Modern Rap.

Rap today is terrible. The mainstream music listeners won't listen to good artists that exist these days like Kendrick, ASAP, etc. because they're so used to Young Money artist spitting random garbage in a song that makes no sense and all of a sudden becomes a hit record because "it goes hard". Rap died in my opinion when the South was being shoved down our throats.

Even though it's not a positive message, hardcore rap isn't even that credible these days when you got people like Officer Ricky talking about drug dealing. I mean, how the hell can you take that shit seriously?

Rappers these days are all about making money and selling out to the mainstream. Classic examples are Pitbull, Nicki Minaj, and whoever else that uses House or Dubstep beats in their songs. Just because those genres are in, doesn't mean they're yours. Stop tarnishing my favourite genre of music by putting your ugly voices on it. In turn, they make DJ's sell out the House genre, prime example being David Guetta.

Bottom line, music in general isn't what it is. It's all about being pop stars and making that money as opposed to staying true to the genre.

Sucks that rap isn't like this anymore.

No long ass choruses, clever lyrics and hardcore delivery.
Rappers nowadays sounds like they're reading their shit off of their phones >.>

Clearly haven't been listening to Tyler The Creator.

That Southpark shock value rap doesn't do it for me.

There's still great rap out there. It's like Cube said "It's like a Treasure Hunt right now..."

Here's one, y'all might hate on him because of "Ridin' Dirty" but even he cracks on it in his songs from time to time. It was an album whatyagonna do. His mixtapes is where spits some raw shit. Here's a good song off of Mixtape Messiah 3 a few years ago.

I'd look up the lyrics if you can, just for some of y'all who can't keep up n sht.

He also has a shit ton of monster freestyles. And they're off the dome too. No bullshit.

Godammit, bbblp I love you for this. I can totally get into rap like AsapRocky, and Lil B even.. But it's just like Tyler is trying too hard to 'shock' people. Can't stand that.
But no offense to you McGriff. You've always been one of my favorites on here. Wish you'd post more tbh.

Honestly though, mainstream rap isn't as bad as it used to be in like the late 00s

No more stupid "crank dat/booty dew/stanky leg/jerk" club shit

And while they're no Wu Tang or Pac or anyone along those lines, there are some rappers now like Big Sean and J Cole that at least spit some actual thoughtful lyrics

*sigh* Alright yo, put on your seatbelts and get your notepads ready.

First off, "rap" is a verb. An action. The genre is hip-hop. Yes from Tupac to Drake. All considered hip-hop. I don't care about the subgenres ("gangsta rap", "political rap", etc.) in the end it's all hip-hop.

Since we got that out of the way, let's begin.

Hip-hop is the way it is nowadays simply because times have changed. No one wants to hear about being "gangsta" anymore because that shit in all honesty, is CORNY AS ****. Seriously, minus a couple of classic hits from artists like Dre, NWA, DMX, etc, that tough guy "gangsta" shit is corny. Back in the day it was dope because it was edgy, it was something new. It got played out. Just like all this new stuff will.

This era now (mainstream wise) is all about the partying. The girls, the sex, the money, the clubs, the cars, the mansions. It's what's hot right now. I'm not gonna lie, when certain songs come on the radio while me and my friends are in the car, we rock the hell out. Seriously, if you take most mainstream songs and dissect them to look for content, you're an idiot. Plain and simple. They're fun, they're great for parties, kickbacks, and clubs, but they are NOT something you can listen to and say, "Wow, you know what, Waka Flaka has a point here! What an interesting point of view!".

The TRUE hip-hop heads are the ones who can listen to a song, enjoy it for what it is, and move on. I love Lil B, but I also love Blu, who is one of the most thought provoking emcees the hip-hop game has ever seen. I have the ability to listen to a Lil B song, rock out and dance to it, and a minute later put on an old school CL Smooth joint and enjoy it.

So long story short, if you try to look for substance where there shouldn't be any, you're asking for disappointment. Most (dumb) people don't realize there's music outside of what the radio plays. That's their own damn fault. Which is why I hate when people bag on "rap" because all they hear is Lil Wayne. Well shit, you're kind of asking for it. (By the way I personally don't hate Lil Wayne, he has some dope shit.)

P.S. Tupac and Biggie are the most OVERRATED emcees EVER. Seriously, stop dickriding. They aren't legends and they're not the best. Too many people have that twisted.

P.S.S Childish Gambino is the best. GOODNIGHT.

I agree with most of your post, but I feel insulted kinda

I don't listen to Modern Hip hop and dissect it.. There's no need to cause the message they send stands out, I understand that in the end of the day we should enjoy music for what it is, but why can't we send a positive message instead of using negative influences to draw in fans? But hey, like you said.. it's only for the hype and it'll eventually die down.

I'm not going to lie, there are some mainstream songs I enjoy but It's not a everyday thing or a go to song whenever I go to youtube.

Lol, my bad. I didn't mean to insult anyone. I tried to make my post a general statement. My bad if you thought certain parts were directed at you

They send out that message because it's what sells. Plain and simple. If someone put out a song about brushing your teeth at least 3 times a day, the importance of breakfast, and saying no to drugs, do you think anyone would buy it/listen? Nah, no chance. At the end of the day, music business is exactly that, business. The fans who get drawn in are the weak minded people who don't bother looking for substance in music and probably life in general, lol.

If this song comes on in the car and you have at least a decent system and you DON'T start rockin' out, there is a problem. I don't even know half the shit he's saying but who cares, it's meant to be fun.

Wow, I really feel educated now..

and I can't lie the Instrumentals is what draw me in to today's Hip hop, and the songs are catchy but I hate the lyrics with a passion though. Especially the Song Amen by Meek Millz.. The whole song is a contradiction, but the instrumentals. I can't get enough of them.
