SPOILER ALERT:Mortal Kombat X DIGITAL COMIC DISCUSSION

Yup, there are indeed inconsistencies. You just have to take it for what it is though. Shawn Kittelsen has some creative freedom when it comes to the comics and it won't always be consistent with what we have seen in the games.

Hello there. I just registered and have an issue I want to discuss with all of you:

In chapter 6 of the comic, Kotal Kahn states that he has battled Mileena for over a decade but the problem is that in MKX there is a flashback that shows you how Kotal Kahn betrayed her and became emperor of Outworld. This flashback is stated to happen 5 years before the events of the game....

So how can you explained this mayor inconsistency?

Tarkatan Trash

How can the game be right if Kotal Kahn and Mileena's disagreement is about the Netherrealm War threatening to spill over into Outworld, and the Netherrealm War ended many years ago with Sonya defeating Quan Chi?

The game's story is at odds with itself. The comic provides a clear retcon/fix/whatever you want to call it.

Because the game is the source material, not the komic.

Because that being 5 years ago was a mistake. The dialogue about the Netherrealm War still going on makes it clear that whole scene was supposed to be 20 years prior, which the comic creative team had also been told was the case.

I guess being a mere mistake made by the game is the best way to explain it haha.

But what about Kotal Kahn's color in that scene?

There's also Cassie and Jacqui's interaction with Erron Black. They talk like they never seen each other. Cassie also talks like she has never been in Outworld. =/

All of his people usually wear blue paint is the best explanation. Really, it was just a result of NRS probably not showing Kotal's alt to the comic team.

Erron's interaction with Cassie and Jacqui leaves it vague enough that they could easily know each other, there's really nothing in that scene saying that they don't; Erron didn't want to know who they were, but what they were doing in Outworld. I don't know how to explain the Cassie thing except that she remembered the purple skies more than the blue ones, but it is still really minor. The games have had bigger ones, like the Kotal flashback mistakenly being 5 years ago rather than 20.

Spoilers for Chapter 17:

Spoiler:
As the Shokan and Oni assault on Z'Unkahrah begins, Sonya desperately tries to get in contact with Johnny and then finds herself face-to-face with an Oni Warlord. She begins blasting the heck out of it, but despite hurting it, it continues on and slices one of the other SF members in half. Meanwhile, Kotal watches the carnage from his palace, regretting how he did not kill Goro and contemplating the dagger that gives him his blood magik powers. It is also shown during this scene that Gorbak is on the battlefield, leading his troops.

Elsewhere in the city, Johnny is relieved to find one of his teammates, Pierce, but that relief turns to anger when he finds Pierce has been ripped in half. As he tries to get in contact with Sonya, Johnny then finds himself discovered by a party of Shokan led by Gorbak! Back at Kotal's palace, D'Vorah and Ferra/Torr return, only to find Kotal missing and his blood magik dagger still there. As the three wonder where their emperor went off to, Sonya is continuing her fight with the Oni Warlord. The red-haired SF member, Shaun, arrives on the scene and tries opening fire on the Oni to give Sonya some cover, but is immediately and brutally sliced right down the middle. Sonya continues blasting the Oni, eventually bringing it down at long last.

Kotal Kahn, who has just finished killing his own Oni opponent, comes across Sonya. Sonya expresses shock at how all of her SF team, including (she thinks) Johnny have died, but Kotal promises they will rescue her daughter and get revenge. Just then, Johnny runs onto the scene... with a whole mob of Shokan chasing him!

I guess we can assume Mileena doesn't like Kotal Kahn to wear blue paint in her palace. lol

What other big inconsistencies does the game have?

In the game, Raiden knows right away that Shinnok's amulet can't be destroyed. In the comic, the Elder Gods have to explain this to him.

Kenshi/Takeda's ladder endings have Daegon personally killing Suchin, in the comic it's just a bunch of random Red Dragon goons. But ladder endings are assumed non-canon until stated otherwise so this isn't a big deal at all.

Erron Black's intro dialogue vs. lots of characters paints him as an honorless gun-for-hire, contradicting the loyalty he shows to Kotal Kahn in the comic. Kano vs Erron has Kano saying Erron would make a good Black Dragon, in the comic he states the exact opposite.

Fujin shouldn't be wearing his MK:A costume in the comic, obviously.

Goro's dialogue vs Kotal doesn't acknowledge their relationship from the comic at all, same with Kano giving Sub-Zero his scar in this timeline. Kotal treats Johnny with deference in the comic, but in the intro dialogues he either doesn't know him, or thinks he's annoying. Minor stuff, of course, given that intro dialogues aren't canon to begin with... but it shows plain as day that the comic was written entirely after the game.

Kenshi also said Suchin was killed by Red Dragon assassins during the story mode, so that points further at that bit in his ending being non-canon.

Oh, and given that Jacqui's ending shows Kotal with a bunch of other Osh-Tekk-looking guys who are covered in blue, it's definitely more than plausible that his entire tribe painted themselves blue.

Man, all these continuity holes....Sure would be nice to get an MK Encyclopedia to really get these things concrete.

Just throwing it out there because it does relate to the MK comics, as I'm asking Kittelsen about writing them. TBH, I think the writing is better in the comics than in the game. Even with MKX, it is a little better than MK9's writing. The errors have to be fixed, and I think getting this bad boy done and signed and shared and made.

That being said, the latest issue and going forward, I'd like to see more of Ferra/Torr, because not only were they absent in the game, they were absent in the comics, too.

Pretty disappointing for me. I wanted to see Torr, Reptile & Erron fight some Shokan. Not some jobber grunts get sonned by an oni.

Guess we'll have to see in next week's issue, I hope.

I think I'm just going to ignore the comics for now. Doing so solves all of the inconsistencies, at least the big ones.

I have seen the flashback scene in chapter 6 again and it's actually ambiguous enough to say that a possible Outworld and Netherrealm war was going to happen but didn't.

It didn't happen because Earthrealm stopped Shinnok.

Which is funny because Kotal pretty much overthrew Mileena for no reason.

Not really, because a plot point was that Quan Chi had been underground for years. Why would there be a war looming between Outworld and the Netherrealm later on when Shinnok had already been defeated? What possible reason would there be for that to suddenly be a danger? The Netherrealm was not a threat at that point in time, and was treated like it had not been for a long time in the present day. That scene makes so much more sense if it takes place around the same time as the beginning of the game.

I forgot about the Erron thing. There was definitely a lack of communication on that one. He seemed so noble in the comics, refusing to allow Kano to hurt the girls and even trying to save their lives. And he's a complete prick in the game (albeit a lovable one)

Maybe Kotal imprisoning him made him even colder?

I think it's really not an inconsistency and just showing there's more than one side to characters. Erron's not going to kill some kids.

Also, I do think some of his dialogue does show him to have some sense of loyalty towards Kotal as his employer. ("But my employer, Kotal Kahn, is from Outworld. So now I'm Outworld.") There's also how pissed off he was at Rain.
