WiiU: What'd You Think?

Man, I hate you guys right now.

I wish I had my Gamecube again. I want to play some Smash Bro Melee. I love that game. It got me and my other older brother kloser to each other. He would pick Captain Falcon and I would choose Star Fox.

I'm gonna look for a Gamecube and Melee so I kan play again.

One of the only few games I play that doesn't have story

Pretty cool new system but, I'm not interest buying it right now. I will problably wait til more things are revealed

They caught my attention. And the WiiU has some serious potential. The fact that there is an HD Zelda and and HD Super Mario, just makes me want it now. I just hope it doesn't have the fate fate as the Wii's launch....Minigames now....Good games later....let's just hope that doesn't happen.
The technology is extremely impressive. The fact that I can take my game upstairs and play it on the controller's screen is amazing, and a new Super Smash Bros? Sign me up! As long as the online is good, Nintendo may have a winner on their hands.

However, the Wii has went down in infamy as it is not only the easiest to hack, but you can do a s**t ton of stuff when you do. I'm not saying I want the same amount of hacks to come to the WiiU, but I doubt hackers who want to do good will find it fun. Is that a good thing or a bad thing.

In short, the WiiU looks kool....with a k.

Do people realize that Melee was NOT intended to be a competitive game? The fans created this whole metagame regarding L-cancelling, wavedashing, etc., not HAL Laboratory. That's like getting mad at NRS for not putting Hydro in MK9. They didn't decide to bring it back, because they didn't intentionally create it in the first place, The SSB series has always been a casual series, and always will be.

Brawl is about equal to Melee to me in terms of my love for it. It brought a lot of new things to the table, like final smashes, an online mode (which IMO was really only hindered by Nintendo's crappy online services, the modes themselves are actually pretty fun). Really cannot wait for Super Smash Bros. 4, I'd buy the Wii U, which I was certainly already planning to buy, just for the game.

It looks like the Wii U will have considerably better online services this time around (no friend codes and the online capabilities of the controller for example), so I'm really excited for that. I doubt it will sell as well as the original Wii, but it is not a gimmick like that console was. It actually reminds me of the N64/GCN days when Sony was dominating and Nintendo was struggling and overall I felt the Gamecube and 64 were better than the PS1 and PS2.

any game can be made to be competitive. Rock paper scissors can be competitive. But Sakurai did have half of the things I listed "INTENTIONALLY added in"

Someone made a thread when they hacked the game apparently they know about wave dashing. but left it in the game and even tag labled it in code with some weird name label for it. THAT was an accident.

but lightshield, reflect projectile, L-cancelling, Dash dancing, Edguarding, DI, SMASHDI, ASDI(mostly used for crouch cancelling) WERE ALL INTENTIONAL. So please know what you're talking about before posting the fans made it deep. It already had half of those as deep elements.

Some more example of accidents though were shield dropping, and platform cancelling(Exploits.) but he knows about this stuff. that's the whole reason he changed his whole MOMENTUM of Brawl because of the direction Wii was going with "lets cater to casuals"

SSB64 had Z-cancelling and it was mentioned in the manual to take lag of your aerials. SSB64(Broken ass Offense, only defense you had was spacing), SSBM perfect balance of offense and defense mechanics, SSBB Slowed down intentionally to close the gap between top pros and newbs. which in turn made this game Defense favored.

did you even read the link i provided? Sakurai knows about the complexity of Melee.

I'm not admitting some of the advance techniques are "Exploits" but ALOT of it ISN'T

you can't "Accidently" put in aiming shields/ shield pokes/ Light shield/ how far you slide when you light shield. Or the fact that you can move closer during shield lag by DI'ing toward your opponent.

Here's what REALLY excites about the Wii U other than just the controller and the games: NO friend codes whatsoever. Ubisoft confirmed it would use a system similar to Xbox gamertags! The online features looks like they'll really be beefed up for the Wii U. You can use the controller to browse the Web, share videos, and make video calls, too!

I still don't think this will close to the original Wii: apparently a lot of people don't like the controller. I do agree that the controller could be too complex for casual players with all the buttons and whatnot. It probably will have a lower-than-expected first month in terms of sales, and then steadily gain traction with word-of-mouth. Maybe 50-60M in sales. Not sure what the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 will be like, but I have a bad feeling that the Wii U will have to settle for 2nd or even last place in this 8th generation of consoles. Doesn't matter, though, because I will still love my Wii U! It's great to be a Nintendo fan again!

