lashed at, insulted at, bombarded at and all these lovely tender moments of their fans making a big deal out of something that doesn't need it. I mean, I cannot comprehend how many people are upset about something that isn't even that big of a deal, and a lot of people that I've seen are taking this way too seriously. I'm going to throw this out there and say that 2011 was their first game after being bought out by Warner Brothers. I'm cutting them slack with issues with that game since they just came back from being bankrupt, as well as probably their first time dealing with programs for the newer generation of consoles.

I like that we're dealing mostly negatives instead of positives here. Games will always have problems, I don't know why you're poking so hard at that. Fallout 4 has some major bugs, but hey, they're getting fixed. So what the hell is wrong with a fighting game having problems, major or minor?

The only thing I will say, I do think it's dumb that they haven't fixed their netcode. That is literally the only thing I do not like that they haven't done. But am I going to go out, make a petition, write a letter saying I'm a die hard fan who's feelings are hurt because I didn't get what I want? No, because that's most likely never going to get fixed, and my words to them won't make a difference.

I'm not defending them, and I'm not defending fans. No one here is saying that this company is the greatest game company ever. What I'm trying to get out of this is that the reaction to this pack is completely horrendous and people are making way too big of a deal over it. No one can every be pleased with everything, and the moment they aren't, people will go out of their way to make it change whether it's crying on forums and hoping the developers see this or writing petitions/letters.

You can't get everything you want, and saying that Netherrealm should go to hell or acting like a child throwing a tantrum at the toy store because mommy won't get you that toy isn't going to do anything (Obviously this is going towards people in general). I am truly disgusted with how people are reacting to this. It stated with Freddy's inclusion as a DLC and it got even worse the moment Jason was introduced to us. This fan base is dumb, and that's coming from a diehard Blizzard fan who deals with stupidity on a day to day basis.(Blizzard's fans are pretty much this as well for those who don't know what I'm talking about) At least with those fans, they don't threaten the developers with dumb Tweets saying that they'll kill the guy's family if so-and-so isn't in. Well, Freddy was the most sold DLC and the last pack did well. I'm not going to say that this might do well, but Mortal Kombat DLC's seem to sell well. And who knows, you know who knows. I know this was aimed towards BBBLP, but I wanted to point this out. When I was lurking on other sites, I kept seeing this be thrown out by a crapton of people. I think I'm getting tired of seeing this more than those who are saying that Netherrealm doesn't listen to their fans.

What I'm trying to get out of this is that the reaction to this pack is completely horrendous and people are making way too big of a deal over it. In Europe Union this is a legitimate crime. Especially after contacting attorney here in Germany (during summer, when I couldn't play the game and couldn't get a refund) and giving all information about situation, I was told. That what WB/NRS did was "Misleading/False Advertisement".

WB/NRS make sure that PC Port is playable and has only minor bugs. They act as proper game devs and deliver the game. They buy proper servers and solve netcode issues as they know that it looks a bit pathetic that company like CAPCOM which is close to bankcrupcy has better online gameplay than MKX.

So I buy the game. It works day one. I have maybe one or two bugs. They are kinda annoying, but NRS drops an update saying that they are working on it. Two weeks later we get first patch. Fixes some bugs. People are happy. Online is thriving cause everyone can play. I am happy cause I can play the game. I enjoy the shit out of the game, I get my money's worth and I am happy. Then they release KP2 and I see Letherface and Alien... hmmm. Why them? Ain't a bit much? Oh well. I just simply can... NOT BUY them you know?

Couldn't play game for 4 months (for which I paid), false advertisement, online is beyond shit. Girl... where did I say that I follow those f%^kers? I like MK. I love that world. I love its characters. I love them so much, that even now I am still ok with sitting every night and drawing frame by frame of my new animation related to MK world. NRS and WB can go f themselves. I dropped them from my twitter and other social pages months ago.

Yes, I'm aware that everyone gets threats... WOW. I can't tell you how many I got just because of the gender that I am. But it's DLC. Downloadable content that is something you could get if you're interested in. If this was for the original game, then yeah I would have a little bit of a problem with it. But this is DLC stuff. Stuff that you don't need to get unless you really want to. Why is it that big of a problem when it's an option to get it?

If I feel cheated off of a video game, which I have had before, I would sell the game and just tell people my bad experience and hope to turn them around. Yes, please feel that way because as an artist, I am aware that a video game company is basically built with various artists. However, how I learn things is from mistakes. You learn from your mistakes, not taking a concept from another company and adapting it to your product.

