liu kang role?

What if all of the revenants' souls were tainted somewhere along their lives?

For example; Liu Kang trying to kill Raiden = Tainted.

Kitana doing all her evil deeds for Shao Kahn before finding out the truth = Tainted.

Kung Lao being deceitful and trying to one up Liu Kang = Tainted.

Which is why they all went to the Netherrealm for Quan Chi to revive.

Yeah, but that sets a pretty low bar for being tainted, doesn't it? Kenshi's tainted because he's a bad father and got Takeda's mother killed, Johnny Cage is tainted because he's a vain, self-absorbed actor, Sonya Blade is tainted because she's more a drill sergeant than a mother...

The word "tainted" loses all meaning. Do we know for sure that Yellow Ledbetter's explanation that the fighters' souls went to the Netherrealm because they were tainted is canon?

Oh, Kitana would be sent to the Netherrealm either way, with all she's done in her lifetime, all the people she killed. There will always be a certain darkness in her heart, no matter if she switched sides and freed her realm. I don't think she would be able to redeem herself no matter what.

Exactly, when she dies, she will go to the Netherrealm.

Nightwolf knows how to do that (purify soul), but it's not only by regreting.

Hey, I didn't create the bar, I'm just going along with it so that we get a plausible explanation :P.

For exemple, Ashrah thinks she will get out of the Netherrealm by killing demons with her sword, because her soul will be so pure that it will be expelled from hell.

As Shujinko couldn't enter there without having his soul tainted. Sub-Zero, on Mythologies, could enter there because his soul was evil (it's even a theme in the game).

Even Takeda, recently, was going to the Netherrealm (trained with Shiray Ryu, killed Fox, tried to kill Raiden).

Well, if the choice is between NRS using minor character quirks to explain why good guys go to Hell, or just saying "in the new lore all fighters go to Hell because fighting itself is evil," I'd much rather the latter. They're both dumb, but a universal rule like that is at least easy to apply consistently and doesn't reek of arbitrary, artificial storytelling.

This still leaves us in a very dangerous place, though, if Quan Chi is simply going to keep having access to powerful fighters' souls basically any time he needs them. I mean, he had to go to the trouble of manipulating Scorpion to gain his service. Why bother, if he can just (apparently) twist their souls and turn them into Revenants ezpz? Even if NRS's writers don't choose to repeat themselves with MK11 by pulling the same revenant/resurrection switcheroo, the fact that nothing actually prevents them from doing it is pretty awful.

pls mkx have explanations

If we follow Mythologies storyline, he didn't manipulate Scorpion just to have him as a revenant. That was a bonus.

He sent two warriors who would eventually fight and one would die anyway, knowing that he probably promised to both clans he would slay the other.

He did that to conserve the mission, but beyond that, having a personal assassin just because.

Both would go to the Netherrealm, since they were thiefs and assassins.

Then he lied to Scorpion saying Sub-Zero was guilty of something he didn't do because he is the big a-hole of the series. He has fun toying with people, he is a demon.

I don't think there's a mess here guys. Quan Chi tells Raiden that 'their souls are already mine. Shao Khan's payment for Netherrealm's allegiance.' Given how little we actually know about how the afterlife works in the MKverse, I don't think we need to get into the mechanics of how Shao Khan managed to lasso the heroes' souls before they went to wherever they would naturally go. He's Shao Khan, conqueror of worlds! Magic!

Let me put this in perspective for you.

Dragonball Z had a more worked out system for what happens when characters die than Mortal Kombat does right now. Back in 1990. Two years before the first Mortal Kombat game came out.

Dragonball Z.

I see as I said before, Shao Kahn was stealing everybody's soul into his soulnados. As payment for Quan Chi's services, he allowed the sorcerer to take the souls of those warriors.

Shao Kahn doesn't catch souls to resurrect. He kollects them to himself.

Quan Chi probably asked because he knew that Shao Kahn could be punished and he would have the best warriors (since it wasn't only Earthrrealm, but Outworld too, and he already had Scorpion and Noob Saibot) to invade all realms with Shinnok.

It was like Shao Kahn did with Kotal Kahn. He killed everybody, then said "oooh, you are all so kind, you can keep this stone". But the stone was already theirs.

Don't undermine Dragonball Z. Believe me, I am no fan of that anime, but there's a reason it's so popular.

Oh, you don't have to tell me. I watched it every night when I was in its target demographic. But, y'know, then after a while I wasn't 12 anymore...

Whatever can be said for it, it's not very sophisticated storytelling, and I hope that NRS can do a little bit better with the resurrection mumbojumbo. I wasn't up in arms when they started bringing everyone back, I'm just saying that I hope there is a concrete plan here on how to deal with the fallout of that decision.

I like how meticulous you are with this. Plot holes like the ones caused by MK's afterlife bother me too, but ultimately I've come to accept that whoever is at the reigns of this franchise's narrative does not have the same fondness for consistency that I do. I agree it's a shame because the story and characters are what I love about the franchise.

Eastern mysticism clashing with 'Murica F*** YEAH makes for a compelling tale and, as graphical fidelity catches up with the studio's imagination/ambition, it would be nice to think that some of the older glossed-over plot points would get a revamp that makes a bit more sense. For example, I've always found the whole 'Netherrealm is a place for evil beings' and used to be run by Lucifer to be... bothersome. I'd like biblical dogma to stay out of my cyber ninja kung fu-fest thanks.

That said, maybe we've just got to satisfy ourselves that a story about a battle-weary multiverse full of gods and cyber ninjas can only have so much logic.

What if Liu Kng and Kung Lao are the new Deadly Alliance and seek out the Dragon Army and such to be the new protectors of earth since they believe Raiden has fallen or whatever.

So, with Johnny Cage being Raiden's champion now, where does that leave Liu? Do you think Johnny Cage will be referred to as Raiden's champ through out the story?

I really think Johnny Cage will be the new champ even after Shinnok, I see it as Johnny Cage vs Liu Kang and possibly Kung Lao. They are hyping Cage up as the main character and champion of Earth realm. I mean come on HERE'S JOHNYY!!!!!! Gave it right away for me.

People tend to forget that it is a fighting game after all. Every other article I read about MKX stated that story in figting games were usually undeveloped and MK 2011 and Injustice raised the bar. But first and foremost for themselves. You can't see a trend that every figting game suddenly goes for an epic, cinematic campaign event. For a fighting game, MK has a rich loir and as we could see, it sometimes can shackle the whole thing. In the 3D era they had to raise the bar so far until it was a great mess.

Now they rebooted the whole franchise but they decided against only recycling old storylines, so they went for this 25 years later - the dawn of a new generation thing. That's a good idea, but Boon already said at Gamescom last year that it's hard to continue from here. They retconned the oroginal storyline, then did a time jump so what's next? Alternate universes like Injustice? Nah, I don't think so.

Since majority of the roster aged now and they have to rely on the new kombatants, they took risk, big time. And it is a fighting game after all. If ever there will be another installment, petition-ready hardcore fans will want to have old favorites back and also new faces. To have fun, do bone-crushing X-Rays, pummel faces with brutalities, etc. Story is fun in MK but if gameplay sucks then I'm not interested in story either. I didn't even play story mode for a year after MKKE was released. So for me, fighting mechanism and gameplay always come first.

Remember it's a passing of the torch..I expect to see TAKEDA save the world

"Hereeeee's JOHNNY!!!!"
To please the feminists who complain about the treatment of females in the game and how they dress, have cassie save the world.
have some good media for once.
then in mk11 kill her first scene with takeda turning wraith.
