Define - "Spam"

Playing online, I've learned that EVERYTHING is appearantly spamming. Using specials=spam. Blocking "too much"=spam. Uppercuts=spam. Same 2 or 3 combos=spam. Gimme a break, you whiny hoes...I should be able to play any way I want...screaming "SPAM" is just a way for losers to rationalize defeat. I don't even use the typical "spammy" characters, and appearantly I spam. I spam with Jax and Mileena? Really?...then defend it, you scrub...I'm not going to roll over for you so that I can "play the right way", whatever that's supposed to mean.

Combos vs. Combos is not the only way to "play the game the right way". That's beyond stupid...why even have specials in the game? By the way, I'll never call anyone a spammer...If Kabal wants to ground saw/fireblast me all day, and he's kicking my ass, why should he stop? He's not brain-dead...he's effective with the character. And if Noob's shadowing me to death, but it's not effective, then I win. Why hate on someone who's ass I'm already kicking?

Also, the whole "zoning vs. spam" argument is retarded. It's the same thing...but if someone you respect tosses fans with Kitana, then it's zoning. If some kid that you hate does it, then he's a spammer. Again, gimme a break, you whiny hoes. If the spamming is as simplistic as you all make it sound, then it should be an easy win. And if the zoning is so effective, then it's because that person is flooding you with projectiles and such. Spam, zoning, all the same, and completely fine.

I wish there was a rep system cause I would rep this post with 1000 positive reps.

EDIT: Want to know the REAL DIFFERENCE between zoning and spamming? Spamming is an excuse a crap/noob player uses when they lose. And THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE!

And THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE!

CAUSE STONE COLD...... SAID SO!!!!

Wtf is that supposed to mean? So according to the post I was responding to, 1 projectile over and over is spamming but 2 alternated over and over is zoning and that takes skill?

No, that's still spamming.

Alternating two projectiles in various rythms and patterns, THAT'S Zoning and takes skill.

Pretty much exactly what I was gonna say Demetrius.

The big difference between spamming and zoning is how you do it. The end goal is the same thing, to keep the other player away and kill them. The "how" of that is a zoner uses their brain. If they think you're going to try and jump over the next projectile they bait out that jump and throw their high projectile a little late or they use an instant-air fireball and they knock the opponent out of their jump. If they anticipate dash blocking, a zoner might throw out a low projectile (if they have it) to hit the opponent low while they feel safe in their dash blocking. They keep the opponent out by using their brain. They bait out teleports, block, punish and then keep applying projectile pressure. If the opponent does get close with a heavy rushdown character (Liu Kang or Johnny Cage for instance) then maybe they'll read the string, jump it, and start a combo of their own with a cross-up. Once that combos been played out they continue pushing the opponent right the f--k away from them. It's all about intelligence. Stagger the projectile rhythm, switch up between high, low, or instant-air (when possible), anticipate the opponent's moves and counter them. That's zoning.

Agree 100%

This is rubish.. zoning and spammign are compleatly diffrent and they are easy to tell apart.... Here is some examples from comps...

This is Zoning (posted already)

This is Spamming
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UALJWTCnW4&feature=player_embedded#t=834s

Are you telling me you can not tell the diffrence?

Repetitive use of the same moves with no though as to how they will affect the game beyond the damage they inflict and no intention of ever evolving their playstyle and becoming a better player overall.

I pick Liu Kang and Kung Lao errrr day just to fish for hate mail.
Liu: b3, 1, 2 (rinse repeat)
Lao: 2, 4, low hat (rinse repeat)
The way i see it is that it's just a quicker way of wading through all the idiots online. If you can figure out how to block a low attack, then i'll try something else.

The only different really in these two videos is the distance the characters are away from each other and that has nothing to do with the matter of zone/spamming. In both the videos there is spam and zoning. In the first video the characters are at fullscreen away from each other and in the other they are about halfscreen away. I don't see any difference other than the distance. Is it spamming just because it is Noob Saibot? Is it zoning just because it is Katana/Lao?

Are you meaning that the first video isn't spam just because there are times where they are fighting in close quarters right in each others faces? Because that is stupid. How does what happens at a later time during a match affect what terminology you would use to describe a different particular part of that match? In the first video they only spam/zone for some of the match but in the second he is spamming and zoning the whole match. Spamming/zoning only half the match is still spam just like spamming/zoning the whole match is spam.
With that said i will also say this, you can't zone without spam but you can spam without zoning so spamming and zoning aren't necessarily the same. If a Raiden keeps teleporting and supemaning that is obviously not zoning but it is definitely spam. Though both of those videos are spam and zoning lol.

My definition of "spam" is when a player continuously executes the same or handful of moves over and over without any strategy. An example of this is Noob's or Smoke's teleport or Scorpion's teleport and hell fire.

So basically after reviewing what everyone has posted, zoning is when you are throwing projectile after projectile at someone else and spamming is when someone else is throwing projectile after projectile at you.

...am I right?

Nope. spamming is just using the same move over and over again, zoning is trying to keep the opponent away from you but with zoning you are inevitably going to spam. Neither have to be necessarily be with projectiles.

sure you would

You wouldn't love getting free combos?

your damn right. Calling spamming zoning just shitty and annoying players excuse word, simply because it sounds better than spamming. Theres alot of bizarre AND pompous twazacks about when it comes to fighting games, who sit there awfully proud of there self, grinning away throwing these nonsense terms about. Its kind of like swearing when your a kid and not realising it. Alot of folk have heard it been been used by one of there peers or someone they admire so they repeat it, because they think it will make them appear cool or to be more educated than everyone else. Until you grow up a little bit and find out its quite the opposite

looks like someones a little angry...

say whatever you want, until someone lreleases a fighting game with 0 special moves and 0 ranged attacks zoning and spamming will both exist.

zoning is a mindgame in itself, trhying to condition/figure out what your opponent will do next and stop them.

spamming is d,f,3 repeatedly until they get punched in the face.

zoning's base definition is control/manipulation of space. so it isnt JUST throwing out projectiles either. its proper use of spacing at the end of combos/strings of both you AND your opponent. proper use of footsies/pokes. proper use of defensive moves like noobs upknee to stop the JiP makes the opponent afraid of jumping, therefore you are now controlling airspace ingame with the htreat of a upknee!

but you can go back to your johnny cage rushdown, remember, if they block...low hit them! woooo the trickery, the skill! and yes, that was overly sarcastic, i apologize. i dont have a problem with rushing hell i play csz for a reason, but when someone thinks all the game is is rushdown and the affiliated mechanics with it, then they are playing half a game.

It's annoying when some people try to impose their false sense of honor because somebody else is not playing the game like they want them to. At the end of the day, fighting games give you set of tools, it's up to the player to make use of it. The root of the problem is certain folks refuse to admit they have made mistakes that lead to their defeat. They place the blame on other players for using moves and tactics they don't know how to deal with instead of working on a solution to the problem.

Yeah i think that is the main problem, too many people think rushing is the only way every character should play which is silly.

well a prime example is someone throwing projectiles from across the screen at nauseum because my character cant teleport or slide. i dont know what it is about a person who takes advantage of something just because they can. what that translates into real life is that person is a brainless dick. its always the short cuts that are so appealing. what i dont get is how someone pays money to translate to the world that they are shallow and dont really care if they are liked or not. video games are the crappiest paying job for some people i swear. its all about the W and that shit called fun comes second. if second.
