Cross Gen + Unreal Engine 3 = I Think I'll Pass On This One

Exactly. I could understand if it was 4 years for the current gen to have been out but 2? Come on their are still a shit ton of people that don't have next gen stuff yet. You call them selfish yet you want it for your next gen console to seemingly vindicate your purchase because the games simply aren't there for you guys yet. That's not out fault you guys jumped as soon as it was out knowing that it wouldn't have a huge library of games yet.

Alright, so why do you keep saying that this gen has been out 2 years? Didn't the xbone and ps4 just come out this past holiday season? Whatchu talkin' bout?
 
Not getting a game because of the engine they're using or that it's cross-gen is pretty stupid. Batman: Arkham Knight is also running on a modified version of UE3 and so far the only game that comes close to its visuals is Evolve which runs on CryEngine. I can't wait to see how MK looks on next gen, and I expect it to be as mind blowing as MK9 was.

Arkham Knight is also only on new-gen consoles though. So they can push their modified version of UE3 to the max, old consoles be damned. Completely different story with MKX being cross-gen.
 
Also, I'll try chiming in again and see if I can shed some light on the points people are trying to get across. Not trying to speak for anyone so don't get your undies in a bunch if I'm off base for some views. This is just how I see it right now.

First off, I don't think anyone is being selfish so there's really no need to keep throwing that word around. We're all big MK fans and IMO it's clear why there are two sides to this discussion. We all just want MKX to knock it out of the park!

1) New-gen only: Want the game to be the absolute best it can be and really shine on the new-gen consoles, being the definitive new-gen fighting game, completely blowing the competition out of the water.

2) Cross-gen: You guys don't mind it coming to more platforms because more platforms = better exposure. This will let MKX reach as many people as possible thus, making the money it needs to, and securing MK continued success spawning more sequels.

MK is my favorite fighting game (IMO the best fighting game) and I feel it deserves the best treatment possible. This is why I was really hoping for it to be new-gen only!

Most of you assume it's just a graphics thing. Yes higher poly counts and more animation variations are nice but I see this as limiting gameplay as well. Who knows what kind of limitations the old consoles are imposing on the new-gen versions.

Using Arkham Knight as a perfect example. Rocksteady has said the game is new-gen only because of the Batmobile. The way they wanted to modify and enhance the gameplay via the Batmobile just wouldn't be possible on old hardware.

Are any of you that don’t mind the cross-gen aspect not even the least bit bummed this game was not made from the ground up for the new-gen consoles? I don't even have a PS4 yet, but I am disappointed MKX isn't being made from ground up to make the most of the new-gen consoles.

But I do have to say, all this discussion could be rendered moot by E3. I'm hoping those of us a bit disappointed by the cross-gen announcement will be silenced by what NRS will have on display at E3 next week!

Yah look Im goin to agree, this is bull shit....Let the old systems die...I mean this is a BIG DEAL it is not mk9 or 3 or 4 or 7 its 10!!

the 10th installment...it HAS to be worth it...and I just dont see how its goin to be a an amazing revolutionary thing....yet again being on old gen with unreal 3?!?! when boon said he would not do a new mk less it was next gen on unreal 4....I mean how is this goin to look any better then a shitty reskinnend mk9? And by the trailer...this is what i have always wanted mk to look like...DARK gritty an serious...the tone from the trailer alone....shows that, a tone mk has lost since part 2....the game since then has been a bright colours cartoonish joke filled with wayy to much humor an rubbish....so the game finally looks like it has taken its right path in terms of tone look an design...and its unreal 3 cross gen?!?! What is even the point then? Its just goin to look like shitty injustice or mk9?!? it just seems so pointless...I fail to see how the game will look any thing like the trailer hearing this... Its really disappointing... ONly thing i can pray for is that the make a port for old gen..an it just looks liks shit in comparisson..but i mean...why?!?!
 
Next week we will actually get to see some game play @ E3, I'm hoping it's live gameplay and that we get to see it on the ps4 :)

There's still some hope for those of us who wanted a new-gen only game Spader.

This is pure, pure speculation on my part but in this news post by Patrick:

He states "Warner Bros. also confirmed the Amazon leaks that the game is being developed for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Next-Generation consoles by NetherRealm Studios. Additionally if you don't have one of the new consoles the game will also be ported to Windows PC as well as previous generation consoles Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3."

