Hi everyone! Brand new on these boards, but have been playing Mortal Kombat since I was a little boy in Russia. I've been pondering on how the roster should come out to look like for months now, and the more that is revealed each day the more I think "wow Ed Boon is playing everyone." People think everything has been leaked, but how much do we really know? I feel there is one trump card up Boon's sleeve that is going to catch everyone off guard.

Let's just look at the selection screen and try to fill it out logically. We know there are 26 character spots, 1 unlockable tab, and 1 DLC tab.

First We have the usual suspects, the 25 that are either definitely or practically confirmed:

1. Raiden
2. Kung Lao
3. Scorpion
4. Sub Zero
5. Mileena
6. Johnny Cage
7. Reptile
8. Sektor
9. Cyrax
10. Nightwolf
11. Kitana
12. Noob Saibot
13. Jade
14. Sindel
15. Liu Kang
16. Kano
17. Stryker
18. Jax
19. Sonya
20. Baraka
21. Ermac
22. Shang Tsung
23. Kabal
24. Sheeva
25. Smoke

25 is nice, but who is 26?

Let's consider the two leaked unlockable character achievements:

26. Quan-Tease: Quan Chi
27. Cold Fusion: Cyber Sub Zero

This is usually where I see users put Quan Chi in the #26 spot. However, Quan Chi and Cyber Sub Zero both have the same type of achievement, therefore they are the same type of unlockable character, therefore they should both go to the same location when unlocked. Either they both show up in an empty character spot or they both go under the unlockable tab. Considering the first option would give us 27 squares in the selection screen, I see the latter option as the most likely.

So once again I beg the question, who is 26?

I believe it is Rain. And minor details revealed to us over these last several months have led me to this assumption.

1) The "You Found Me" secret achievement. It seems everyone has forgotten about these four secret achievements because it says "face in arcade mode" and not "unlock." But they can still give us valuable hints. I hear Rain was advertised with "Found Me" pictures prior to his reveal in another MK game. Also, if you know what I am talking about, "Rain can be found in the graveyard." Many say this achievement is reserved for Smoke or Jade, but "Hide and Seek" applies to either of them better.

2) The number 26 in itself. This is the exact sum of characters that had a character spot from MK1, MK2, and UMK3. 25 out of 26 are confirmed. Honestly, what are the odds that Boon would simply leave the 26th one out? Yes, he may have been a joke character originally. But Boon knows he has one of the biggest fanbases around, a good storyline, and a good moveset potential. It isn't like him being a joke character has kept Boon & crew from involving him heavily in almost every game after UMK3.

3) Let's say I'm wrong and he isn't 26. Look at the Gamepro Magazine leak about the 3 DLC characters. It doesn't matter who they are; what matters is that none of them are Rain. Boon has heard the insane amount public outcry about Rain. I highly doubt he would take the time to make playable a boss character, design a brand new character, and re-haul a post MK1-3 character over developing Rain for MK9. I find it harder to believe Rain is in DLC 2 over Rain is on the original disc.

Conclusion: Ed Boon & crew may have ruined the Human Smoke and Cyber Sub Zero surprise. But I really think they have outdone themselves with keeping Rain covered up and completely misleading everyone.

Why would they do that? Because Rain has undergone a complete re-haul and Boon would love to surprise all the Rain fans with it. Just look at the pattern; besides the 2 original ninjas, every ninja has undergone a complete re-haul in order to make them seem like anything but a palette swap. Reptile is a legitimate lizard now, complete with bird mask. Ermac has his green aura, trench coat, and bandages. Noob Saibot has really grown into his own identity (identities?) and is no longer just a black silhouette of a ninja shape. Do I even need to mention Smoke's hair?

