Thoughts On Story Mode?? (SPOILER ALERTS)

I'm a very casual fan of comics in general and after the incredible reboot of MK, I had high hopes for Injustice. Comparing story mode content between the games is like comparing Hunger Games and Star Trek. Sure, they are in the same "fantasy" vein, but the target audiences are different.

Story Mode for Injustice pretty much was on par with what I expected. MK9 was based on an alternate timeline/universe, so I wasn't too shocked that theme made it in here. Although Wonder Woman's soapbox speech was a little much. I get it, but I found myself thinking, "Ok, let's move on now..."

Green Arrow stole the show. His literal "oh shit" moments were simply perfect.

I do think the rendering and texture choices in some scenes were a bit low quality and sloppy. I expected a more clear, realistic look. At times it looked "blocky" (not literally, but I can't describe it in words).

Overall I enjoyed the story mode, but I think it could have been longer by a smidge if not only to give other characters more face time or at least an explanation (Catwoman, Shazam, Ares, Killer Frost) instead of just "appearing" for the sake of appearing.

I know it's only skeptical, but it would've been sweet in during most of Aquaman's chapter that when he was speaking to the Atlantean archivist, they could've spoken in their native tongue. Guess the Young Justice series has gotten to me, especially how Aquaman, Kaldur'ahm, and Lagoon Boy were speaking in Atlantean very well.

Edit: Found the video for one clip of Young Justice. And I didn't know until now that the language for the Atlanteans were actually Ancient Greek. Check it out:

Although it's only a speculation of if it's either made-up or an actual language that ceased to exist before the century was even born.

Yeah, I was actually expecting them to speak in a different language when I got to his chapter

I really enjoyed the story mode even though it was kind of short and another alternate reality story it was still kinda shocking. For example when to was known that Damian killed Dick. I was like ohhhhhhhhh shit that's not dick as nightwing!!!!! My favorite scene however was when Aquaman was whooping serious ass : D.

Aquaman's fight scenes were fun to watch haven't seen Aquaman act tough, though story mode's pretty cool some of the characters should've gotten more screen time Catwoman, Killer Frost, etc.

Thought the story was great but WAYYYYY too short

Anyways did anyone notice good Superman killing innocent people towards the end? Black Adam tossing cars at Superman and you have to blow them up... DAMNIT THERE ARE INNOCENT PEOPLE IN THOSE CARS HES THROWING!

lol

I think NRS just overlooked the idea of people being in those cars. and thought the only way to refresh them was to have them drive by.

people in general also would've stopped driving toward that alley if they saw people getting picked up and thrown by black adam. those people must've been REALLY late to get somewhere.

I was fine with alternate universe scenario, but I didn't really want them to mix the 2.

They sort of led us on to believe that this was 1 world with the trailers. and some of the images they showed us.

Then RIGHT at the smack beginning they reveal that it's in "another universe somewhere" and show you 2 different ones.

Not gonna lie, it kind of killed it for me.

I wasn't hoping for a "evil" superman. I wanted a different "thinking" superman.

this is what I was hoping for.

A few gruesome deaths/plot twists. Which I did get with finding out their Ollie died, Damian killed Dick, Shazam being killed by Superman. I'm pretty sure Shazam looks up to superman so it made it worse.

But I wanted it stuck in 1 universe, and I didn't want superman to be PURE evil. I was hoping he believed he needed fear to get people who would use violence to stop it. But he still truly wanted to protect people.

Like I think a final fight would've been much more dramatic when you are two good guys, believing your doing the right thing and you BOTH want to protect people. But you disagree with the other's methods despite you use to having good history together.

It's like having to battle your best friend with lives on the line. Because you believe eachother is wrong.

Dunno, If I had this script there'd be a hell of a lot more feeling in the story.

I didn't like the whole "brainwash" people to get them to work for superman. I much rather liked people supporting superman because their friend just lost their wife/town/friends. And you notice that there have been no more deaths since ceasefire. And you start to trust superman, and want to back him up.

That way the heroes are more torn up when they have to battle on seperate sides. or when they must use villains to solve their differences. And always having to worry about someone stabbing you in the back because of a personal vendetta, that was only temporarily put aside because both agree that a one world government under 1 rule is a bad idea.

I knew I wasn't the only one who wasn't into the two universes lol. I spoiled it for my friends about it. They were confused. Still good story though

I mean don't get me wrong, I'd probably watch this story in a movie form or read it in a comic and think it was worth it. I think it's worth it in the game.

But I put my expectations too high, and constantly think what could've been, instead of what I got.

Overall, I felt that it had potential, but I had a few key problems with it:

1. Regime Superman's portrayal. If he had shown more of his vulnerable side or if we got to see him 5 years prior to the story after he killed that timeline's Joker, I would have been able to feel for his character more. Unfortunately though, I found his transformation into this totalitarian-esque dictator bent on preserving world peace to be a little too over-the-top for me to buy, and the scene where he kills Shazaam killed any chance of me liking his character.

The idea of Superman's fall from grace is an interesting one, but here it was poorly executed. Instead of feeling like a hero twisted and torn by the losses he suffered, he really just felt like a stock villain, with Superman's name attached. You could have put any other hero in his place and the result would be the same; nothing about Superman being the villain felt like Superman was the villain, just insert former hero here.

2. The third act/resolution of the story. I was really invested into the story up until then. I really wasn't a fan of some of the events in particular that took place then such as Flash's defection and main timeline Wonder Woman taking over alternate timeline's Wonder Women's army, and when main timeline Superman was brought in defeat Regime Superman, that pretty much ruined the build up of everything for me. I really didn't like the ending at all, made the whole story feel like a waste of time for me.

It kind of makes me wish that the whole dual timeline aspect wasn't apart of the story, and that NRS only featured one universe. In a sense, I felt like the alternate timeline was just a way they could keep Joker in the story yet still kill him at the same time (maybe not specifically, but they could have had that in mind when writing the story).

3. The story was not only too short, but too straightforward. I feel like it was a bad move revolving the story around just taking down Regime Superman; NRS could have focused a lot more on the One Earth government, its effect on the citizens, and the heroes' perception of the new world and new Superman, and they could have also given characters like Bane, Shazaam and Black Adam larger roles so that they wouldn't feel like filler characters.

All that said, everything before the third act was actually really good, Aquaman and Lex Luthor in particular stole the show for me. The voice acting was great and I liked some of the more lighthearted moments between the characters. I also really liked the cinematic feel and tone of the cutscenes even if visually, they could have been a bit better, and the cutscene fights were surprisingly not bad.

Overall, the story, while passable, played it too safe and I hate to say it, just wasn't very satisfying in the end. The story isn't amazing or particularly good, but it is worthwhile. If I had to rate it right now based on my current feelings (which, keep in mind, can change over time), I'd give it a 6.5/10.
