Chapter 5, Part 1 of 2
Sonya Briggs
Panama City, Florida
1992.
It was a rainy day August 25th of '92, and a 19 year old Sonya was on her way back from work. "Goddamn day shift won't ever end," she grumbled softly as she lit a cigarette and started her car up. *psssssstt* Smoke spouted from underneath her hood as soon as the igntion turned over. "Great! This is just my f*cking luck!" shouted an irate Sonya, as she flicked her freshly lit cigarette to the parking lot pavement and popped the hood. Scanning for any signs of wear and tear, she noticed her battery was missing, as well as other various wires and cables hanging freely. She slammed the hood with all her might and kicked a large dent into the fender and stormed off to the gas station across the road. Muttering mutliple obscenities aloud as the rain began to pick up, she approached the pay phone out in front. Jumbling around in her pocket for the tip money she had just made at work, Sonya slipped a few quarters and called home. "Hello?" answered her father, active duty Army Sargent Jackson Briggs. "Hey dad, I'm out of work and my ff..freaking car is dead. Some freak stole my battery and cut a bunch of my wires and junk." "Where are you calling me from?" Jackson returned, instantly worried about his daughter's well-being. Sonya sighed and thought to herself, "Typical dad, freaking out about nothing." "Well?!" her father exclaimed, already putting on his boots and jacket. "I'm out in front of the gas station across the road, calling you from a pay phone." "Alright," Jackson rushed as he gathered his keys "DON'T MOVE..I'll be there in twenty minutes." Sonya nodded as she said ok and goodbye, hanging up the phone.
About two minutes had past since Sonya had made the call to her father, when a slim young man approached her. Sonya, staring at the ground and making no eye contact, quickly stabbed out the words "What do you want?" The young man was taken aback, he had never been greeted so harshly. "Um..ah..Nevermind." He was slowly walking away when Sonya realized that maybe she was a bit too brash.. maybe this guy was only trying to help. She stopped leaning on the brick wall beside the pay phone and caught up to this guy who had just spoken to her. He was tall, lean. Looked to be in his Early-twenties, african american (like herself) with long straight hair. He wore all red (shoes, pants and shirt) and gave a grin and responded "What's up?" Sonya was smitten instantly, butterflies in her stomach.. but she had to keep a firm exterior; never show your emotions as her father always says. "What are you, like a blood or something? Are you in a gang? What?" she replied sharply as she looked away nervously. The young man in red let out a hearty laugh and responded, "Nah, I'm not in a gang or anything. I just like red.. it's a good color. Shows strong emotions." "Yeah well, what did you want back there?" Sonya replied meekly as her assumptions proved to be invalid. "Well," the young man said as he reached into his pocket for a smoke. Sonya was going to do the same, but realized she had left her pack in the car. "Hey.. do you wanna walk with me to my car? I left mine in there." The man nodded and walked in pace with Sonya to her vehicle, and after she had her Marlboro Red in hand, she gestured to this unknown man to continue his story.
"Well," he said as the smoke streamed from his nostrils, "I was going to say that I saw you were having some car trouble up here, saw it from the gas station. I'm pretty decent with cars, thought I could help you out." Sonya shook her head and replied with "No, that's fine. My dad is going to come pick me up, he should be here pretty soon." The man nodded and gave a sly smile as he said, "Mind if I look anyways?" Sonya laughed and said, "Well, if you can pull a new car battery out of the sky, then by all means yes." The man crossed his arms and said, "I'll make you a deal, if I get your car started after you pop the trunk, you get to let me take you to dinner." Sonya tried to hide her emotions again by turning her back to him so he couldn't see her smile. "Yeah," she called out as she got into her car, and pressed the hood release button, "And what if you don't?" She knew damn well there was no way he could get that car started.. there wasn't a battery in it. "Don't worry," he called out from under the hood, "I'll get it to work." Sonya smirked and replied with, "Sure whatev-" and was interrupted by her engine starting up like nothing had ever happened. She bolted out of the car and was met with the young man laughing triumphantly. "How..what? How did you do that?!" a bewildered Sonya asked. The man smirked and raised his hands and said "A magician never reveals his secrets."
"Sonya!" Jackson called out as he marched towards her and a shady looking boy. "What are you doing? I thought I told you to wait over there by the pay phone.. and who the hell is this?" The young man put his hands in his pockets and said "Im not anyone" as he walked away. Jackson looked towards his daughter with a grimace, "So you call me up to give you a ride, and your car is running fine-" "But dad, he fixed it!" Jackson laughed as he replied, "Sure he did.. sure he did. Now, you got me this once.. maybe it was running cold or something. Just follow me back to the house, we gotta fill out your papers for bootcamp tomorrow." Sonya replied with a lazy "Sir, yes Sir" and a half-hearted salute. She got back into her car, still utterly confused it was running without a battery. As she pulled out of the parking lot, she noticed the young man was walking on the sidewalk near her direction. She slowed down next to him and said, "You still owe me that dinner, Mysterious One haha." He nodded and said, "That I do, that I do Ms. Understood." As she was about to step on the gas, she had forgotten one important detail. "Hey what's your name," she called out. "Don't have one!" he yelled, as the distance increased between them, "But you can call me ..Er.." he looked around hurridly and noticed a mack truck that passed by. "Mac! Call me mac!"
