What's with the Kabal love?

Kabal is not one of my favorites but I can see how people like him. Who doesn't like Darth Vader and hook blades?

After this game comes out he may end up being my favorite, I just didn't get into him in mk3. And nobody can argue that the ps2 mk games were lacking in a lot of areas so I just was confused, and thought maybe I missed something about him.

Kabal's combo in UMK3 won me a lot of money back in the day. I got no beef with him. Someone said it earlier he has an it factor. the hook swords and he was a great change up from the overly crowded amount of ninjas in UMK3. It's something you can't explain just think about the characters you like and then you can understand why people like him.

I'm not quite sure why anyone questions others on the characters they like. It's all personal preference and taste. Some people like this, others like that, some hate this, others hate that. It's just how it is, and you should be thankful for that. If everyone liked the same stuff, things would be extremely boring, predictable, and severely lacking in variety.

I mean, if someone likes a certain character, it's obvious one of these aspects about the character appeal to them:
1. Visual
-The character looks cool to them, and they dig certain things in his appearance. Could be a simple thing such as a scar, or something like a haircut, hair color, age, height, physique...traits such as those. Then you have the way they dress, the things they wear etc. If you are into ninjas, you're bound to like the way the ninjas look. If you like martial arts, you're bound to like the way Liu Kang looks. If you like cyborgs and robots etc., you'll probably like the way the cyborgs look. If you like creatures, you'll most likely be into Reptile or Baraka etc. It's whatever appeals to your interests. Most people base their initial interest in a character's looks, so this is important.

2. Personality
-The character fits to what they dig in a personality. Is the character good, neutral, or bad? Is the character a ****y douche? Is he an emotionless killer? Is he extremely loyal? Is he a mysterious enigma? Is he a muscle head? Is he serious, or is he humorous? Personality also plays a big part in who you like. It doesn't have to be a personality you necessarily care for in reality, but if it's a strong personality, you're bound to be interested in it. A dull character who lacks a real defining personality, or hasn't been fleshed out, is one who isn't as appealing as some others.

3. Gameplay
-Is the character fun to use? Do they have flashy moves that not only look awesome, but have interesting results that are fun to do? It's also a matter of what type of stuff they use. If you like moves that revolve around Fire, you'll like Liu or Scorpion. If you like moves around Ice, you'll like Sub-Zero...Electricity you'll dig Raiden. Magic and sorcery...well you get the idea. This plays a part in who someone might like. If you try out someone and their moves aren't enjoyable, you are probably not going to want to play as them, regardless of how they look. Gameplay is very important, and finding somone that appeals to you revolves around it in a lot of ways. There are some people I think look cool and that I try and play as, but their gameplay just doesn't fit my style and what I like.

4. Story
-Are you into Gods with tons of power? Are you into the fallen hero? Are you into the cold blooded killer who has no remorse? Do you like the mysterious warrior who not much is known about? Do you like the leader? Do you like the guy who is in it for the fame? How about the story of revenge? This is the last important factor in deciding who appeals to you, but it's still important. If someone lacks a story, or has a crappy flat one, then chances are you won't be attached to them. You may like to play as them for their fun moves and cool looks, but you have no real relation to them, or understanding of who they are.

Sorry for the boring response, but you proposed a question that needed some explaining. People like who they like based off these factors. So to ask "why?", well, it's obvious Kabal appeals to some people when it comes to those categories. He has a cool unique look. He has fun moves, and awesome weapons. He is also a very mysterious individual, who looks like a villain, but is actually a hero. There's appeal in that.

@ Cyborg
I would +Rep you...

But with how much rep power you have it would seem like pissing in the wind...

This pretty much answers everything, plus he wasn't the only character with the uppercut combo: Kano, Sindel and Stryker had it too.

The real question is: why all the Smoke love, for example?? Now that is a mystery: a character which looked different in every game and didn't even have his own moves deserves more attention than Kabal?

Sub-Zero's best friend, and one true ally, who lost all of his free will and is now forced to hunt him while living in the shadow of his former self...
Pretty interesting, imo

If I had titled this thread "Kabal FTW! What do you guys love about Kabal!!!" this response would not exist. I realize people have opinions. MESSAGE BOARDS EXIST TO EXPRESS OPINIONS AND PROVIDE INFORMATION. Good lord. I simply said I don't dig him, but a lot of people do, why? I didn't say christmas is a holiday based on a fictional character in a propaganda filled book used for control for centuries...lighten up people.

You're telling me to lighten up, yet you're the only one I see getting bent out of shape over this. You asked "What is the appeal of Kabal, why do people like him etc?" and I answered it. First I explained what things someone considers when liking someone, and then explained why someone would like Kabal. Pretty straight forward if you ask me.

Your response is as if I had gotten annoyed and insulted you for asking, when that's not the case. I didn't say "WTF?!!? Why do people asks such stupid ****ing questions!?!?". I merely questioned why someone would ask a question as you did. We could all ask "why do you like ____", but it's not really something that is necessary. It's all personal preference in what you like in your characters. You could have just as easily asked yourself why someone would like Kabal, and get an answer quicker and easier. It's not too hard to understand.

That's all. Nothing to fret over or feel threatened by. I'll try and throw in a few jokes and witty remarks next time if it helps.

Haha, ok..ok..listen I just don't understand why, not just you, people are asking why I asked why? It's a message board! It's conversation. That's what it's there for.