For starters, I know that Sakurai knows about the complexity of Melee. I'm not a fool in thinking all of that stuff was an "accident". I read the article before you did, FYI, so I know what the hell I'm talking about.

Second, when I said it wasn't intentional, I meant that the SSB series was always meant to be a party series, not a very competitive one. That's why they made Brawl a lot more like the original SSB and not like Melee. The fans turned it into a game it wasn't really meant to be. Sakurai will probably listen to the fans regarding the complexity and tailor the game to match. But it still doesn't change the fact that the games are first and foremost CASUAL games, and that's not something you can argue.

I know about all of this stuff, I even did some of it myself in the decade that I've been playing Melee. And I will tell you this: I didn't like how a lot of stuff that they put in the game like L-cancelling was taken out for Brawl, either. But am I going to whine about it? How about a solid "NO"? So next time if you want to argue something, don't come off so condescending when I wasn't even referring solely to you in the first place.

um... how do you know you read it before me...? Just because i posted it now doesn't mean i just recently read it. Do you stalk me or something?

Alright, I see what you mean now. the developers didn't mean for it to be competed for money. But... You still said ignorant things like "L-cancelling was fan made"

He purposely put in DEEP elements. For the FUN FACTOR. if that isn't "sorta intentionally trying to make a deep sorta competitive game" why else would you do that? IF you care about depth... then your automatically gearing it toward hardcore competitive players. people who are "competitive" like more options... which sakurai intentionally did in SSBM.

SSB64 is closer to Melee than Brawl is.

and i disagree they made brawl more GEARED toward casuals ONLY because of Nintendo's direction at pleasing beginner/extremely casual players.

which in turn is stupid because you can play Melee at ANY level you want. Casual, or Pro. Brawl doesn't have that. It only has casual. So.. fail on their part.

I'm not arguing that all that stuff was fan-made. I know that stuff was intentionally put into the game to make it deeper. I'm just saying that the series isn't solely a competitive one. That's why I said "fan-made"; not because the fans actually made it, but because they turned it into this competitive game, Sakurai and company only gave us the tools to doing so. Can we agree on that?

Anything you play to win is competitive. I think you mean it wasn't ment to used for money competitions/ E-sports. Which i agree, but it WAS made to be somewhat competitive.

1.
of, pertaining to, involving, or decided by competition: competitive sports; a competitive examination.
2.
well suited for competition; having a feature that makes for successful competition: a competitive price.
3.
having a strong desire to compete or to succeed.

dictionairy definition.
You don't have a strong desire to compete or succeed when you play smash? why else would you try to knock off you opponents with moves?

so lets agree it was not ment for E-sports/Played for Money. Because I completely agree with that.

I don't agree with saying it wasn't made to be somewhat very competitive.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant; playing to win money at tournaments. I understand what you mean; all games have a competitive element to them, I consider even CoD to be competitve. I was merely saying that it wasn't created to be played to win money at tournaments.

Kiss and make up?

When people talk about "competitive fighting games", they're talking about how technical it is. Over all, the Smash Bros. series isn't well suited for high-level, really technical competition. I don't know enough about the individual games to say none of them are technical, but the simple fact that they have random drops means that the winner isn't determined on game knowledge and technical skill, which removes a lot of its competitiveness from the very start.

Knowledge and technical skill, which removes a lot of its competitiveness from the very start.

The random factors are removed from tournament play such as items, no FFA, and banned stages. Only random factors left in the game are luigis random power shot and game and watches hammer but they are extremely low tier that it's never been a metagame problem.

Melee is very technical brawl is not, ssb64 is somewhat pretty technical as well. I even dare say depending in the character ssbm is much harder to master than street fighter or blazblue. However Starcraft and guilty gear has everyones number on technical skill.

Question!!, when you played the game originally, did you know all the slang, because as i'm looking these words up that you listed, i've always used the techniques, but without consciously using them because i didn't realized that it was an entire mechanic to the gameplay

I'm hoping the new Paper Mario is for the WiiU.

Even though the 3ds is powerful, it seems like such a waste for this game not to be pushed to its full potential.
