Has the Internet and Social Media killed the MK surprise factor?

Seems like Boon and co showed us mostly everything up front prior to the release (thinking specifically of the roster, boss and unlockable - unless there are more they've kept expertly hidden). In fact, it was almost subversive, given we all thought there was no way Shinnok could be the boss and unlockable given he was revealed far prior to release, even though it was staring us all right in the face. Could this have been a result of the current climate where nothing stars secretive for very long? Did Boon capitulate due to the inevitability that most would be leaked prior to release anyways, so why not control the reveals by showing (almost) everything the game has to offer prior to release? Or do you think there will still be secrets to be found once the game comes out?

A secondary question, does it irk you that everything is leaked before hand, or does it only heighten your anticipation for the game?

And lastly (and pardon if this is a terrible question as I have no technical knowledge), is it possible to hold things back on the initial shipments, and then release a patch on the first day that must be downloaded that would insert the secrets (such as an unlockable character or stage) as a way of countering potential pre-release leaks?

I thought that was obvious. The fact that you can get all info you need by googling it should make it a given.

I'm personally a fan of spoilers though, it doesn't ruin anything for me. After having seen most of everything due to others leaking it on the internet, I'm more excited to get the game than ever before! I can't wait to try it all out by myself next Tuesday. ^^

People who don't know how to show common courtesy are what ruin the surprise factor.

Nope. It been like this since the early 2000's when MKDA was coming out and when the Internet started to become more popular houses. MK will still sell no matter what gets leak out there.

MK is really the only franchise that I love where I learn so much about the game pre-release, but that's really only because of being so active on this forum. For other series that I love like GTA, Resident Evil, etc, I keep myself mostly in the dark until the game hits store shelves.

The game doesn't come out until next Tuesday, can't really just decide to stay off the forum for that long, it's just pretty lame to me that I would have to do that in order to keep the game completely fresh. So I kinda just accept it, and move on.

I really enjoyed the MK9 story mode because it felt truly epic; I hadn't played a MK game in years when I tried it, and so it brought all the MK1-3 memories back to me, along with new characters like Quan Chi, who I thought was awesome.

In hindsight, I wish I'd just pre-ordered MKX and not bothered trying to find out anything about it. I have more or less ruined the story mode for myself by reading so many spoilers, assuming the end boss was Havik, and hoping that the likes of Rain (one of my MK9 faves) and Fujin were playable. None of this is the case, of course.

It's all my own fault because I cannot resist reading spoilers or watching streams, so whilst I'll still enjoy the game, none of the magic will be there. For me, Cyber Sub-Zero was a genuine surprise because I hadn't heard anything about it beforehand and I of course remembered Smoke being the cyborg in MK3, so that was a nice twist. I'll always have fond memories of the MK9 story, but now probably less so for MKX, even if objectively it may be a better story. Mind you, I haven't seen it all through yet, just chapters 1 - 3, but I know the ending and several key plot spoilers, so...

I will say this, though: those people who fabricate 'spoilers' simply for attention are total c**ts.

This. I'm one of those types of people myself. I don't mind seeing everything though I'd prefer to keep the actual story under wraps, the only exception.

Interesting. For me, I really don't care too much about the story, but enjoy being surprised by things like fatalities, secret characters/stages, etc. I feel that era is long gone, unless you manage to stay away from anything online and video game related.

That said, no one has answered my third question. Is such a thing naive, is it possible, has it been done before, etc?

MK's story isn't the hook so I'm okay with it.

The hype machine is more important in the grand scheme of things I'm sure. In the last 3 weeks I went from going to play it to a preorder on the GameStop special edition.

So I guess I'm an example of it working.

Yes bc ppl on social sites posted it and No bc we looked at it!

You don't have to look at spoilers. Its up to you if you want things spoiled for you.

/thread

I feel as if it isn't as simple as this. Inevitably, something will come up on a forum in a non-spoiler part, on one of your social media walls, in the comment section of a relatively innocuous/unrelated article, etc. I remember I was reading The Walking Dead comic, and ran into a major spoiler in a Game of Thrones thread. To make it worse, I had only three more issues to go before I was caught up.

I don't mind spoilers, I mean I wanted to see the story. I still going to enjoy it and have fun, hell if anything it makes me want to play more. The only thing I hate about spoilers is if I'm watching a livestream about gameplay and people put spoilers in there like that's wrong!

the hype definitely hasn't been hurt IMO. only the hardcore MK fans even keep up with every single thing that leaks.

Yeah, the internet has killed MK's surprise factor for sure. No denying that. I wish I had it in me to NOT look at spoilers, but I have little self control. That being said, though... I am getting better. With MK9, literally everything was spoiled for me. With MKX, I know who the final boss is, I've seen only four chapters of story mode and I know of at least two or three deaths. There's still a lot for me to experience and hopefully I don't cave before release day.

The internet is a landmine for spoilers if want to look for it. At the same time, you don't have look at the contents if you have self control. When MK9's story mode script was leaked, I simply didn't bother reading it.

I'm mostly interested whose in the roster, their costumes/appearances, and anything gameplay related.
