MK HD Kollection

Re: MK Arcade Collection in November (?)

Something kind of interesting and worth noting. Just saw that Samsung's 3D games Twitter account just tweeted (did I just say that?) this message:

No one appears to have asked them, they just felt the need to post it. Hhm....

Looking at the rest of her tweets, it seems that she's mostly posting random finding. The mock (?) box art we've got so far has the 3D compatible sign so... I wouldn't make much of it.

Anyway, that Sony exclusive game is likely an announcement of a new first party title. Perhaps Uncharted 3.

I'm thinking that the box is BS. I just don't see how or why they'd add 3D to a 2D game. It's not like anyone with Photoshop couldn't have put that together, so it's entirely possible (and to me, probable) that it's just something some fan/troll made to garner attention.

EDIT:
Sorry for sparking such a debate, Kergon. I wasn't trying to accuse anyone of providing fallacious info. I was simply putting a "possibility" out there. Those posts are good reads, and you made a lot of sense. I hope you didn't pull too much hair out. :p

No problem. :)

That announcement could also be Starhawk, the rumored sequel to Warhawk.

Do you mean for the HD Kollection or the rumored MK 9 demo???

Ed Boon did mention, in previous interviews, that some stages in MK 9 would be rendered in 3-D as well.

As for the HD Kollection:
As I've said before; If it's out after MK 9, I'll just wait until it goes down to $15.

I agree the box art could easily be made, but even though it's a matter of opinion, I think it's well made. A designer shows his skill through a good design idea, more so than technical prowess. Then again any fan who is a designer could've also made it. As for 3D, if the collection includes the MK9 demo, there's your answer.

The box does look like a typical placeholder rather than a photoshop. It did appear in two forms on various websites (some small differences).

Anyway, the 3D is just the image output itself, rather than the fighting plane of course so it's possible. I just don't think the Samsung rep got actual info but merely spotted the box art online.

Re: MK Arcade Collection in November (?)

@Kergon,

You were inspired yesterday :). I agree with alot of things you said, but it has nothing to do with not being patient, I can wait as long as needed for it's release IF the rumors are true about it. It's great being kept in the dark... It's about principles Kergon. Apparently someone from WB leaked the info, and WB should assume their responsabilities and not play hide & seek (even if they didn't announce anything, someone apparently did). Now if the game is in development I don't mind not knowing, but if it's fake I don't see how that would hurt them by telling us. So here come what I said earlier IF it's fake, they should let us know.
There are fans out there that are more concerned about the rumor being true or false rather when is the release date.
About Ed I think you misunderstood what I said earlier. I didn't blame Ed. If the rumor is fake (which means there no contract whatsoever, so no one will sue him right?) then I don't see the reason why he can't say a thing about it.
And Kergon, for God's sake, you need to stop the "No one owe you anything, no one needs to say sorry and no one needs to explain anything" I remind you that in the buisness world the client's satisfaction is any company ultimate priority.

Anyway thanks for taking the time to explain your point of view, I appreciate it :)

What I meant with the PS bit is that just looks like something someone with some images of the cabs took and threw together. If it had in-game images, it would be more convincing, but slapping the cabs together and adding a few touches wouldn't be hard for anyone with decent PS skills.

And I get that the 3D deals with the on-screen output, but aside from the Pit II, the Subway and Scorpion's Lair stage fatalities, I really don't know how big of a difference it would make. I think it's related to the demo, and it's misleading, but every sale lines their pockets, so I can see it.

@gamemk
Black Friday wouldn't have much effect since brand new games don't get the special discounts Black Friday is popular for. Besides, if it's not ready, why would they release it?

Re: MK Arcade Collection in November (?)

Relating to my last post about Sony having an exclusive announcement the day after the VGA awards, December 12, I noticed something much more obvious - the VGAs themselves. So every year Spike does the VGAs- Video Game Awards. They have awards for best of the year, and there are also a lot of new games announced and shown to the public, like another E3 show. Last year there were a lot new stuff announced.

Spike.com is definitely hyping this one up a lot for new game announcements. Geoff Keighley of GameTrailers (who went to NR and showed the Jax exclusive) is also hyping the announcements on his Twitter. He already confirmed that Batman Arkham City will debut and show brand new footage of the game at the awards. And guess who makes Batman Arkham City? Rocksteady, a developer under WB. There are already more new stuff expected to be announced than last year's awards.

So far the confirmed publishers that will show new games and footage at the VGAs are: Sony, WB, EA, Microsoft.
There looks to be Batman Arkham City, a new Bioware game (maybe a new Mass Effect), new Kinect games, and a few new stuff from Sony (possible options are Resistance 3 or Uncharted 3 or Starhawk or something new). Also there is a rumored Gears of War for Kinect that might show up there.

Also, Spike has this teaser trailer for the VGAs, saying announcements are coming. There are hidden sections of the trailer saying "Look closer", and weird single frames screenshots saying 'Murder', and a picture of Zombies on a white sign. So there could also be a game like Left for Dead 3 or a new Dead Rising shown.

What's funny is that Spike is also doing the 'most anticipated game' poll on their website here, and MK9 is not one of the choices, but the comments section has a HUGE amount of people saying Mortal Kombat. Enough that Boon made a comment about the MK love on his Twitter.

So my point is that Spike/GameTrailers has already shown an MK exclusive a few weeks ago with Jax and the Subway, and a visit/filming of their office and mocap studio. No other TV show or game website has managed to snag such an exclusive of a new MK9 character, so WB and Spike should have good relations with each other. Also, their aired showing of the exclusive of Jax/subway on GameTrailers TV on the Spike Channel has gotten a huge number of ratings/viewings, and also that movie on their website of has gotten a big number of hits. So it's only normal in both WB's and Spike's interests to have another MK exclusive on Spike. Spike is the perfect outlet for showing new action/gory games due to its viewership and types of shows.