Thoughts? Comments? If there is anything I missed regarding the roster feel free to spoil it for me. Hope to get to know you all better soon. :tee:

Nice post... will have to wait and see but I like the bit about "found me" and would seem a strong hint.. If not now then much later

I think you got the character select stuff wrong mind as you are not accounting for the bosses to be selectable in your theory either

but this should be in the spoioers sectiom even though you put spoilers in the title.
Also I hope you're right too and Rain is already in the game.

This is a good post. I think it is a very good chance that Rain is in the game to start with. Let's hope you're right!

I hope he is but the only thing that makes me think he isn't is the fact

that being said it's still possible the leaks aren't correct but I'd say it's a long shot at best.

Me too. And if not, remember NRS said something I think about giving everyone a free DLC character so that people who doesn't buy the paid DLC characters can download the data to their discs? May be Rain.

Unless one of the 3 DLC characters are the free ones.

And Kintaro had an engding and he is in the 3 DLC character leak, so the info leaked from the demo has changed or the DLC leak could be a hoax.

a) I totally agree with the You found me one, it instantly reminded me of 'Rain can be found in the graveyard', plus, with the leaked Smoke images I doubt he's secret and unlocked, he must be in the select screen
b) disagree there, I think boon doesn't like Rain so much indeed and he could leave him out :P
c) agree there, I believe he's in too :D
d) again, idk about that.. I think Rain was re-designed already and planned to be the first DLC character but they heard us all asking for him so they decided to put him in the game instead and leave out a certain cough *boss* cough out instead since someone said that certain character is already in the initial game..

as for the story, I'm pretty sure he isn't relevant due to d) and if he's in now, they'll make him fit somehow I guess

Did you guys forget all about that tweet where Boon asked who should be the first DLC character and that he specifically included Rain, but not Quan Chi?

since that tweet he's been getting a huge load of tweets from fans wanting Rain to hit the initial roster. not to mention, all people say boon is not to be trusted so he could be messing with us back then (I doubt it though, I think Rain was SUPPOSED to be DLC but will hit the roster initially now). and then there's the you found me achievement that matches him.. now that magazine with the 3 DLC characters.. so yeah, we gotta wait and see I guess

Let me help your argument and let you know that at 5.20 of this video Boon flat out says "more obscure characters like the Rains will be DLC." This is your proof right here that I am wrong ..if you take anything Boon ever says as proof. If anyone has followed Mortal Kombat long enough, they know what I mean when I say Boon denying the inclusion of Rain means just about as much as anyone on this thread denying the inclusion of Rain.

When I say Boon has been misleading us, that type of tweet you posted is exactly what I mean. Speaking of tweets, he has posted Prince lyrics, a link to Guns N' Roses' November Rain, and a link to a website of Rain noises. To me, that doesn't sound like something one would do if one mistakenly left a character out that people are demanding. I don't think Boon would rub it in our faces. To me, that sounds like something one would do if one secretly left that character in and is too excited about the nice surprise the character's fans have in store when they turn on the game.

Interesting, I really hope this is the case. AS for the leaked DLC, Hektor confirmed it was wrong, so Rain could still be in it.

^^^ on that topic, he also started to reply to fans asking in tweets about Rain and even though in that itnerview he said we'll get 'the rains' as DLC, he never replied to anyone with strictly 'no, Rain is DLC, I said that in the X interview on the X channel on the X date'. I really believe he's in and I sooooooooooooo wanna get all.. immature and be like IN YOUR FACES to those that are like 'Rain is DEFINITELY not in' when they reveal him :P well I guess if that doesn't happen they can respectively be like in your face towards me.. but yeah :P

Btw... Ed Boon never straight out lies. He may bend the truth or omit information, but he doesn't straight out lie. I"m not even going to argue my point because there are many threads that show that Rain most likely won't be in game... not to mention, more recent news about the DLC article.

I completely respect that, and I'd have no right argue with you for all we have right now is speculation. I just want to point out I never said Boon straight out lied. I respect the man too much to call him a liar. However, he does have a tendency to mislead, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. In Rain's case, it would be a great thing.