He's very specific to mention the game will be "ported" to PC and the previous-gen consoles. Like I said, pure speculation on my part but this could mean that NRS is going full tilt on the new-gen versions and some other studio is doing the port to the other platforms.

Also another glimmer of hope is in the press release, WB has a quote from Boon claiming "an all new graphics engine".

Now it's been confirmed MKX is using the heavily modified Unreal Engine 3 NRS has used for both Injustice and MK2011. But that is the game engine. The graphics engine is just another layer within the UE3 game engine. What this (hopefully) means is that NRS can completely pimp out the lighting, particle systems etc. to take advantage of the new-gen hardware.

Trust me when I say a lighting system can go a long way to making a game look a lot better. MK2011 and Injustice's lighting system was pretty bad (IMO) and I'm hoping NRS overhauled their whole lighting process to work wonders for the new game. Lighting can go so far to improve the look of a game that I would say they could even use the same poly count for their characters (roughly 20,000) and it could still look far superior on the new-gen systems. Though I would imagine they're still going to use higher-res models on the newer platforms.

Is it E3 yet? ;P

Aside from presentation, fighting games have not fundamentally changed that much over the years.

THIS!!! I want to see it running off of PS4 dev tools! None of this "PC with specs designed to mimic new-gen hardware" bullshit that some devs pull! I want to see it running in realtime, on PS4 with multiple demonstrations if there's dynamic level interactions and such.

Try telling that to the MK team. MK3 introduced the run button and "dial-a-combos".

MK4 tried weapons unsheathed via button commands that could then be dropped and picked up by your opponent, as well as environmental weapons. MK3 couldn't have done that. They barely had enough memory to fit all the palette swaps in.

DA tried gameplay mechanics involving the super easy switching of multiple fighting styles per character, including weapons and allowed you to unleash combos branching across all your available styles. Also, they toyed with long-term damage effects with weapon impalement. Again probably not enough memory to fit multiple fighting styles per character in MK4.

Deception introduced instant-death environmental hazards, multi-tiered stages and Power Weapons that could be picked up in the arena to use against your opponent.

Armageddon had Create-a-Fatality and Air-Kombat.

MK vs DCU had Free-Fall-Kombat, Close-Kombat, smashing through buildings smashing buttons to see who the victor would be.

The MK team has always tried to evolve and change the gameplay mechanics with more powerful hardware. Just one more reason I love the franchise! You may not have liked some or all of the changes I listed above being added to the MK formula but they definitely made changes to the gameplay and made you think about how you approached fights differently from the previous game. Who's to say if some cool new feature is being left out of MKX because the older consoles don't have the memory or the pure graphical horsepower to pull it off?

And take this with a grain of salt because I hope I'm wrong and MKX is still amazing. But that's what sucks about it being cross-gen. There will always be a lingering question of, no matter how good MKX is, did they have to cut corners to make it run on the older hardware?

Most of the things you mentioned had nothing to do with taking advantage of the console's hardware.

Stances have been around since early 3D fighting games like Virtua Fighter, Tekken, and Bushido Blade...these games are older than MK:DA, and yet you are telling me they couldn't do that stuff back then?

Bleeding, poison, and other status effects that sap away health has been a part of video games for a long time. If games from 16-bit consoles can handle it, impaling in MKDA is not such a huge technical feat.

Instant-death evironmental hazards? It's essentially a glorified ring out that been seen since the original Virtua Fighter.

Klose Kombat in MK vs DC is a variation of a grappling state seen in wrestling and some fighting games. Free-Fall isn't much different once you take away the visuals.

Just because MK underwent several gameplay changes, it does not necessarily mean they are taking advantage of new technology. MK9 more or less went back to the basics, and it was proabably the best decision they made.

You're assuming that right at the beginning devs are going to be able to push the boundries of next gen machines so far that the game will look mind blowing compared to last gen. It's not going to be that fantastic while they're still learning what they can do with the new hardware. Take a look at PS3 early vs. late games for example. You'd still not have the game you want in your fantasy.

The point is that many people get to play the game which I'm very happy about.

At this point it's not just next gen owners who deserve a new MK.

Edit, why should I have to get a PS4 for one awesome game when what offered atm is weak? Maybe WB realize this, maybe not. The timing is wrong for next gen only. I'm over the flippin' moon!:)

Anyway, I don't care for graphics that much. All I care for is the gameplay, so it doesn't really matter to me what engine it's on; I just want to see some interesting new gameplay features, like unique air moves or something.
