Cross Gen + Unreal Engine 3 = I Think I'll Pass On This One

As an admitted graphics buff and tech head. I can't really get excited for this game. When next gen consoles come around I normally get excited because of all the new graphical and technical bells and whistles.

However with the announcement of this game being cross gen and using the ever ageing UNR3 and with the almost decade old consoles holding back the graphics what's going to stop this game looking like MK9 @ 1080p on the PC on the Next Gen consoles.

I also feel for a 2015 game that isn't a yearly title like COD, Fifa or NFS this title should of been Next Gen Only like AC: Unity and Batman Arkham Knight.

As a fan of the series I'm not dumping on MK as a series I'm just going to gracefully sit this one out

I disagree. MK doesn't always need new consoles to be a great new installment to the series. It depends at what point in time we are and if MK is in danger of becoming to dated as a result of using last gen machines. At the moment there's no danger of that, next gen has only just started. This also means that many more fans get access to the game. Hooray for poor people!!!
 
No it's unreal 3 360 and ps3 can't handle unreal 4. An it's confirmed for both.

An that's stupid, so you're not gonna get it because it's coming out on last and current gen? What awesome logic.
 
I stopped buying into the next-gen hype a long time ago. The new consoles have yet to offer a good selection of games, and if it persists by the time MKX is released, I'll just get the PS3 version. I might as well spend my hard-earned money elsewhere.

As far as presentation is concerned, I'm more interested in what the artists can do given their limitations rather than how many polygons a model has.

So basically this answers the most vital question for me in terms of whether to get this on next gen or current gen, in terms of gameplay. Considering they're both going to be running on the same engine, I assume that the gameplay will be identical. Now the dealbreaker for me on whether to get it for current gen, or splash the cash on a next gen console, is going to be the Kontent that is being offered. If its the same stuff for both generations, then I'm definitely not buying an Xbox One just yet.

People are so selfish.
I'm tired of the "Screw the majority who don't have next-gen consoles, as long as I get it on my console." mentality.
More people playing MK on more consoles =/= a bad thing.
Also, at the beginning of every console cycle, games are expected to be cross-platform for the first couple of years, given that everyone doesn't go out and rush to blindly buy a next-gen console.

Not buying a game because it's cross-gen could also mean missing out on a great game.
Oh, well.
Their loss.
 
The graphics in MKX will look good, but not really amazing. I figure this because they had to resort to CG for the trailer and it's going to be on old-gen consoles.
 
Obviously, graphics will be better than MK9, that's all i need. Now, the question is what difference in kontent PS3 & PS4 versions will have and what lineup in general PS4 will have after E3.

Right now i will go with Wii U buy (because i love platformers) instead of PS4, so i will get MKX on PS3...waiting for E3 to change my mind.
 
lol I love everyone crying about lack of next gen games.

When you only have 1million people buy Next gen consoles, and the other 10+million people still sitting on Last Gen.

Every company with even the slightest bit of smarts would make it Cross-gen to make sure they get the sales.

what sounds better to you, 1million sales? or 5million sales?

Not saying those will be the EXACT numbers but I hardly blame game companies to do what they're doing. Until more next-gen consoles are sold, all the companies will be taking the safe route.

what Microsoft and Sony should do. Is quit being es and fork up some money on a cross platform (Being Xbone and Ps4) big hitter, to be Exclusive to the Next-Gen. But they will never work together like that.
 
As long as all the time and attention is put into the current gen version im fine with it. Then just downgrade the crap out of it for last gen

You sir are correct, as a company that is exactly what they are thinking. They will make so much more money off of it this way…. I bet you pre order exclusives will be different on each version as well. I know I will be picking up a copy for both ps3 and ps4 so I can play it against all my PSN friends.
 
I think MK9 looked just fine on all stages but looked better on darker stages. Sub-Zero costum 2 alt color on Shang Tsung's Cardens (Night) is probably my favorite.

Something I want to clarify the REASON I don't like cross gen games for the most part is because game developers usually develop a game that is cross gen to the lowest common denominator meaning they build the game to run on last gen consoles FIRST then they up-scale the textures, resolution and so on for the next gen versions. This is much different to building the foundation of your game to run on new consoles FIRST/EXCLUSIVELY which have GPU's with brand new architecture (GCN)

The only time where I don't mind cross gen is:

1) When two different studios work on each version separately eg: Sonic Unleashed Forza Horizon 2

2) The devs build two versions from the ground up completely independently (90% of the time this doesn't happen because of time and money)

I agree. The PAST gen version should be the ugly friend with no body. It should receive as little attention as possible. I understand the economic reason for releasing it on the last gen but I think it's kinda selfish to expect NRS to shine it up for you. The OP has a point, this game should be running on the Unreal 4 engine.

It honestly just makes sense to do it this way. We're not selfish for asking for a complete game on the current gen. Developers know that it takes time for gamers to jump into next gen consoles.

This is why they market certain, uber popular games as next gen exclusive because they know it'll sell due to its popularity, such as Batman Arkham Knight. Or they release certain games that have a big fan base as next gen because it'll push people to buy next gen consoles. An example of that being EA Sports UFC, because of the huge North American/Brazilian/European/Japanese market that is into Mixed Martial Arts.

Mortal Kombat isn't at that level yet, and evidence of this model has also been shown by EA, they made the World Cup game exclusively for current gen consoles, even though they released FIFA 14 for next gen, because they know the demographics involved. Mortal Kombat doesn't have the hype to make casuals want to jump over to next gen solely for that game's purpose. It is way too early in the next gen consoles' life cycle.
 
Exactly. I could understand if it was 4 years for the current gen to have been out but 2? Come on their are still a shit ton of people that don't have next gen stuff yet. You call them selfish yet you want it for your next gen console to seemingly vindicate your purchase because the games simply aren't there for you guys yet. That's not out fault you guys jumped as soon as it was out knowing that it wouldn't have a huge library of games yet.
 
You never know with which generation they catered to more though. Battlefield was built for the power of the pc first and scaled down for the ps3 and 360. It had the same engine as well. Also, keep in mind that Arkham Knight is also a modified version of the unreal engine 3, so there's still a lot they can do with it graphically. As someone who has an xbox one, it is disappointing that it isn't next gen only so I know it isn't held back. I can understand from a business perspective though and I'm sure its going to be a great game regardless of graphics so I'm psyched.
