Your vocation in life

I know this can be seen as quite a personal question and many may not like to say what they do, but im curious as to what people do.

I'll go first. I graduated from university this year after 4 years in education with Secondary Honours in Environmental Science. Because the subject is very broad, it's divided into 4 paths. I originally started on Sustainability, then I switched to Animal Behaviour, Biodiversity and Conservation as I find wildlife an incredible subject of interest.

At my age, studying to be something like a Veternarian has probably passed me by, as I don't intend to spend yet another 7-10 years at school to be qualified as a Vet (yes really).

The appeal of being a Consultant doesnt interest me anymore and what I want to do is break into Environmental Health, specifically as a Animal Welfare and Health Officer, which would mostly entail inspecting farms, zoo's, pet shops, that kind of thing to make sure none of the animals are being treated bad and that there is no risk to public health.

Finding work is hard, especially in this climate. I've literally just been on the phone to a County Council and unsurprisingly, all their positions are frozen and they told me they may have to lay people off. However they could offer me work experience and to forward my CV onto them. I do work now, as a delivery driver, and while it's not what I had in mind, it is a job, and im thankful for having one, especially as the Economies of the Western world are all but on their knees right now.

So..what do the rest of you do.

It's two early for me to say anything other than what I want to do, which is get a degree in aeronautical engineering or literary arts and become an officer in the RCAF, where I will learn to fly fighter jets.

I graduated high school and after a year, signed up for the US Navy.
Just waiting to get shipped for bootcamp, which will be January 19th.
Until then, working at a Sonic Drive-In that I skateboard to everyday.

I've been at university for 3 semesters now, studying computer science. I also do a graphic design course, and we're now studying Flash for games, and I've been thinking about going for the videogame area.

I have no vocation whatsoever. There's just too much stuff I like doing, but none of them I like much more than the others, so I could be doing a lot of courses. For example, if I hadn't gone for computer science, I think I'd do chemistry, or maybe mechatronics, or even something about graphical design, more towards Photoshop, Illustrator and stuff (but I don't think there's a course specifically for that at my university). I've actually considered changing course, but I think I'll stay at computer science anyway.

I went to school and I have General Education under my belt in college.

I'm also a certified Fire fighter and EMT.

So you might ask why am I filling up Pepsi Vending machines when I have those degrees/certifications under my belt?

The general education was just for me to grow my mind/intellect in a general broad sense.

I really like helping people so I thought fire fighter was the best thing for me. But they get paid next to shit. A burger King supervisor makes more money than fire fighters. And we're more capable of being sued/lawsuit. We also have to live with guilt when we can't save someone. Handle distressed family members who scream at you calling you a bastard and blaming you for not saving them when the fire is so fully involved it'd be suicide to go in and save them. But we understand they are just thinking about their loved ones being lost so we take anger when we can't save, then we feel guilty.

Not to mention it's life threatening job when a call happens.

Anyways when I got a offer to work as a Vendor, and I saw the pay raise. I dropped firefighting and went for Pepsi.

I learned EMT for fire fighting. I could also use it to be an ambulance driver. But that's all behind me now. I make more money as a vendor and in this day in age with the economy going in the direction it is... money is more important than my little self satisfying job.

I still volunteer occasionally for free on the weekends.

I could tell you about my fire fighting training and how quick you will learn if you are afraid of heights or are claustrophobic. I've seen many guys who spent 2k on this class.... QUIT right at the ladder(heights) portion, The search and rescue (Claustrophobic), and the final LIVE burn excersize.

I went to college for Animal Care. absolutely love animals <3 Sadly, I love them too much to be able to handle being around dying animals. I could not lie with myself if I had to even fill the needle that puts that animal to sleep....I cry when they show those SPCA commercials....yeah...so that was that, though I would still <3 to be a vet but, oh well, being depressed every single day of my life having to be around sick and dying animals is not what I want to do.

I now work for Land Rover. Here is the Evoque. A shitload of people ordered it back when it didn't even have a price yet.

I'm an audio engineer by day and ninja by night.

On a serious note though, I work at the University Of Miami, in the School Of Law audio visual department.
I just opened up my OWN recording studio (3 weeks ago), and as soon as I get enough business circulating, I'm getting out of UM and being my own boss. I LOVE audio. Whether it's recording, mixing or editing, I LOVE it. I have done a few short films for some friends in college, as far as Voice-Overs and SoundFX go.
I'm currently working on 2 projects in the new studio (1 is a band, the other is a rap duo).
My ultimate dream is to be able to do what I love for a living, while working my own hours. ;-)