The 2010 VGAs (December 11 and 12) are the perfect setup for the MK Kollection announcement. WB is definitely confirmed to be there. They will show the Batman game, but it's pretty likely that they will show more than 1 new game. A lot of new games are gonna be shown there too from other developers. Sony is definitely showing at least 2 new games, and so is Microsoft. So it looks to be a big thing. And the timing of the event is perfect for an announcement, with the game being released in January or something similar.

Edit-
Actually, if the game is announced there, it doesn't need to be released January. It could be released even the week after on December 14, or on the 21st, to make it on time before Christmas. Very possible. Theoretically if the game was going to be released on the 14th, with the announcement on the 11th, we can listen to the word from game stores to see if they just received any shipments of the game already on the 10th or 11th.

Re: MK Arcade Collection in November (?)

In order for Mortal Kombat HD Arcade Kollection to sell good and not interfere with potential MK9 sales it needs to be released in December, and use something like the VGAs for an official announcement, which would be good advertisement. Everyone would get this game for Christmas then, and by the time April comes along everyone would be ready to purchase MK9. So Im with kergon, I have my fingers crossed for Dec 11th or 12th.

Considering there was a rumored release date around December 18, who knows? I agree with the both of you that a December release makes almost too much sense, all things considered. At this point, I have accepted the fact that I may never play this game. If it happens to come out at any time (the sooner, the better though), I'll be ecstatic.

Re: MK Arcade Collection in November (?)

Honestly, I've given up trying to dissect their advertising and sales plans. I've heard so many theories, including opposite (but also valid) opinions that it'd be more successful to release MKHD just before MK9. The fact is it's just too hard to tell, no matter how logical any speculation might sound. No matter what we think they should do, in the end, they're the professionals at this, not us. With careful strategies that not one of us could know, nor think up. Especially in regards to a giant like WB. Who would have a whole team dedicated to exactly this kind of stuff. It's safe to say they know what they're doing, I'm personally done trying to guess.

Your Opinions

Lately there's been so much talk soley about MKHD's existence. I thought we could all take a break from it,
and have some fun speculating on the presentation (among other updates) of the game instead. Granted it's been discussed before, but mostly in heated debate, which I think we could do without this time around. Anyway, I came up with some starting points to share opinions on, and hopefully we can come up with more.
Here goes...

Sprites & Backgrounds: How realistic or how heavily edited?
Sprite animation: Extra animations or original amount?
Blood: What kind of design? (Eg. MK9 style)
Finishing moves: Updated for realism or keeping the original designs? (Includes fatalities, brutalities)
Characters: Boss and secret character unlockables? Inclusion of previously rumoured characters (eg. Ermac)?
Exclusives: Just original arcade components or inclusion of console exclusive characters/stages etc?
AI & Gameplay: Corrected or the same? (Eg. psychic AI, broken bosses)
Online play: Barebones or heavy MK9-style features?

That's all I can think of for now, post what you think!

Re: MK Arcade Collection in November (?)

I say we all just forget about this game all together. That way if it does come out we can all be taken by joyous surprise, and if it doesn't then no skin off our bones.
I'm personally going to smack myself with a couple bricks to make sure I forget.

Re: Your Opinions

I hope the stages are extra detailed this time, some cherry blossom trees would be perfect for palace gates.
I hope the animals in the animalities are detailed and not just one color.
I'm stuck on a fence about the psychic AI, its so damn cheap but also part of what made MK a coin magnet. I've built up a personal hate for Jade from UMK3, that cheap b*tch :)

!
I want them to keep it all original, but make it as HD like as possible.

Re: Your Opinions

Honestly, I want them to keep as much stuff "original" as possible. Hopefully they will fix the overall gameplay and AI and make it where they can correct any future exploits as needed (DLC).

In regards to visuals, obviously the new actors shot in HD will be huge. I'm hoping the backgrounds look similar, if not better, to the Palace Gates fake that was posted. I know some people would like the Fatalities and such to look more polished, but I've always been a fan of the old school style (10 hands, 4 rib cages and 3 skulls, lol!). I understand the desire to make it seem more real, but to me, that would take away the nostalgia factor. That being said, if they changed it, I wouldn't be devastated, maybe just a tad bit disappointed.

Regarding unlockable bosses or playable hidden characters, I vote "No." I know lots of people would disagree, mainly because it was their dream to unlock Reptile in MK1, find the error macro himself, Ermac or even play as Noob, Smoke or Jade in MKII. The fact is, we never got it then, so would it really be that big of deal now? I like the old days when there were aspects of games that were dreams and dreams only. I say don't fix what isn't broken. In this case, leave the NPCs non-playable.

Multiplayer? If you mean 1-on-1 VS... of course. Online? Yes. Tag team? Oh hell no! That should be in MK9 and any future games, don't mess with the classics, though.

Here' something that you didn't mention specifically, and would seem to go against what I've been saying, but bare with me. I think the game should include HD remakes, separately, of MK1, MK2 and UMK3. But I think there should also be a "Trilogy" styled HD Remix game. It should include all the characters and arenas from the other games, but put them into this one mode (that includes the different versions of the characters as well .... i.e. MK2 Jax -and- MK3 Jax, both unique). Finally, and possibly most intriguing, would be to include a few "new" characters. By new I mean characters that appeared in the 3-D era of MK games. Can you imagine how cool it would be to play as Quan Chi in the classic, 2D visual style? We got a glimpse of him in Mythologies that way. I wouldn't go Armageddon in this Remix mode, but add some major characters from the 3D era (say the top 4 or 5, perhaps). If they're refilming all the old sprites, what's a couple extra ones, right?