If there is a thread saying,"Who do you think the next character reveal is" nobody says, "well your asking about someone's opinion...why do that?". Do you get my point...I"m not mad, I'm perplexed.

Treadmill, I completely agree with you. I personally find Kabal to be drab/boring, and ugly. I agree about the excessive use of brown. In no way does he remind me of Darth Vader as a previous poster stated. His mask looks more like a World War II gas mask. I consider him to be one of my least favorite characters in the entire series. The only reason I tolerate him in a game is to beat him and up and perform a fatality. In general however, I have a low opinion of all the characters introduced in Mortal Kombat 3 (especially Stryker, Sheeva, and Kabal).

Kabal is cool. I mean I'm not one of those people who are all like "OH MY GOD KABAL, YESSS!"

It's cool he was the top tier player in UMK3, but I always hated the fact there is tiers in fighting games, I usually try to get pro with the underdog (Johnny Cage :P) I like the story behind him, as well as his dope moves and look. Those Hook Swords are nasty!

Run Spin move..Bladed Wheel..Run...4hit punch combo ending with uppercut..Jump kick..Face shot (air)
Do this twice with Kabal the fight was over.

I also like his looks/characteristics, Hook swords and originality.
I love Scorp and Sub but sometimes I get tired of all the different colored ninja's
His look was dark and fit right into the MK universe

Not quite sure what you want from me. I agree that the whole point of a forum is to share opinions, and I encourage that 100%. However, the way you approached it is different from the example you just gave. There's a difference between asking people's opinions for the sake of discussion, and asking why people like a character. You basically explained why you think Kabal sucks, then asked people to explain why they like him. Had you started off just asking why people like him, instead of pegging him as crap first, there WOULD be a difference.

Example 1
"I think this game is crap, I just don't see how people could like this new Mortal Kombat. It just looks dull and boring, and I don't understand the sudden excitement for the new one. What's to like about this new MK?"

Example 2
"I was wondering whatyour opinions were on Kabal. I mysef could never really get into him, but I was curious as to what others think of him, and what about him appeals to you?"

The same basic question, completely different approach in attitude. Fact is, regardless of YOUR purpose or intentions for this specific thread, there's a lot of douche bags on forums who like to stir up trouble and put down other's interests. Besides, I didn't lash out at you or freak out, I simply asked "why?". Then I proceeded to answer your question thoroughly. No big deal on my end, yet somehow you weren't satisfied with it.

Regardless, this whole thing has been beaten to death, and there's no sense in arguing over nothing. Say what you need to say, i've said all there is to say on my end.

Its funny that you guys are saying that he reminds you of darth vader because Kabals face was modeled after the tusken raiders in Star Wars.

Hahhhahahahahahahhhhaaa !

Johhny Cage ? Under dog ? Played MK1 have you ?

Listen, I get all the people being excited for the original characters being reintroduced in the new game, but since the announcement of this game there has been this huge swell of anticipation for Kabal to be introduced. Why?

I am in no way saying people shouldn't be excited for him, I just genuinely don't see his appeal. The ninjas I get, they are freakin ninjas. Liu Kang, sure. Kano, the cyborgs, Rayden, Johnny Cage...absolutely.

Kabal's palette is brown on brown with a sprinkle of brown. I'm pretty sure he's wearing dickies cargo shorts. I don't get it. I've got a theory that people are interested in him just because in UMK3 he had a combo that endend in an uppercut that you could continue the combo out of...unlike most of the uppercuts where the game kept you frozen till the opponent hits the ground.

Can someone explain to me the interest in Kabal? Is it the Mad Max thing? I just don't get it.

He's one of the 2 best fighters in UMK3. I don't give a rat's ass about his appearance, design or story. He puts shit down in UMK3, and while this isn't UMK3, he's bound to still be a badass this time around.

Remind me to rep you when I can because you're the first guy who mentioned that in this thread.

Not only here to give respect to Taj, but also my opinion:

Kabal is much like Smoke in my opinion, a tortured soul. He was mangled and beaten to the brink of death by the extermination squad, only kept alive by an unknown force. The unknown force began his enigmatic character. As the MK3 continued, it seemed as though he might have been a villain. His continued grwoth as a character came with MKD in which he was developed as Kano's replacement and brought him to the forefront as a major player. Then finally in MKA he came back with a guttural/mechanical voice which was simply awesome with a quote that I remember to this day:
"I don't know who you are, but you'd make a fine addition to the Black Dragon clan."
A lot of MK quotes are iconic but I remember this Armageddon quote the most.
When the leak (thanks to Shawn here) appeared and we heard Kabal's,
"Let's see what you're made of." In the same voice as MKA, just more technified the fanboy in me squealed like a fangirl. As weird as it may seem, it is the most apt analogy I could make as voice acting I believe is some of the most pivotal parts of a fighting game which makes it so enjoyable.

Sorry for the digression but that is why I like Kabal.

Whats not to like about Gas Masks and (From what I've heard, what his initial design was) Trench Coats?

That's like throwing Darth Vader and Dante into a blender and pushing: AWESOME!

I think he is a cool guy, but I could care less about him honestly, He kind of seems like a spam character with that run move, kind of like how the flash was :(

I really loved Kabal's run move where the other character would be left spinning and open for a combo and at the time his fatalities where awesome. I would really like him to have new fatalities though.