Netherrealm Studios could learn from their mistakes rather than relying on Capcom's way of selling their products. But, I don't think that's going to roll with you.

You know you can get more money in many different ways? Like not pissing off half of their fan base with cheap guest characters?

Cause I can tell you one thing. If Street Fighter 5 is gonna keep going the way they are going, they will be swimming in money. They give FREE characters with OPTIONAL option to pay for them. And that actually is gonna bring them even more money. They made people happy, gonna get a lot of cash and everything is fine.

If anything there is a lot for WB/NRS to learn from Capcom (which is ironic as Capcom was on a verge of bankruptcy. Of course they still can mess up, but for that to happen they would need to ask some advice from Konami)

Last time I checked, a bunch of people were acting as spoiled as Mortal Kombat fans are the moment F.A.N.G. was shown. Holy shit was there a lot of backlash. How dare Capcom make a goofy looking "end boss" when they've made a series with a stretchy Yoga master, a green monster, and demonic possessive martial artists.

I still don't get why a company can't just do things on their own and not take a sneak peek at what their competition is doing.

Well let's turn back time and change few things.

WB/NRS make sure that PC Port is playable and has only minor bugs. They act as proper game devs and deliver the game. They buy proper servers and solve netcode issues as they know that it looks a bit pathetic that company like CAPCOM which is close to bankcrupcy has better online gameplay than MKX.

So I buy the game. It works day one. I have maybe one or two bugs. They are kinda annoying, but NRS drops an update saying that they are working on it. Two weeks later we get first patch. Fixes some bugs. People are happy. Online is thriving cause everyone can play. I am happy cause I can play the game. I enjoy the shit out of the game, I get my money's worth and I am happy. Then they release KP2 and I see Letherface and Alien... hmmm. Why them? Ain't a bit much? Oh well. I just simply can... NOT BUY them you know?

Current reality or the timeline where WB/NRS didn't do that.

Couldn't play game for 4 months (for which I paid), false advertisement, online is beyond shit. On a side note: Elder Gods help those souls who made that online, cause I am coming to USA at the end of the winter. And now KP2 to add more salt to injury. Yeah. You just see things differently when you're already pissed from being treated like shit for supporting a game which just your PC space for 4 months.

You're making it sound like how dare a game just be faulty. Games are faulty, unless you're the Metal Gear series then you're flawless. Not every game is going to be perfect. I've played shitty games before. But then came MKX. And all that crap with MKX was my last straw.
So in short I am here because I love MK world. Just because I am not planning on supporting NRS and WB by buying any other future MK stuff (like new installment), doesn't mean I will stop liking MK itself. I will still keep reading MK wiki. I will still make MK related art. I will still make 3D models of my favorite characters. I am an artist. I am game dev FFS. Hell if anything I can make my own Mugen like MK.

I am an artist too, I'd like to work for a game company in the future, I got projects of my own that I'm currently working on. I got a very expensive 3D modeling program that I'm learning on my own to be a better character modeler. What you're doing is nice, good for you. Two thumbs up!

I started studying art by using Chinese Martial Arts Philosophy. Just like Martial Arts originate from copying other styles so does Drawing originate from copying other styles. While the very origins come from nature itself, a lot of famous artists (like Leonardo Da Vinci) learned by studying other artists an din that way created their own style. Did I say it is bad to make a game with bugs and glitches? No. Of course it would be fine if they avoided that but we are talking about thousands of code lines and other things that make game optimization hard.
But is it ok to release a game so broken a person cannot play it. Especially after he paid money for it? No. It is unacceptable. Guest characters like Alien, Predator, Jason and Leatherface are simply targeted for money that is mostly from casuals. They are not designed towards HC MK players. It's that simple.

It's mainly because of WB games. They do not have proper fighting game history like Capcom / Namco. They simply just sell the product and gather masses and casuals with popular cultur characters. 99 % of the casuals have bought / will buy DLC because of guest characters and "I remember him from the movies lulz0r!!111"

To compare, Capcom already revealed Season 1 characters for SFV and they are all fan favorite, no matter if it was about casual / HC members of the community.

It's the way to go.

Once again, hardcore MK player here, I love Alien and Predator being in my MK game.

I know the lore like the back of my hand, I've owned every game in the series including spinoffs and most shifty ports, I bought the Special Edition of MKX, I have the Scorpion and Sub-Zero bookends surrounding my wireless router, I've written lame ass fan fiction and I've been a fan of the series since I was 3 years old.
