Kitana Revealed!

Did they defeat Liu Kang in a Mortal Kombat tournament sanctioned by the Elder Gods?

No?

Then they're not the main heroes.

You are not making any sense.

They ARE the protagonists.

By your logic nobody can be the protagonist of any Mortal Kombat game, not X not any future game if Liu Kang stays dead.
So from now on every MK game will be composed exclusively by extras...

You see how unlogical your logic is?

I never said for as long as he stays dead, I specifically said for as long as he remains Champion.

Well, Johnny has the title of Champion now. So Liu Kang isn't any longer.
How can Cage be the Champion if he never beat the Champion in an official Mortal Kombat tournament, unless the 95 movie is somehow canon?

The Great Kung Lao beat the Champion in an official tournament.
Goro beat the Champion in an official tournament.
Liu Kang beat the Champion in an official tournament.

It looks like he defeats shinnok in the netherrealm war, so he becomes the new champion

The 1997-1998 Chicago Bulls were swiftly dismantled after winning the Finals; Scottie Pippen was traded to the Houston Rockets, Dennis Rodman was released (and subsequently signed with the Los Angeles Lakers), Michael Jordan retired a second time, Phil Jackson's contract was not renewed, and Steve Kerr signed with the San Antonio Spurs (who won the NBA Championship at the end of the next season) via free agency. Does this mean the Bulls were NOT the Defending NBA Champions to start the lockout-shortened 1998-1999 season?

The 2012 Baltimore Ravens lost franchise mainstays Ray Lewis and Ed Reed via retirement and free agency respectively. Does that mean the Ravens were not the Defending Super Bowl Champions to start the 2013 season?

The same logic applies to Liu Kang.

He is a self proclaimed master troll, and I used to be annoyed by him as well lol. But you're right it's entertaining after a while, I can't hate on Trash anymore haha.

Hmm... I think Liu Kang is the Mortal Kombat Champion then, as in being the winner of the Mortal Kombat tournament... and Johnny Cage is the Earthrealm Champion, which is different.

So what happens if Liu Kang died as Champion. Does no one get to be Champion ever again? Obviously not, there simply won't be a defending Champion in the following tournament. Johnny Cage will not be defending Champion, but he will defeat Shinnok, which will make him Champion, and if there is a Mortal Kombat after the Netherrealm War, Johnny Cage would then be the defending Champion.

This is also possible.

Liu Kang still has a right to defend his title. That right is absolute.

And when he comes back from the dead, he can absolutely challenge Johnny Cage, and it will be a bout between two defending title champions.

This kind of thing doesn't tend to come up in real life too often... because in real life people don't come back from the dead.
