[MENTION=5028]Commander[/MENTION], there's no way you can draw up that conclusion that MK9 was retconned just because two "dead" characters return and because of a few intro lines.
We already know that Quan Chi WILL have dead Earthrealm Warriors at his command (confirmed by Himmerick) and if you wanna go by intro dialogue, it really looks like Kitana wants revenge on Quan Chi, possibly due to the events of MK9. Don't panic, we will find out everything soon enough.

I base it on the fact that Kung Lao was under Quan Chis control at the end of MK9, and perhaps he still is, therefore we do not know the context of their meeting.

Steve Beran said that the reason that they killed off the characters in MK9 was to "clean the slate" and make room for new characters, and you'd know that if you actually paid attention to all the MKX interviews, which apparently you didn't.
NRS and Beran are to blame for making such a claim.
Fail troll job.
Quan Chi was in MK9 and counts as an MK9 character, and you know that.

They did clean the slate for the majority of the dead characters. I almost guarantee they will NOT bring back the likes of Sindel, Jade, Stryker, Nightwolf, Noob, Cyber Subzero, Shang Tsung, Kabal, Jax and one or two of the Cyborgs.

It was not a troll job. Quan Chi was created AFTER MK3 and is thus a post-MK3 character. MK9... notice the 9, as in a number coming AFTER 3...
2 returning dead characters do not mean that there won't be room for more new characters. No, you're just being sour at the moment and are taking it out on everyone else. Maybe you should take a break and come back after you've cooled down.

True, but with everyone wanting MKX to be MK9.5, the roster doesn't look too promising.

MK9 is actually just called Mortal Kombat and it's a reboot that is on a different timeline.
By post-MK3, people are usually talking about after the original MK3.
As in, not in the reboot of MK1, MKII & MK3 (aka Mortal Komabt 2011).

I'm still incredibly disappointed with the 'Kollector's Edition' Strategy Guide they released for MK2011. Cover looks so great, to bad what was inside sucked.

With Kitana and Kung Lao back, you can't guarantee anything.
I can spin that around too and also make an empty claim like that, and say something which may be false, like "I almost guarantee that NRS went back on their word and WILL bring back the likes of Sindel, Jax, Jade, Stryker, Nightwolf, Noob, Cyber Sub-Zero, Shang Tsung, Kabal Jax and the 2 cyborgs."
I have just as much guarantee that any of those characters will be back as you have of the claim that they won't be back.

Kitana has a nice steampunk vibe going, and her face and hairstyle are totally feminine which I dig. Totally hot. I wish they do similar with Mileena, only less clothing of course.

I'm with Commander on this one.
I do think Kitana and Kung Lao look incredibly well designed and I am hyped for them, but over the past few weeks, the game is losing me a little. This was an opportunity to showcase some of underdeveloped characters that have a lot of potential who survived MK 9 (Scarlet, Rain) but most importantly, it was a great opportunity to re-invent some of the Post MK 3 characters (Tanya, Shinnok Hotaru, Kai, Havik, Ashrah, Reiko). With the comic revealing that the game is skipping the Netherrealm war, likely, it makes me wary of the chances for some of these characters. Lastly, while we have some idea of what other new characters are coming to this game, thanks to spoilers, I cannot help but feel there should be more. I feel spoiled by D'Vorah and Kotal Kahn: both are very well-received by the community, well-designed and have seemingly interesting stories. It makes me excited to see what else they can do.

okay so we can basically write off boot number 4 as belonging to Kitana
now how i feel about the trailer
this has me a way more hyped now. Kitana's design is easily eons above her MK9 costumes, she looks like a royal assassin (lets hope they also fixed her jawline) i'm still a little bummed that we got another "dead" character revealed but at this point it really doesn't matter to me si we got to see both Kitana and Kung Lao in action (briefly) and a load of new stages which has me incredibly excited.
speaking of new stages here is my guess on what some of them are.
first one with Raiden and Kung Lao looks like a ruined district in China evident by the broken sign you see behind Raiden and the hanging paper lanterns.
the level where Kung Lao is doing what i believe is a his win animation looks like it could be a re imagined Portal not too sure
the raining level that showed D'vorah looks like a reimagined Sky Temple or a successor to it
the level with the two coffins. i'm going out on a limb and saying that this could be the Shirai Ryu Temple after everyone got killed AGAIN.
and the last level where Kung Lao is about to kill Quan Chi looks like it's in the netherrealm, judging by the pillar of skulls you could see in the background
