What's with the Kabal love?

Here's why I love Kabal so much.

When I first got my hands on the MK3 arcade sticks, he was the first character I chose. I was so stoked to play the new MK and I wanted to try someone new and fresh. I loved his look. The mask gave him the same typical mystery of all the other masked characters without being a pallet swap. His weapons were a huge appeal as well. The hook swords completed his design IMO. The ground saw, before it was nerfed in UMK3, was such a badass move with unique timing and an awesome effect. It reminded me of Baraka's blade fury, but was combo-able. The run dash solidified him as my favorite. This move was as useful to use as Sub-Zero's freeze and Scorpion's spear. It also carried with it the same danger, because if it is blocked you are left wide open. So it took skill to use and timing to use. On top of it all, he was a hero character. Basically I just love Kabal because he is still one of, if not THE most, original and likable characters that has been introduced into the MK series period.

Fair enough...haha. That's kind of what I'm looking for.

I have played it. In fact I've played the first 3 games an embarrassing amount of time. I'm not saying it is wrong for someone to like him, I just couldn't ever get into him.

Like I said, boring visually. I think that is a huge part of it. Lots of heavy colors, black and browns etc. I also felt the uppercut thing was cheap. He's not the only character I dislike, it just seems he has the most love of any of the mk3 characters.

I play MK because the characters are (for the most part) all interesting. If I wanted to get "tech" and "tournament" I'd play something else. It's all about the design of the characters for me, and Kabal was the least interesting of the first 3 games.

i hear you. and i am pretty sure that kabal thing was fixed in UMK and thats the only one ive really played, not the original.with that being said umk players dig kabal because he can really do damage in that game. I think we all just want to see that blazing, in your face gameplay that kabal brought into that game.

I understand that, and maybe that is part of what I hate. He seems to have a competitive advantage. If I play UMK3 online 9/10 people use kabal. Boring. That's why MKII is my favorite because all the characters are really balanced, save for Mileena.

Ahh, then the truth comes out.
Alot of people feel a certain dislike for the "top tier" characters in fighting games. Like Steve in Tekken6, Fox in SSBM, Sentinel in MvC3, Sagat in SF4. It's a necessary evil good fighting games have to have. People like categorizing how good characters are compared to other characters.
TOP Tier though, is not GOD tier. GOD tier is when someone is unfairly better than most of the cast. UMK3 is a really balanced game. Kabal is very very beatable by every mid/high tier character.

Yeah you pegged me..I do want balance in a fighting game.

Why pick any other character if one character has an advantage, all the time, no matter how big or small?

Easy answer. Different play styles throw people off. Can't tell you how many times pro UMK3 players use someone like Sonya(ranged sweep and poke master) in a money match or tournament to throw their oppenent off what they're use to.

Also. Even though top tier characters are on top, doesn't mean they don't have bad match ups vs specific characters. In the end though it all comes down to how good the player is. Character doesn't make too big of a difference even if you have a 4-6 disadvantage in a matchup. There is no such thing as a perfectly balanced fighting game. People will always make tier lists and put one character with the honor of being on top.

The truth is you can't say " I use kabal because he's better" then say, "well he's not THAT much better, so...it's ok"

KABAL WINS
ORIGINALITY!

Aside from the energy ball his moves are some of the more original. He introducted the hook swords and had a scare you to death fatality. He added something different.

I completely disagree with that buddy <_< lol
And for the record I use Kano in UMK3. Don't really use the top tier in any fighting game I play now that I think about it.And I play all of them competitively either offline or online . And its not because I don't want to choose my best chance at winning, it's that I honestly believe my best chance of winning is with those characters I choose instead. It's not like all characters have the same tools but the top tier characters have the same tools but better. Other characters have DIFFERENT tools; tools that might be better suited for your playstyle.

It's like in COD:Black Ops. The AK74u has been called the overall best gun in the game, yet only about 30% of people who play the game for money use it. It's because they feel like they have a better chance at winning using their playstyle with a different gun that suits them better.
I think that's a pretty good example.

Yeah, I get your point. But this thread wasn't created to determine who you do and do not use...lol. The fact is that a lot of people use him. A lot of people really want him in this new game. I was curious why, because I found him less than interesting, and the response I got was,"well his combos are good" or "he really plays faster"or "his uppercut gives you an advantage." I find that to be an issue. That is the reason why most people stated, so yes It is a competitive advantage. If you don't use it as such, great.

All I know is that people are saying they really liked him because he played different. "different' isn't fair.

I dig him 'cause he's got a post-apocalyptic vibe, coupled with the super-speed and the hook swords, it's just generally a genre-tastic MK character.

I honestly don't understand all these why or why-not threads for different characters. If they were in MK1-3, that's reason enough to put 'em in. In my opinion, they're all pretty great! But yeah, Kabal's a personal fave.

The why or why not threads exist because this is a message board to discuss exactly these types of things. We don't come to this web site to say "hey bro, I love Mortal Kombat too!" *high five* "Good thing we all have the exact same opinion!"

Message boards are for debate, or exchanging information. I just wondered why he was one of the most beloved characters. Simple as that. If you want to just agree with everybody, then these message boards will be literally non existent.

I do agree that being in 1-3 is reason enough though. I want him in also, just because I think it should contain all the trilogy characters. I just don't really like his design.

I really liked Kabal's playstyle in UMK3, and his story, appearance, and weapons of choice are very recognisable.
His combos are fairly complex, and fun to watch too...

That's ok. And I'm not trying to sway your opinion or anything. I'm just trying to give you incite on tourny player's opinion. Nothing is unfair or cheap in UMK3 and its what makes it such a tourny playable game still today.
My whole tier discussion started from comments like this:

Sorry if I got off topic ._.
Overall I and a couple other people have a certain level of love for Kabal because of his playstyle and special moves in UMK3. He was a bait and punish character. He tries to stay on you until you make a mistake, and in the right hands that could be pretty deadly. As a person who likes playing defensive/anti-air/grappler based characters in 2d fighters, it was really really fun playing against him. I hope they keep his same style in MK9

I gotch'ya...(which is ironically one of my favorite moves)

LOL, I cannot believe theres a thread made to basically question people's opinions. What youre asking can be asked about every other character, its personal preference.

Kabal is defiantly my favortie character in the series. Probably my favorite video game character along with Solid Snake, and Kratos. Yep Kratos. His moves are fast and effective, he has the look of a Tusken Raider, his story could probably evolve better then most in mk9.

I like Kabal because besides his awesome moveset, he's such a mysterious character. When I play as him I always wonder about "the man behind the mask." He's the kind of guy you want to know more about.

He was one of the very few new MK3 characters who resonated with me, personally. Nightwolf? No, too heavy. Sindel? Bad special moves, imo. Sheeva and Stryker? Tee hee. Unlike the cyborgs, he was completely original in design and he had a cool back story; to me, that justifies his undying love around here. And I loved his combos, beyond the cheap uppercut deal.

Here's why I love Kabal so much.

This pretty much answers everything, plus he wasn't the only character with the uppercut combo: Kano, Sindel and Stryker had it too.

The real question is: why all the Smoke love, for example?? Now that is a mystery: a character which looked different in every game and didn't even have his own moves deserves more attention than Kabal?

I totally agree, why do people like things that I don't?

I never got into Kabal, or a few other characters, but I can understand why some people would like the non-ninjas.
