Midway has announced four new characters added to the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe roster at the Games Convention 08 in Leipzig, Germany. From the Mortal Kombat side of things, the trend of adding classic Mortal Kombat characters continues with Raiden and Kano joining the fight. On the DC Universe side, DC Comics "supervillain" Deathstroke, a mercenary and assassin who carries a blade, and the ever classic Wonder Woman.

Expect a gameplay announcement from Games Convention later in the day.

GameSpot is over in Leipzig, Germany for Games Convention 08 and shot this video camera footage of the four new characters announcement of Wonder Woman, Deathstroke, Raiden and Kano in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. When each character was announced, their render was flashed on the screen, showing a glimpse of the art direction for each character.

This video would be completely unnecessary if Midway would have just released all of the renders at once, but alas, we are only treated with the one render of Wonder Woman.

GameSpot and Kotaku both have reports on Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe from the floor of Games Convention 08 in Leipzig, Germany that details The Joker's unique fighting strengths and weaknesses, along with the new gameplay mechanic unveiled at GC 08, the Rage meter. First off, The Joker has many comical weapons and attacks, including exploding playing cards, short-fuse bombs that can be thrown short or long that send your opponent flying towards or away respectively, a joy buzzer that electrocutes your opponent upon contact with your hand, a spring-loaded boxing glove that wallops the opponent, a taunt move that has The Joker prancing around in glee that build up the Rage Meter and a bright green camouflaging smoke that allows you to perform a random attack out of the cloud, including a pistol whip. GameSpot also had the opportunity to witness The Joker's fatality.
And though we haven't seen the full roster yet, we're willing to bet that the Joker's fatality is the best in the bunch. After pulling a pistol on his dazed opponent, he pulls the trigger and a flag with the word "BANG" appears out of the barrel. Just when you think that's it, the Joker pulls out a real pistol and splits his opponents' wig. It's shocking and funny the first time you see it...just what you want from an MK fatality.

Also in the build at Games Convention 08 was the debut of the all-new gameplay mechanic, the Rage Meter. It seems to harken back to the days of the Aggressor meter in Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
Each character will have a rage meter, just underneath his or her health meter. You build your rage meter by taking and dealing damage or by blocking an opponent's strikes. As the meter fills up, you can use breaks to block an opponent's strikes. If you let the rage meter build up completely, however, you can enter rage mode (by pressing the shoulder buttons). Here, you'll have roughly six seconds to kick as much butt as you possibly can. Your attacks will be more powerful and, more importantly, unblockable. So, as long as you can make contact, you'll be pounding your foe into dust. Just watch out because his or her rage meter will be similarly building. As a result, you'll have to use your rage meter at the right moment (preferably to finish off your opponent). If you fail to do so, you might find yourself on the receiving end of a rage flurry.

UPDATE: Here is a video of Creative Director Ed Boon describing Rage Mode and it's two part usage of being a combo "Breaker" and an "Aggressor Mode".

Definitely some interesting stuff coming out of Games Convention 08. Sounds like The Joker might be quite the pain to play against online with people who can master his attacks. The Rage Meter also brings another element of strategy to the table that may reward defensive tactics more than those who are constantly on the offensive. The Rage Meter was the last of the major announcements planned for Games Convention 08. The next opportunity for any major reveals is at the Moscow Games event in the next few days.

GameTrailers has a special sneak peek of the special moves and fighting mechanics of The Joker, originally shot for the GameTrailers TV show on SpikeTV. In addition, we are given a glimpse of the Rage Meter in action. Finally at the end, we are given the first look of The Joker tricked out Fatality. The video speaks for itself. Check it out.

We can see that the green cloud move is a guessing game move that allows the player to perform different attacks out of the cloud. Definitely an unorthodox character for a Mortal Kombat game; however, it appears that this added element of variety falls right within Mortal Kombat's history of humor and violence. The biggest shocking moment is the gruesomeness of the gun shot to the head in The Joker's fatality, given the game's targeted T for Teen rating.

Thanks DeathcoreRyknow!

MK Universe, a Mortal Kombat fan-site based out of Luxembourg, has posted a video interview (wmv, 55.1MB | YouTube Part I, YouTube Part II) with Creative Director, Ed Boon. In this english-language interview, quite a few interesting and unknown details about Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe are revealed.

First off, MK vs DC Universe will be region-free, meaning the game disc from each part of the world will work worldwide. The European PAL versions of the game will be released at the same time as their North American NTSC counterparts. In addition, some bad news for PAL regions as the Limited Edition version of the game will not be released in PAL territories, but that has been the case for the last few releases.

The development team is shooting for two fatalities per character. Boon also explains that the yellow eyes that each character has when performing a fatality is a product of the "Rage" angle the storyline features. The color is significant as that is the same color the glowing aura that envelops your character when you enable "Rage Mode".

In other storyline details, the collision of the two worlds is started by Superman and Raiden. The basic idea is that there are two events that happen at the same time and at the same place in the two dimensions. That starts the two universes overlapping and characters from one universe being transported to the other. The whole story deals with the characters invading each others' universe and why. Also, the end boss is a character that MK Fans will not be familiar with and Shang Tsung cannot morph in the game due to technical reasons.

The training mode will be more elaborate than those featured in the last two games. Also, there will not be any death traps in the arenas. Character endings will not be in-game cinematics, but will be artwork graphics with a narrated storyline and text.

Finally, in an attempt to get at the names of hidden characters, Boon states that Reptile is not in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Overall a pretty interesting interview that reveals a lot of details that aren't available yet, including some details on the script of a possible new Mortal Kombat Movie. Check it out! Thanks LeoTMNT.
